Loft storage in East Dulwich

How it is made

Moisture-resistant MDF

MDF cuts cleanly, which suits the angled panels under a sloping ceiling. The grade we use is moisture-resistant and paints well. It makes up most of the visible parts.

Birch plywood

Birch plywood is made in layers, which makes it strong and stable. We use it for carcasses, shelves and drawer boxes, and its edge can be left visible or painted.

Loft storage in East Dulwich

Behind an eaves door, there’s often insulation and a need for ventilation. We design the storage so it does not block airflow or crush insulation. If you have concerns about what’s behind the eaves, ask the people who did the conversion. We look at this at the measuring visit in East Dulwich. If you are living with clothes with nowhere to go in a loft bedroom and a loft room that doubles as an office or guest room, eaves cupboards made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand can solve it.

A solid brick outside wall in an older house can be cold and sometimes damp, so a gap and ventilation behind fitted storage help avoid condensation. A large share of the homes around East Dulwich date from then. Damp should be sorted before anything is fitted against the wall.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. The finish is stated too, whether that’s spray painting or hand painting.

Tips worth knowing

Getting the most from loft storage starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. Here are some things worth bearing in mind:

  • Mention any parking rules on your street
  • Clear the knee-wall spaces before the design visit if you can
  • Choose a calm colour for the loft
  • Plan where the tall end of a wardrobe can go

A soft, damp cloth is the best way to keep the storage clean. Dry them afterwards, and avoid abrasive pads and strong solvents. Handles and drawer edges pick up marks first.

Check now and then that handles and hinges are tight. A loose screw is easy to tighten before it works loose. If a door drops or a drawer catches, fill in our short enquiry form and tell us.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.

The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot normally do that in an older room.

The problems loft storage solve

A new loft conversion often needs storage to finish it. The room is there, but the furniture to fit it isn’t. Storage made for the slopes completes it.

Typical reasons people contact us include:

  • Standard furniture that won’t go up the loft stairs
  • Unused space in a dormer
  • Boxes and suitcases with no home
  • Needing storage in a loft office

The wider area includes historic houses such as Kingswood House, about 2.2 miles south. For a period home anywhere nearby, the knee walls of a converted loft can take drawers as well as cupboards.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Whether the finish is set out in the quote
  • How they’ll get the furniture into the room
  • Can you see real work of theirs?
  • How they handle walls that are not straight

What happens on fitting day

If anything comes up on the day, just ask. Most of the decisions were made at the design visit and set out in your quote, so the day itself is about careful fitting. The time the fitting takes depends on how much storage you want in the loft, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. On fitting day, edges are trimmed on site to follow the walls, so a clear area to work in near the room helps. We keep dust down and tidy as we go. Where the finish is hand-painted, it can be done after the pieces are in.

  1. You tell us about your converted or boarded loft, including the eaves and any dormer.
  2. We measure the eaves, the slopes and the stairs up to the loft.
  3. The design is agreed and a quote in writing follows, with the finish set out.
  4. Every part is made in our workshop, ready for a spray-painted or hand-painted finish. It’s made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The storage is fitted, scribed to the slopes and checked with you.

Preparing the room

  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall

Arranging a design visit

The design visit is where every quote starts. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. Afterwards, we send a written quote, so you can take your time with it. To book one, fill in our short enquiry form.

Common questions about loft storage

Is parking a problem for fitting in East Dulwich?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It is useful to let us know about parking at the measuring visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Do you make loft storage for homes in East Dulwich?

Yes. We cover all of Southwark and the rest of London, and East Dulwich is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.

What do eaves cupboards cost?

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. The mix of cupboards, drawers and wardrobes, and the finish, all play a part. Everything is set out in a written quote after the visit.

Can a wardrobe follow a sloping ceiling?

Yes. The wardrobe follows the angle of the ceiling, with hanging where there is height. It makes the most of the space. We plan it at the design visit.

How long will the loft storage fitting take?

How long the fitting takes depends on the length of the eaves and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Because everything is built in our workshop, the work in your home is the fitting itself. We keep the route up to the loft as clear as possible.

What are your eaves cupboards made from?

The storage is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. The carcasses and drawer boxes are birch plywood, which is strong and holds screws well, while the doors and panels are MDF, which paints well. Everything is finished by spray painting or hand painting.

Making use of awkward spaces in East Dulwich

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around East Dulwich were built before 1919 (about 64%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 12%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. The centre of East Dulwich is within about a quarter of a mile of the Camberwell Grove Conservation Area. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If you’re unsure, check with the council before work starts. Red routes, run by TfL, have strict rules on stopping and loading. If your street in East Dulwich joins a main road, it’s worth telling us at the design visit. Then we can work out where to load and unload.

If you live near Brunswick Park, eaves cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things. Near listed buildings like Champion Lodge, less than half a mile north-west of the centre of East Dulwich, older homes may keep original joinery that eaves cupboards can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent.
