Under-stairs storage in Vauxhall, Lambeth

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. We make under-stairs storage for homes in Vauxhall, each designed at a visit to your home.

  • Struggling to reach the gas or electricity meter
  • A low corner too deep to reach into
  • Space under the stairs that is hard to use

Under-stairs storage in Vauxhall

Honest limits

We make and fit furniture, and we do not do electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering or structural work. There are a few other points to bear in mind:

  • Relocating meters, which your energy supplier deals with
  • Painting the hallway walls and ceiling
  • Reshaping or rebuilding the staircase

About our under-stairs storage in Vauxhall

Every staircase has its own shape. The underside slopes, the side of the stairs runs at its own angle and the floor below is rarely perfectly level. We scribe the storage to the stairs and the walls, so it looks as though it has always been there. That’s something a standard unit can’t do, in Vauxhall or anywhere else. If you are living with a fuse board that’s hard to get to and a low corner too deep to reach into, that’s what under-stairs cupboards are for, made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

Many homes around Vauxhall were built since 2000, and across London a lot of homes from those years are flats with compact layouts. Where a boiler or cylinder sits in a cupboard, the design keeps the clearances its maker sets out. Shallow cupboards suit narrow halls.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. The finish is stated too, whether that’s spray painting or hand painting.

The problems under-stairs storage solve

A hallway full of shoes and coats is a common reason to get in touch. A coat and shoe section under the stairs keeps the floor clear and the door easy to open, and everyone knows where things go.

Here are some of the needs we are asked about most:

  • A vacuum cleaner that has nowhere to go
  • Open space under the stairs that collects clutter
  • Struggling to reach the gas or electricity meter
  • An under-stairs cupboard full of clutter

Benjamin Franklin House, about 1.2 miles north, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, the cupboard door under a period staircase can be kept or replaced to match the new storage.

What to check before you book

  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
  • A quote in writing that sets out the job
  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?

How to choose a carpenter in London

Caring for painted furniture

Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so treat it gently at first. After that, a few simple habits help:

  • Decide whether you’d like coats on hooks or on a rail
  • Tell us if the hall is being decorated
  • Think about handles and how the fronts will look from the hall
  • Clear the space before the design visit if you can

If the hallway is being decorated afterwards, ask your decorator to protect the fronts. Tape on fresh paint can pull it off, so keep it away from the doors and drawers. Should you have a question about the storage, fill in our short enquiry form and we will help.

Do not store things in front of the meter or fuse board. Readers and engineers need to reach them, and you may need to as well. With its own door, the meter stays in reach without much effort.

Is bespoke worth it?

Ready-made drawers come in set depths, and the space under a staircase is often deeper than any of them. Drawers made for the space can run the full depth, so nothing is lost at the back. Each one is sized for what it will hold, from shoes to the vacuum cleaner. Separate ready-made pieces can make an open-plan room feel unplanned, while fitted furniture can give the space structure.

Tricky rooms take more time: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. The quote allows for it.

Questions from Vauxhall

Is parking a problem for fitting in Vauxhall?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It’s useful to tell us about parking at the measuring visit.

I live in a flat in Vauxhall. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. Under-stairs cupboards are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Usually not. Inside a house, fitted furniture doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings may need listed building consent for works that affect their character.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

We need someone to let us in at the start of the day. It is good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

How do I get a quote?

Simply use our contact form. Rough measurements and a few photos help, and we will arrange a design visit.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Just mention it when you get in touch.

What happens on fitting day

You won’t need to do much on the day. Someone needs to let us in, and it helps to have the room cleared beforehand, as agreed during the design visit. After that, it is over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the space and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Before fixing into a stud wall, we check for pipes and cables, with heavier pieces tied into the studs. Any new sockets or plumbing are for your electrician or plumber, ideally before fitting day.

  1. You get in touch and describe the stairs and the hall.
  2. We visit to measure the space at several points along the slope, as stairs and walls are rarely square in older houses.
  3. We send a quote in writing for the storage.
  4. In our workshop we build every part from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, following the slope we measured.
  5. On fitting day the units are set level and scribed to follow the stairs and walls. The finish is sprayed in the workshop or painted by hand once it is in.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Keep pets in another room while we work
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area

Getting a quote

The design visit is where every quote starts. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. A quote in writing follows the visit for you to look over. To book one, tell us about the room on our contact form.
