Under-stairs storage in Camberwell

Deep pull-out drawers bring the back of the space within reach. Instead of crawling in to find something, you slide the drawer out and everything is in view. Cupboards suit the taller end, where coats can hang and a vacuum cleaner can stand. Many designs for homes in Camberwell combine the two. If you’re living with needing a compact spot for a laptop and a hallway crowded with coats and shoes, under-stairs cupboards made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed can solve it.

Around Camberwell, most households live in purpose-built flats, and many blocks have rules on lift booking, deliveries and working hours. Checking with the managing agent early makes the day smoother. If the flat is leasehold, the lease may need checking before under-stairs cupboards are fixed to the walls.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

What happens on fitting day

In older rooms, the furniture normally has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details, so it looks as though it was always there. The time the fitting takes depends on the shape of the space and the number of drawers and doors, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Drilling can be heard through the walls and floors of a block, and many buildings limit noisy work to certain hours. Fitting day is planned around any rules your building has. Saturdays can be arranged if your building allows work then.

  1. You contact us about the space under your stairs.
  2. We visit to measure the space at several points along the slope, as stairs and walls are rarely square in older houses.
  3. We send a quote in writing for the storage.
  4. The drawers, doors and carcasses are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, cut to the angle of the stairs.
  5. We fit the storage in your home, trimming the edges so they meet the stairs neatly. The finish is sprayed in the workshop or painted by hand once it is in.

Before fitting day

  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Keep pets in another room while we work
  • Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area

How to get a quote

Getting a quote starts with a few details: which room it is, rough measurements and a couple of pictures if you can take them. To send them, use our contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and discuss the design, then send a quote in writing.

Doors and drawer fronts

What you see of the storage is mostly the doors and drawer fronts. They can be plain or panelled, with handles chosen to suit the hall. Each one follows the line of the stairs above.

Plinths and scribe strips

The floor under a staircase is rarely perfectly level. We set the storage level on a plinth or adjustable feet, so the doors and drawers run true.

Flats, leases and landlords

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them at the design visit, and we’ll plan the fitting around them.

In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so each section is sized to get through without a struggle.

How we price under-stairs storage

What it costs comes down to the materials and the time involved. That depends on:

  • The number of doors and drawers
  • How big the furniture is
  • The internal fittings
  • Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors

No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

Helping us understand the room

These details help when you contact us:

  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. The design is talked through at the visit, once we have measured, and the written quote then sets it out. To start, fill in our short enquiry form.

Your questions about under-stairs storage in Camberwell

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Denmark Hill station?

Yes, homes across Southwark and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Does a conservation area in or near Camberwell affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

What materials do you use for under-stairs storage?

We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. The doors and fronts are MDF, which is stable and paints well, while birch plywood gives strength to the drawers and carcasses. Everything is finished by spray painting or hand painting.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

We need someone to let us in. It’s good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

What if my walls and floors are out of level?

That’s normal in older homes, and it is what scribing is for. Edges are scribed to the wall, and adjustable feet or a plinth bring the furniture up to level.

How much does under-stairs storage cost?

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. The size of the space, the number of drawers and doors, and the finish all shape the price. To get a quote, fill in our short enquiry form and we will arrange a design visit.

When you need someone else

It’s useful to know what’s outside our work before you plan:

  • Any work on gas pipes or appliances
  • Making good the walls and ceiling, which is for a plasterer or decorator
  • Electrical work under the stairs, which your electrician carries out

Not sure whether your space suits under-stairs storage? You can send us a few details through our contact form and we will tell you before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

Under-stairs storage in Camberwell: local notes

Homes built before 1919 make up about 29% of the housing in the area around Camberwell, with about 26% built since 2000, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Camberwell include Church of St Giles (Grade II*), less than half a mile south-east, and Camberwell Public Baths (Grade II), less than half a mile west. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for instance removing original joinery or fixing into it, may need listed building consent from the council. It is worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. A quarter or more of the homes in the streets around Camberwell (about 26%) were built since 2000, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Newer homes often have little built-in storage, and their walls are normally plasterboard on studs, so under-stairs cupboards are designed with fixings to suit.

Living in a block of flats near Denmark Hill station? Then each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. The wider area includes historic houses like Mansion House, about 2.7 miles north. If your own home is a period one, the space under the stairs may hold the meters or the fuse board, and the cupboards are planned around them. For families living near Mary Datchelor School, deep drawers suit the bulky things families collect, from scooters to swimming kit.
