Practical tips

Getting the most from under-stairs storage starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. These are worth keeping in mind:

  • Plan decorating around the fitting
  • Consider the colour of the hall, the stairs and the skirting
  • Count the coats and pairs of shoes in daily use
  • Mention any parking rules on your street

A soft, damp cloth is the best way to keep the fronts clean. Dry them afterwards, and avoid abrasive pads and strong solvents. The edges of drawers and the areas around handles pick up marks first.

Wet coats and shoes can mark paint and leave damp in a closed cupboard. It’s best to let them dry before closing the door on them, and air the cupboard if it feels damp.

Under-stairs storage for homes in Nine Elms

We make each under-stairs cupboard in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, which suits drawer boxes that carry weight, while MDF takes paint well for the doors and fronts. Once painted, by spray or by hand, it’s brought to your home in Nine Elms and fitted. We make under-stairs cupboards from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and the things people most often want solved are cleaning things with no proper home and a meter or fuse board buried behind clutter.

Many homes around Nine Elms have been built since 2000, and newer homes rarely come with much storage. Fitted storage can turn a hallway recess, a landing or the space under the stairs into somewhere useful. Plasterboard stud walls are common, so fixings go into the studs or use fixings made for the board.

The written quote is your record of the job. It describes the under-stairs cupboard we have designed for the room, its materials and its finish, and it’s what the workshop builds to.

Questions we are often asked

My home in Nine Elms is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

At the design visit, we measure the way in not just the room. Under-stairs cupboards are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Does a conservation area in or near Nine Elms affect fitted furniture?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

It can be done with some care: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. We don’t treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

We need someone to let us in. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.

Do pictures help?

Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit, along with rough measurements. Show anything the furniture has to work around, like radiators or sockets.

What affects the price of under-stairs storage?

Every job is priced for its room: the size, what goes inside, the finish and how square the room is all count. You will get a quote in writing once we have measured up.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

With ready-made units, the choice of colour is the maker’s. Bespoke storage can be painted in the colour you choose, by spray or by hand, so it can sit with the walls, the banisters or the skirting. In a compact new-build room, standard sizes rarely fit the walls exactly, and fitted furniture uses that space. It works around service boxing too.

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. We’ll talk through what you need inside at the design visit, and the quote follows.

How it’s made

Moisture-resistant MDF

MDF can be cut and shaped cleanly, which suits the angled panels under a staircase. The moisture-resistant grade we use is stable and paints well. It is the main material for the parts you see.

Spray-painted finish

Spray painting suits flat, panelled and angled fronts alike. We do it in our workshop, where the finish can be kept even. The colour is your choice.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it’s easy to buy.

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

How fitting works for under-stairs storage

You’re welcome to ask questions while we work. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the space and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Fitting day starts by covering floors and setting out the sections. Each piece is levelled and fixed to suit plasterboard or block. Hand-painted finishes can be completed once the furniture is in.

  1. You get in touch with some details and, if you like, a sketch. It helps to say whether the meters are under there.
  2. We visit to measure and talk about how you will use the space.
  3. Your quote sets out the design, the materials and the finish. Take your time to look through it.
  4. Your storage is made in our workshop, cut to the angle of your stairs. The materials are moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home and leave it ready to use, with the finish sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site.

Before fitting day

  • Tell us about parking near your home
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
