Under-stairs storage in East Dulwich: what you get
Deep pull-out drawers bring the back of the space within reach. Instead of crawling in to find something, you slide the drawer out and everything is in view. At the tall end, a cupboard works well for coats, an ironing board or the vacuum. Many designs for homes in East Dulwich combine the two. If you’re living with a staircase with untidy space beneath it and a low corner too deep to reach into, under-stairs cupboards made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish can solve it.
With a large share of homes around East Dulwich built before 1919, the space under the stairs in a terraced house often holds the gas meter, the electricity meter or the fuse board. Meter readers and engineers need to get to them, so the design keeps them accessible. Bays and sash windows in period houses are natural spots for a window seat.
The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. The finish is stated too, whether that is spray painting or hand painting.

From workshop to your room
Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it is going into, and that happens on fitting day. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size of the space and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Where a period house has been split into flats, the way in often goes through shared parts, so neighbours may appreciate a note before fitting day. Each section is sized for the tightest door or turn. Saturdays can be arranged.
- You get in touch and let us know what’s under the stairs now, including any gas meter, electricity meter or fuse board.
- We visit to measure the slope and the floor, and agree a design that keeps any meter or fuse board accessible.
- You receive a written quote for the storage.
- The storage is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with access to the meters planned in.
- We fit it in your home, scribed to the stairs and the walls, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
How to prepare
- Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to
- Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
- Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
Ask for a quote
Every quote follows a design visit. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, and the written quote comes after. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. To book a design visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Fitted storage in East Dulwich

It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Within a mile of the centre of East Dulwich, 9 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. About 64% of homes in the streets around East Dulwich were built before 1919, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Under the stairs in an older terrace is often where the meters or the fuse board are, so the design keeps them accessible.
If your home is one of the older houses near The Latter Rain Outpouring Revival Church, pull-out drawers can reach right to the back of a deep under-stairs space. Kingswood House, about 2.2 miles south, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, pull-out drawers can reach right to the back of a deep under-stairs space.

Practical tips
New paint needs time to cure fully, so treat it gently at first. After that, a few simple habits help:
- Think about what you will keep in each drawer
- Mention any decorating plans so the work can be timed well
- Bring paint colours you like to the design visit
- Make room so the whole space can be measured
If the hallway is being decorated afterwards, ask your decorator to protect the fronts. Masking tape can lift fresh paint, so it shouldn’t go on the new finish. Should you have a question about the storage, tell us about the room on our contact form and we’ll help.
Don’t store things in front of the meter or fuse board. You may need to reach them yourself in a hurry, so leave the path open. A dedicated door makes this easy to keep up.
Is it time for under-stairs storage?
After a hallway is redecorated, an old, tired cupboard under the stairs can stand out. New storage, painted in a colour chosen for the hall, can tie it together. If decorating is planned, it’s worth mentioning during the design visit so the work can be timed sensibly.
Most of the enquiries we get are about needs like these:
- No room for a small desk or a place to work
- Open space under the stairs that collects clutter
- Nowhere to put coats, shoes and bags
- A tired under-stairs cupboard that stands out
Near listed buildings like Champion Lodge, under half a mile north-west of the centre of East Dulwich, older homes may keep original joinery that under-stairs cupboards can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.
Questions to ask before you hire anyone
- Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
- Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
- Can you see real work of theirs?
- Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
Questions we are often asked
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in East Dulwich?
It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to let us know about parking during the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.
My home in East Dulwich is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?
We measure the route in not just the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Under-stairs cupboards are made at our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It is useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.
Do you do the electrics?
No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.
How do I get a quote?
It’s easiest to drop us a line using the contact form with a few details about the room. We then arrange a design visit, measure up and send a written quote.
Can you come on a Saturday?
Yes, by prior arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you contact us.
How many days does the fitting take?
How long fitting takes depends on the size of the space and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. It is something we discuss at the design visit.
Flats, blocks and rented homes
If the property is let, we will need access agreed with the tenants. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.
We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, as it makes good use of an awkward room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
