How we make fitted wardrobes for SW4
Loft conversions, common in London terraces, often leave sloping ceilings. We can shape a wardrobe to follow the ceiling line, keeping long hanging where there’s height and drawers or shelves lower down. Space that’s hard to use otherwise becomes useful storage. We make fitted wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and people most often get in touch about storage boxes stacked under the bed and not enough hanging space.
Fitting day follows a set order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. The time the fitting takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote.
- You send us some details about the room and the storage you need.
- At the design visit, we measure up and plan the doors and the inside with you.
- Your quote follows, with the layout, materials and finish set out, so you can see what’s included.
- Each section is built in our workshop to the room’s measurements.
- The wardrobes are fitted in your home, set level and scribed to the walls and ceiling.
What affects the price in SW4
There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

Starting with a design visit
It helps to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space, particularly with rough sizes. To send them over, use our contact form, and we’ll arrange a design visit.

Fitted wardrobes across SW4: local notes
In SW4, a spare room often doubles as a study or a guest room. Fitted wardrobes can be planned so the room switches between them.
The biggest shares of homes in the SW4 postcode district were built before 1919 (about 46%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 18%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. More than a third of the homes in the SW4 postcode district (about 46%) were built before 1919, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Bedrooms in houses of that age often have a chimney breast and alcoves, which suit wardrobes built to their widths. About 24% of households in SW4 live in flats in converted or shared houses, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. In a converted house, rooms can be odd shapes, with new partitions meeting old walls, and the route in may go through a shared hall and stairs. If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before anything is fixed to the walls.
Getting furniture into a London home takes planning, from narrow halls to lifts and parking, so the way in is measured along with the room.
Clapham: The wider area includes historic houses such as Carlyle's House, about 1.9 miles north-west. For a period home anywhere nearby, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go. Close to Larkhall Park? Morning light matters, so tall pieces go where they will not shade the window.
Could you do it yourself?
Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.
If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.
What affects the price in SW4
What it costs comes down to the materials and the time involved. That depends on:
- The width and height of the space
- Parking and unloading on your street
- Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls
- The finish: spray painted or hand painted
There’s no price list, because each job is designed for a single room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a quote in writing. To arrange a design visit, fill in our short enquiry form.
Helping us understand the room
When you contact us, these help most:
- Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
- How you want to use the space
- Examples of the look you’re after
- Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
A quote begins with some details from you: which room it is, rough measurements and a couple of pictures if you can take them. To send them, send us a few details through our contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and go through the design, then send a written quote.
What prompts fitted wardrobes
Moving home often prompts it. Standalone wardrobes from a previous home may not fit the new bedroom. Built-in wardrobes are planned for the room you live in now.
Requests we hear often include:
- A bedroom that never feels tidy
- Not enough hanging space
- Storage boxes stacked under the bed
- A tight bedroom where doors get in the way
What it is made from
Hanging rails
A long rail needs a support in the middle. Rail lengths are planned so they stay straight.
Spray-painted finish
A spray-painted finish is applied in our workshop, which gives large doors a smooth, even surface. It suits a crisp, modern look as well as a classic panelled door.
When you need someone else
We’d rather be clear about where our work stops:
- Building work to create a loft room
- Curing damp, which needs the right specialist
- Decorating or plastering the room
Questions we’re often asked
Does someone need to be home during the fitting?
Someone needs to be there to let us in. You do not need to watch us work.
What materials do you use?
We build with moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job best. The materials are named in your written quote.
Can you add sockets inside the units?
No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician. We’ll design around them.
Where is the furniture made?
It’s made in our workshop, to the sizes taken at the design visit. Then we bring it to your home and fit it.
How is the price worked out?
Every job is priced for its room: size, internal fittings, the finish and how awkward the walls are all play a part. The written quote follows the design visit.
Do you make good the walls afterwards?
No. Plastering and decorating are not part of our work. The furniture itself is spray painted or hand painted.
Who chooses the colour?
The choice is yours, and it’s agreed with you before painting. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you’ve chosen.
