Edgware Bury homes and fitted home offices
In the area around Edgware Bury, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 47%) and the years since 2000 (about 34%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Around a third of the homes in the neighbourhood around Edgware Bury (about 34%) were built since 2000, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. In homes built since 2000, the spare room is often small and has to do two jobs. About 61% of households in the area around Edgware Bury live in detached or semi-detached houses, based on Census 2021. In a semi or detached house, a driveway, where there is one, can make unloading easier.
If you live in a period home close to St Andrew, lath-and-plaster walls need the right fixings for shelves above a desk. For families living near Broadfields Primary School, a desk with shelves and closed storage can serve both work and homework. If you live near Edgwarebury Park, a desk placed to make the most of daylight makes a big difference to a working day.

How we make fitted home offices for Edgware Bury
Cables are easy to forget and hard to hide later. Cable holes and routes are built into the desk and cupboards. Any new sockets are fitted by your electrician, with the furniture designed to suit. Talking it through during the design visit in Edgware Bury saves trouble later. If you are living with wanting to close the door on work at the end of the day and paperwork and files with nowhere to go, home offices made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish can solve it.
Around Edgware Bury, interwar houses or semi-detached and detached homes make up a good part of the housing. If yours is a 1920s or 1930s house, the box room over the stairs is a classic home office, with a bulkhead in the floor that the desk can be built around. Shelving, a desk and closed storage can all fit a room like that.
The quote comes in writing, so there’s time to read it properly and share it with anyone else involved. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

What we don’t do
Not everything around fitted home offices is carpentry, from an electrician to a plumber or a Gas Safe registered engineer. Here is what to bear in mind:
- Plastering and decorating around the office
- Structural work, such as removing walls or chimney breasts
- Setting up computers, screens or networks

What it is made from
- Birch plywood
- Built-in desks
- Spray-painted finish
- Moisture-resistant MDF
- Hand-painted finish
- Filing drawers
- Cable routes
Boards, parts and paint
Pull-out drawers
A set of drawers can sit under one end of the desk. The middle stays open for your knees and chair. We plan it at the measuring visit.
Shelves
Shelves in a home office carry books, files and folders. Span, depth and load all matter. We size each shelf to carry its load without sagging.
Flats, conversions and leaseholders
If the property is let, we will need access agreed with the tenants. An agent can arrange access for you, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.
Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations. We can’t give advice on leases.
How fitting day works
When we arrive on fitting day, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. The sections made in our workshop come in next. How long the fitting takes depends on the layout and how many pieces make up the office, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. It helps to clear the room and the route before we arrive. On the day, we cover the floors first, then bring the sections in. The pieces are levelled, fitted to the walls and fixed back.
- You tell us how you work and where you’d like the office.
- At the design visit, the room is measured and the layout planned. Cable routes are planned at this point.
- The design is agreed and a quote in writing follows, with the finish set out.
- Every part is built in our workshop, ready for a spray-painted or hand-painted finish. The materials are moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit it in your home and check every drawer and door with you.
How to prepare
- Make sure pets are kept safely away
- Empty the space we will be working in
- Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand

Your questions about fitted home offices in Edgware Bury
Do you cover homes near Elstree & Borehamwood station?
Yes. We cover all of Barnet and the rest of London. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit.
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Edgware Bury?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.
How much does a fitted home office cost?
Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. The size of the room, the amount of desk, shelving and storage, and the finish all shape the price. To get a quote, drop us a line using the contact form and we’ll arrange a design visit.
What if the stairs or lift are small?
We plan the route in at the design visit. The stairs, landings, any lift and the doorways are measured, and each section is made to a size that will get through.
Do I need permission to fit furniture in a leasehold flat?
Possibly. It depends on your lease, and some require the building owner’s consent for alterations. Your lease is something we cannot advise on, so check it or ask your managing agent.
What happens at the measuring visit?
We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. We’ll also ask about access and parking, and a written quote follows.
When is bespoke worth it?
What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot typically do that in an older room.
Cost matters, and it is fair to say so: off-the-shelf furniture usually costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is tricky, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.
