Under-stairs storage in Peckham, Southwark

Under-stairs storage in Peckham: pull-out drawers, cupboards and coat storage under the stairs. Each piece is designed at a visit to your home, built in our workshop and fitted by us.

  • The low end of the space going to waste
  • Storage that doesn’t match the hallway
  • A hallway crowded with coats and shoes

Under-stairs storage in Peckham

Is it time for under-stairs storage?

Many people struggle with the shallow, sloping end under the bottom steps. You cannot stand up in it, and you cannot reach the back without kneeling. Pull-out drawers solve that by bringing the back of the space to you.

If you recognise any of these, it’s worth talking to us:

  • A sloping corner nobody can reach
  • No room for a small desk or a place to work
  • Cleaning things with no proper home
  • A dark, wasted space under the stairs

Living in a block of flats near Queens Road Peckham station? Then each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.

What to check before you book

  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
  • Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

Under-stairs storage for homes in Peckham

Every staircase has its own shape. The soffit slopes, the stringer sets its own line, and floors are often a little out of level. We scribe the storage to the stairs and the walls, so it looks as though it has always been there. That is something a standard unit cannot do, in Peckham or anywhere else. We make under-stairs cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the things people most often want solved are a vacuum cleaner that has nowhere to go and wanting a quiet corner for paperwork.

Where housing is mixed, as in much of London, no two homes have quite the same walls and floors. Under-stairs cupboards are scribed and levelled on site, so they look straight even where the room is not. You choose the paint colour, and whether it is spray-painted or hand-painted.

After the design visit, we send you a written quote. It sets out the design we have talked through, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you’re getting.

What under-stairs storage can’t fix

We are carpenters, so some jobs belong to other trades. It is useful to know these before you plan the job:

  • Moving a gas or electricity meter, which is arranged through your energy supplier
  • Any work on gas pipes or appliances
  • New sockets, lights or wiring, which are for your electrician

Not sure whether your space suits under-stairs storage? You can send us a few details through our contact form and we will tell you before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

How fitting day works

Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it’s going into, and that happens on fitting day. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, until the line is tight. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the shape of the space and the number of drawers and doors, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. On fitting day, each piece is fitted to the room’s own walls, scribed where walls bow and levelled where floors slope. Spray-painted pieces arrive finished; hand-painted ones can be finished on site.

  1. You get in touch and tell us a little about the space under your stairs, and whether the meters or fuse board are in there.
  2. We visit to measure the space and discuss the design with you.
  3. You receive a quote in writing for the storage we have discussed, for you to read through.
  4. Your storage is built in our workshop and painted to the colour you chose.
  5. We fit it in your home, scribed to the stairs and the walls.

Before we arrive

  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Empty the space we will be working in

Getting a quote

To get a quote, get in touch through our contact form and tell us a little about the room and roughly what you’d like. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and send you a written quote afterwards.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Off-the-shelf units are made for flat walls and square corners, and the space under a staircase is neither. A ready-made unit tends to leave gaps at the slope and wasted space at the back. Storage made for the space follows the angle of the stairs and uses its full depth. It is a bigger investment than a flat-pack unit, and the return is in the space it uses. Recesses, sloping ceilings and tricky corners are where ready-made furniture struggles most, and most homes have one somewhere. Built-in pieces are made to fit them.

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. We’ll talk through what you need inside at the measuring visit.

Making use of tricky spaces in Peckham

About 39% of the homes in the streets around Peckham went up before 1919, and about 21% since 2000, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how under-stairs cupboards are fixed and fitted. The Rye Lane Peckham Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of Peckham. Planning controls in conservation areas are mainly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitting furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need permission. Your council can advise if you are unsure. Purpose-built flats are home to about 51% of households in the neighbourhood around Peckham, according to Census 2021. In a block, each section is sized to get up the stairs or into the lift and through the door. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Southwark Adult Education Institute, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent. If your home is one of the older houses near All Saints Church, under-stairs cupboards are scribed to walls and stair strings that are rarely straight.

What it’s made from

Birch plywood

Its layered build gives birch plywood its strength. It goes into the carcasses, the shelves and the drawer boxes, and its edge can be left visible or painted to match.

Spray-painted finish

For a crisp, even look, many people choose a spray-painted finish. We apply it in our workshop, so treat it gently while it cures fully.

Common questions about under-stairs storage

Can you make under-stairs storage for a home in Peckham?

Yes. Peckham is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Southwark and London. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with a few details.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Peckham?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the design visit.

Is it possible to fit storage around a meter under the stairs?

Yes. We plan the storage so the meter or fuse board stays easy to reach, normally behind its own door. Access matters for readings and safety checks, so we design around it.

Do you do the electrics?

No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician. We’ll design around them.

Is it possible to match the colour of my hallway?

Yes. The storage is spray-painted or hand-painted in a colour agreed with you. You can match it to the walls, the banisters or the skirting, so it looks like part of the house.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, by prior arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you contact us.
