How we make loft storage for Edgware Bury

A loft room can hold a great deal of storage, if the low spaces are used well. We design and make eaves cupboards, drawers in the knee walls, wardrobes under the slopes and shelves in dormers, all made for the shape of the room. For a home in Edgware Bury, it starts with a design visit to measure and talk it through. Typical reasons to get in touch are space under the eaves going to waste and ready-made wardrobes too big for the stairs; the furniture is made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

An interwar house normally has a proper landing, sometimes with a recess or an airing cupboard, which can hold fitted storage for linen and spare bedding. Around Edgware Bury, where interwar homes and semis are a big part of the housing, it’s worth looking up as well as down. Any boiler or hot water cylinder keeps the access and ventilation its maker asks for.

If the job needs another trade, such as an electrician or a plumber, we will tell you, so it can be arranged before fitting day. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

The problems loft storage solve

Some people have a boarded loft and want proper shelving. Storage in a boarded loft keeps everything organised. It suits seasonal things and boxes.

We’re often asked to help with:

  • A boarded loft with no proper shelving
  • A sloping ceiling with no room for a wardrobe
  • An empty dormer that could hold shelves
  • Ready-made wardrobes too big for the stairs

Living in a block of flats near Elstree & Borehamwood station? Then the route in is measured not just the room, and the sections are sized to fit it.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • How they handle walls that aren’t straight
  • Real projects you can actually look at
  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
  • Whether the quote follows a visit to your home

Questions from Edgware Bury

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Elstree & Borehamwood station?

Yes. We cover all of Barnet and the rest of London. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Do you make loft storage for homes in Edgware Bury?

Yes. We cover all of Barnet and the rest of London, and Edgware Bury is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and go through the design, and then we send a quote.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture, which helps avoid condensation and mould. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

Can a wardrobe follow a sloping ceiling?

Yes. Bespoke wardrobes are made to the angle of the ceiling. The tall end takes hanging space, and the low end can hold shelves or drawers. It is scribed to the slope and walls.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two choices: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. The finish is agreed in your quote.

How long will the loft storage fitting take?

The time the fitting takes depends on the shape of the room and the number of cupboards and drawers, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Every part is made at our workshop before we arrive. If you’d like the fitting on a Saturday, that can be arranged.

Flats, leases and landlords

For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them at the design visit, so fitting day is planned around them.

How it’s made

Pull-out drawers

Drawers in the knee wall let you use the deep, low space without crawling in. Each one is sized for what it will hold. They suit clothes, bedding and boxes.

Moisture-resistant MDF

Because it cuts cleanly, MDF is ideal for angled panels under the slope. We use a moisture-resistant grade, which is stable and takes paint well. It makes up most of the visible parts.

From workshop to your room

Finishing comes last. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; hand painting, if that is what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. In a 1930s house with a converted loft, the stairs to the loft room are often steeper than the main flight, so any section going up there is sized for them. The main stairs in houses of that age are usually straighter. The pieces are joined and fixed once in place.

  1. First you let us know about the loft room and what you’d like to store there.
  2. At the design visit we measure the knee walls, slopes and stairs and plan the storage with you, including the headroom under the slope.
  3. A written quote follows, with the design, finish and fitting days set out, for you to look over.
  4. The cupboards and drawers are made at our workshop, in sections sized for the loft stairs. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We carry it up, fit it and leave it ready to use, with the finish sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site.

Before we arrive

  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone

Advice

Pricing loft storage in Edgware Bury

When we put a quote together, we consider:

  • How square the room is
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • Parking near your home

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. We’ll talk through what you need inside during the design visit.

Helping us understand the room

There’s no need for exact sizes or plans. Just send what you can:

  • Any ideas or images you have saved
  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner

A quote begins with a few details from you: which room it is, rough measurements and a couple of photos if you can take them. To send them, message us from the contact page. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and discuss the design, then send a quote in writing.
