FAQs: under-stairs storage in Edgware Bury
Can you make under-stairs storage for a home in Edgware Bury?
Yes. Edgware Bury is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Barnet and London. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with a few details.
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Edgware Bury?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It is useful to let us know about parking at the design visit.
How much does under-stairs storage cost?
Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. The size of the space, the number of drawers and doors, and the finish all shape the price. To get a quote, tell us about the room on our contact form and we will arrange a design visit.
Is it possible to have a desk built under the stairs?
Often, yes, where the space opens onto a room and there is enough height at one end. We can build a desk with shelves and drawers to suit the space. Any socket or light there is for your electrician, and we plan around it.
What happens at the measuring visit?
We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, and the written quote comes afterwards.
Do photos help?
Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit. Show anything the furniture has to work around, like radiators or sockets.
Under-stairs storage in Edgware Bury: what you get
Pull-out drawers make the most of the low, deep end of the space. Rather than reaching into the dark, you pull the drawer towards you and see what’s inside. Cupboards suit the taller end, where coats can hang and a vacuum cleaner can stand. A mix of drawers and cupboards is often the best use of the space. People typically come to us about cleaning things with no proper home and a meter or fuse board buried behind clutter; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.
Around Edgware Bury, with interwar houses or semis making up much of the housing, the hall is often wide enough for coat and shoe storage. Bay windows suit seating with drawers or lift-up lids, with a grille so any radiator below keeps heating the room. Each space is measured and under-stairs cupboards are made to suit it.
The furniture is made at our workshop after you have had the quote and decided to go ahead. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so you can check every detail beforehand.

How fitting day works
However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and that happens on fitting day. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, closing the gaps a standard unit would leave. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the shape of the space and the number of drawers and doors, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Semis and detached houses often have a front path or a side gate, which can make carrying in easier. We measure the path, any steps and the front door as part of the route. Floors, stairs and doorways are protected on the way in, and the sections are assembled in place.
- You tell us about the stairs and what you’d like to store.
- We measure the space, the slope and the floor, and note any meters or fuse boards, because they must stay accessible.
- We talk through drawers, cupboards and coat storage, and send a quote in writing, with the finish set out.
- The storage is made in our workshop and painted in your colour. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- The storage is fitted, scribed to the stairs and checked with you. The way to any meters is left clear.
Preparing the room
- Keep pets in another room while we work
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
- Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
Starting with a design visit
The design visit is where every quote starts. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and go through the design with you. A quote in writing follows the visit, so you can take your time with it. To arrange the visit, get in touch through our contact form.
Advice
When you need someone else
It helps to know what’s outside our work before you plan:
- Electrical work under the stairs, which your electrician carries out
- Changing where a meter sits, which is not carpentry
- Making good the walls and ceiling, which is for a plasterer or decorator
If in doubt, you can send us a few details through our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.
What it is made from
- Spray-painted finish
- Pull-out drawers
- Birch plywood
- Moisture-resistant MDF
- Coat hooks and shoe shelves
- Hand-painted finish
Edgware Bury homes and under-stairs storage
In the streets around Edgware Bury, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 47%) and the years since 2000 (about 34%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Newer homes are more common around Edgware Bury than across Barnet: about 34% date from 2000 onwards, against about 19%, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. That makes plasterboard stud walls and compact rooms more likely, which shapes the fixings and sizes. More than a third of the homes in the area around Edgware Bury (about 47%) date from between 1919 and 1939, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. In many interwar houses the space under the stairs holds the meters or the fuse board, so the design keeps them reachable.
If you live in a flat close to Elstree & Borehamwood station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. If your home is one of the older houses near St Andrew, under-stairs cupboards are scribed to walls and stair strings that are rarely straight. If you live near Edgwarebury Park, living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and under-stairs cupboards can give those things a place.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?
Standard drawer units are made in fixed sizes that rarely match the depth under the stairs. Drawers made for the space can run the full depth, so nothing is lost at the back. We size each drawer for what it will carry. Even in a 1930s house, walls and floors are not perfectly true, so standalone furniture can still lean or leave gaps. Built-in pieces are adjusted to the room on site.
Access to the room makes a difference too. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, and that’s part of the price. The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose.
Why choose us
- Fitted tight to walls that aren’t straight
- Saturday visits and fitting by arrangement
- A spray or hand-painted finish
- Made in moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood
Read bespoke vs off-the-shelf or what to look for in a quote.
Could you do it yourself?
Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it is easy to buy.
Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.
Flats, conversions and leaseholders
If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations, which is worth sorting early. We cannot advise on your lease.
If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways not just the room, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through.
