Under-stairs storage in Greengate, Newham

Under-stairs storage in Greengate: pull-out drawers, cupboards and coat storage under the stairs. We make each piece in our workshop and fit it in your home.

  • Cleaning things with no proper home
  • An old cupboard door that doesn’t suit the hall
  • Space under the stairs that is hard to use

Need under-stairs storage in Greengate?

When is bespoke worth it?

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, and standard units leave gaps.

Under-stairs storage for homes in Greengate

We make each under-stairs cupboard in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood suits drawer boxes and carcasses, as it’s strong and holds screws firmly, while MDF takes paint well for the doors and fronts. Once painted, by spray or by hand, it is brought to your home in Greengate and fitted. If your home has a sloping corner nobody can reach and no room for a small desk or a place to work, under-stairs cupboards made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.

With a large share of homes around Greengate built before 1919, under-stairs cupboards in older terraces often house the meters or the fuse board. Those have to stay reachable, so any storage is designed around them. Bays and sash windows in period houses are natural spots for a window seat.

Once you have read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made at our workshop. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so every detail can be checked first.

What under-stairs storage cannot fix

We are carpenters, so some jobs belong to other trades. It helps to know these before you plan the job:

  • Electrical work under the stairs, which your electrician carries out
  • Painting the hallway walls and ceiling
  • Structural changes to the staircase itself

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can message us from the contact page and we will give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

What it is made from

  • Spray-painted finish
  • Coat hooks and shoe shelves
  • Birch plywood
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Pull-out drawers
  • Hand-painted finish

Why bespoke in Greengate?

Standard drawer units are made in fixed sizes that rarely match the depth under the stairs. Bespoke drawers are made to the depth you have, so the back of the space is used too. Each one is sized for what it will hold, from shoes to the vacuum cleaner. Alcoves and recesses in period houses are rarely a standard width or depth, so off-the-shelf pieces either don’t fit or leave a gap either side. Made for the space, the furniture uses the full width and height.

How it is painted is part of the price: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

Why choose us

  • Designed for the room you have
  • Built in our workshop and fitted in your home

Fitted storage in Greengate

About 56% of the homes in the area around Greengate went up before 1919, and about 15% between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. There are 12 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Greengate. Being near listed buildings doesn’t make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. About 39% of households in the streets around Greengate live in terraced houses, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. In a terraced house, the space under the stairs often holds the meters or the fuse board, and they must stay accessible.

If you live in a flat close to West Ham station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. If you live in a period home close to St Andrew's Church, the space under the stairs may hold the meters or the fuse board, and the cupboards are planned around them. If your children go to Southern Road Primary School or a school nearby, under-stairs cupboards can give school bags, shoes and sports kit a proper home.

Flats, conversions and lettings

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it.

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them at the measuring visit.

From workshop to your room

The last stage of the day is the finish. With a spray finish from the workshop, there’s typically only filling and touching up to do in the room; hand painting, if that is what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. Terraced streets in London are often lined with parked cars, so it helps to tell us at the design visit what’s outside. The van is unloaded quickly, with the sections carried straight in. Saturday fitting can be arranged.

  1. First we hear what’s under your stairs now and what you need, like coats, shoes or the vacuum cleaner.
  2. We measure the space, the slope and the floor, and note any meters or fuse boards.
  3. We talk through drawers, cupboards and coat storage, and send a written quote, with the finish set out.
  4. The storage is made in our workshop and painted in your colour. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home and check every drawer and door with you.

How to prepare

  • Tell us about parking near your home
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings

Common questions about under-stairs storage

Can you fit under-stairs storage to the uneven walls of an older house in Greengate?

Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.

I live near West Ham station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Newham and the rest of London. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with some details about the room.

How long is the fitting for under-stairs storage?

The time the fitting takes depends on how much storage you want under the stairs, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. We make every part in our workshop, so the time at your home is spent fitting. If you’d like the fitting on a Saturday, that can be arranged.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Normally not. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. If the building is listed, works affecting its character can require listed building consent, so ask the council’s conservation officer.

What does an under-stairs cupboard cost?

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Drawers usually involve more work than plain shelving, and the finish makes a difference too. We set it all out in a written quote.

Which materials go into your under-stairs cupboards?

We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. MDF is stable and takes paint well, so it suits the doors and fronts, while birch plywood gives strength to the drawers and carcasses. Everything is finished by spray painting or hand painting.
