Under-stairs storage in Bermondsey

About our under-stairs storage in Bermondsey

Deep pull-out drawers bring the back of the space within reach. Rather than reaching into the dark, you pull the drawer towards you and see what’s inside. Cupboards suit the taller end, where coats can hang and a vacuum cleaner can stand. Many designs for homes in Bermondsey combine the two. If you are living with nowhere to keep the vacuum and ironing board and no room for a small desk or a place to work, under-stairs cupboards made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand can solve it.

Most households around Bermondsey live in purpose-built flats, so storage has to be found in the hallway, the recesses and any bay. Each piece is built in sections sized for the route into the flat. Boilers and fuse boards in a hall cupboard keep the access and ventilation they need.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. The finish is stated too, whether that’s spray painting or hand painting.

Before and after fitting day

None of this takes much effort. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Tell us if the hall is being decorated
  • Note the things that need a home under the stairs
  • Find out what sits in the space now, from meters to pipes
  • Make room so the whole space can be measured

Decorating around the storage is for your decorator, and it’s best to protect the new paintwork while they work. Masking tape can lift fresh paint, so it shouldn’t go on the new finish. Should you have a question about the storage, message us from the contact page and we’ll help.

Sharp tools and heavy boxes can chip a painted edge. Store tools in a box or bag, not loose against the doors. Minor chips can be touched up with the matching colour.

Is bespoke worth it?

Ready-made units are designed for shipping and quick assembly. Ours is designed for one staircase and made at our workshop to suit it, with birch plywood drawer boxes that hold screws well and carry weight. Which suits you depends on how much you want from the space. In a flat, every bit of floor counts, and standalone furniture uses more of it than it needs. Fitted furniture can go to the ceiling and fill a recess exactly.

Access to the room makes a difference too. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying. Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit.

Questions we’re often asked

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to London Bridge station?

Yes, homes across Southwark and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can use our contact form with a few details about the room.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, by arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you contact us.

How much does under-stairs storage cost?

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. The size of the space, the number of drawers and doors, and the finish all shape the price. To get a quote, send us a few details through our contact form and we will arrange a design visit.

Is it possible to have a desk built under the stairs?

Often, yes, where the space opens onto a room and there is enough height at one end. A built-in desk with shelves above and drawers below can work well. Any socket or light there is for your electrician, and we plan around it.

Which materials go into your under-stairs cupboards?

Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish. Drawer boxes are birch plywood, as it is strong and holds screws firmly. The materials and finish are agreed in your quote.

What we don’t do

Before you plan the job, it helps to know what we do not do:

  • Plastering and decorating around the new storage
  • Reshaping or rebuilding the staircase
  • Relocating meters, which your energy supplier deals with

If in doubt, you can drop us a line using the contact form and describe the room. Our process from visit to fitting.

Bermondsey homes and under-stairs storage

About 33% of the homes in the streets around Bermondsey went up since 2000, and about 23% between 1973 and 1999, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. There are 110 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Bermondsey. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. All of London, Southwark included, is inside the ULEZ. That includes the vans that bring and fit furniture in Bermondsey. How the van gets to your door is planned at the design visit.

Near listed buildings like Roman Catholic Church of The Most Holy Trinity, under half a mile north-east of the centre of Bermondsey, older homes may keep original joinery that under-stairs cupboards can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. If your home is one of the older houses near St Mary Magdalen Bermondsey, the triangle under an old staircase is often deeper than it looks.

From workshop to your room

In older rooms, the furniture usually has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site, so it sits neatly against the room. The time the fitting takes depends on how much storage you want under the stairs, and your quote sets out the fitting days. In a block of flats, the stairs, landings, lift and doors matter as much as the room: the furniture is made in sections that fit through all of them. Some older blocks have small lifts or none.

  1. It starts when you contact us with some details about the space, and whether the meters or fuse board are in there.
  2. At the design visit we measure under the stairs and plan the drawers and doors with you.
  3. A written quote follows, with the design, finish and fitting days set out, for you to read through.
  4. We make every part in our workshop, shaped to the angle of your stairs.
  5. The storage is fitted in your home and checked, drawer by drawer.

How to prepare

  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall

Starting with a design visit

To get a quote, message us from the contact page and tell us which room you have in mind and what you want the furniture to do. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and a quote in writing follows.

Related advice

Do you need under-stairs storage in Bermondsey?

Most people get in touch because the space has become a dumping ground. Under the stairs is easy to fill and hard to sort, with things pushed to the back and lost in the dark. Well-planned drawers and shelves give each thing a home, and you no longer need to empty the cupboard to reach one thing.

Typical reasons people contact us include:

  • Open space under the stairs that collects clutter
  • Nowhere to keep the vacuum and ironing board
  • Nowhere to put coats, shoes and bags
  • An old cupboard door that does not suit the hall

The wider area includes historic houses such as Mansion House, about 1.3 miles north-west. If your own home is a period one, the triangle under an old staircase is often deeper than it looks.

  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
