Window seats in Elmers End, Croydon

Window seats in Elmers End: window seats for bays and under sash windows, with storage inside. Each piece is designed at a visit to your home, made in our workshop and fitted by us.

  • A recess under the window doing nothing
  • A room with shutters and sashes that deserves a proper seat
  • A bay window that’s hard to furnish

Flats, blocks and rented homes

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray or hand-painted finish.

Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Mention it when you get in touch.

How we make window seats for Elmers End

Window seats work in bedrooms and children’s rooms as well as living rooms. Drawers or a lift-up lid turn it into storage as well as seating. For children’s rooms, drawers are often easier for small hands than a heavy lid. In Elmers End, the design visit is where the details are settled. If your home has a radiator under the window getting in the way and looking for a reading spot by the window, that’s what window seats are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

In an area where interwar homes or semis make up much of the housing, as around Elmers End, loft conversions are common, and they leave low eaves and sloping ceilings. Fitted storage can make use of the eaves, the bay or the hall. We build storage in lofts that are already converted or boarded.

Where other trades are needed, for instance an electrician to move a socket, we point that out. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

Common questions about window seats

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Elmers End?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.

Can you make window seats for a home in Elmers End?

Yes, Elmers End is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Croydon and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Just mention it when you contact us, and we’ll see what we can do.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Not typically. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.

How is the furniture painted?

There are two options: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. Your quote sets out which you’ve chosen.

How long is the fitting for a window seat?

The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the window and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. The seat is made in our workshop first, so the time in your home is spent fitting. We work tidily and keep the room as clear as possible.

Could you do it yourself?

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

The real difference is in the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t usually do that in an older room.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Off-the-shelf benches are made for straight walls and square corners, but bays have angled sides and walls that are rarely flat. In a bay, a standard bench leaves tricky gaps. A bespoke seat follows the shape of the bay. It’s a bigger investment, and the gain is a seat that fits the space. Doors, windows and radiators rarely leave a gap that matches a standard width, so ready-made furniture often ends up in the wrong place. Fitted furniture is designed around them.

In London, parking can affect the price. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay. Let us know about parking at the design visit.

Before and after fitting day

Getting the most from window seats starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. These are worth keeping in mind:

  • Clear the bay or window area before the design visit
  • Think about what you’ll store under the seat
  • Bring paint colours you like to the design visit
  • Decide if the seat is part of a larger piece

When we’ve finished fitting, the seat and its storage are ready. New paintwork takes time to cure fully, so go easy on it to begin with. Avoid placing heavy objects on the painted surfaces while it hardens.

Lift lids gently and lower them carefully. It keeps the hinges and edges in good order. Avoid overloading drawers so they keep running smoothly.

Fitting day, step by step

On the morning of the fitting, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. Next, we carry in the sections made at our workshop, a piece at a time. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the window and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. It’s useful to clear the room and the route before we arrive. On the day, we cover the floors first, then bring the sections in. The pieces are levelled, fitted to the walls and fixed back.

  1. It starts when you contact us about a window seat. Say how you’d like to use it, if you know.
  2. We visit to measure and talk about how you will use the seat. Shutters and cills are noted too.
  3. Your quote sets out the design, the materials and the finish.
  4. We make the seat, the lids or drawers and any grille in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home and leave it ready to use, with the lids or drawers checked with you.

Before fitting day

  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway

Starting with a design visit

A quote begins with some details from you: which room it is, rough measurements and a couple of photos if you can take them. To send them, use our contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and discuss the design, then send a quote in writing.
