Our under-stairs storage across Southwark

Pull-out drawers make the most of the low, deep end of the space. Instead of crawling in to find something, you slide the drawer out and everything is in view. Cupboards suit the taller end, where coats can hang and a vacuum cleaner can stand. A mix of drawers and cupboards is often the best use of the space. We make under-stairs cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are a meter or fuse board buried behind clutter and space under the stairs that’s hard to use.

However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and fitting day is where that happens. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it. How long the fitting itself takes depends on how much storage you want under the stairs, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote.

  1. You get in touch with a few details and, if you like, a sketch. It’s useful to say whether the meters are under there.
  2. We visit to measure and talk about how you’ll use the space, and check where the meters and fuse board sit.
  3. Your quote sets out the design, the materials and the finish. Take your time to look through it.
  4. Your storage is made in our workshop, cut to the angle of your stairs.
  5. We fit it in your home and leave it ready to use, with the finish sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site.

How our quotes work

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

Under-stairs storage for homes across Southwark

Under the stairs, in the eaves, along a narrow hall or in a bay: homes across Southwark have lots of spaces that standard furniture can’t use. Each design is made to the space itself.

Homes built since 2000 make up about 28% of the housing in Southwark, with about 26% built before 1919, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. A quarter or more of the homes in Southwark (about 28%) were built since 2000, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Newer homes often have little built-in storage, and their walls are normally plasterboard on studs, so under-stairs cupboards are designed with fixings to suit. About 64% of households in Southwark live in purpose-built flats, according to Census 2021. For a flat, under-stairs cupboards are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day.

We make fitted furniture for every kind of home in Southwark, from Victorian terraces to new-build flats. The process is the same wherever you are: a design visit, a quote in writing, then making and fitting.

East Dulwich: If you live in a period home close to The Latter Rain Outpouring Revival Church, under-stairs cupboards are scribed to walls and stair strings that are rarely straight. For families living near Dog Kennel Hill School, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up.

Bespoke under-stairs storage or ready-made?

Off-the-shelf storage comes in the colours the maker offers. Bespoke storage can be painted in the colour you choose, by spray or by hand, so it can match the hall, the stairs or the woodwork.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Are the boards named, like MDF or plywood?
  • Will the doors close with even gaps?
  • Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
  • How they deal with uneven walls and floors

Flats, conversions and lettings

If the property is let, we will need access agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf.

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of, which we check during the design visit.

Materials and finishes

Moisture-resistant MDF

Because it cuts cleanly, MDF is ideal for the angled panels that follow the stairs. We use a moisture-resistant grade, which stays stable and takes paint well. Most of what you see on the finished storage is MDF.

Birch plywood

Its layered build gives birch plywood its strength. It goes into the carcasses, the shelves and the drawer boxes, and its edge can be left visible or painted to match.

What we do not do

Damp treatment and building work are for other specialists, so these points are worth knowing:

  • Any work on gas pipes or appliances
  • Changing where a meter sits, which isn’t carpentry
  • New sockets, lights or wiring, which are for your electrician

Looking after your furniture

Looking after painted furniture is simple. These habits help most:

  • Think about handles and how the fronts will look from the hall
  • Check whether your meters or fuse board are under the stairs
  • Tell us about parking during the design visit
  • Plan decorating around the fitting

If the hallway is being decorated afterwards, ask your decorator to protect the fronts. Tape on fresh paint can pull it off, so keep it away from the doors and drawers. Should you have a question about the storage, use our contact form and we’ll help.

Sharp tools and heavy boxes can chip a painted edge. Store tools in a box or bag, not loose against the doors. A small chip on a hand-painted finish is easy to touch in.

Common questions about under-stairs storage

Can you build storage around a gas meter or fuse board?

Yes. It’s common to find a meter or fuse board under the stairs, and access has to be kept. At the design visit we measure around them and leave a clear way in. Moving a meter isn’t our work, so we design for where it is now.

Do you work outside London?

No. We cover London only: all 32 boroughs and the City of London.

What if my walls and floors are out of level?

Uneven walls are normal in older London homes, and the furniture is made to deal with them. We scribe the edges to follow the wall and set the furniture level on adjustable feet or a plinth.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

It can be done with some care: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. We do not treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.

Is it possible to match the colour of my hallway?

Yes. We paint the storage in the colour you choose, by spray or by hand. You can match it to the walls, the banisters or the skirting, so it sits quietly in the hall.

Is the furniture made to order?

We make it in our workshop, to the sizes taken at the design visit. After that, we fit it in your home.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Let us know when you first get in touch, and we’ll see what we can do.
