Fortis Green Under-Stairs Storage

Thinking about under-stairs storage in Fortis Green? It starts with a design visit to measure and talk through ideas, then a written quote, before anything is made.

  • Stairs open to a room, with clutter on show
  • Storage that doesn’t match the hallway
  • No room for a small desk or a place to work

Under-stairs storage in Fortis Green

Flat-pack or bespoke?

If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths.

Under-stairs storage in Fortis Green: what you get

Under-stairs storage is not only for houses. Maisonettes, split-level flats and homes with stairs down to a lower floor often have usable space beneath the steps. We measure the space and the route in, so the sections made in our workshop fit through the front door and along the hall. Wherever your home is in Fortis Green, the process is the same. If you are living with needing a compact spot for a laptop and a meter or fuse board buried behind clutter, that is what under-stairs cupboards are for, made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

In streets where many homes were built before 1919, as they were around Fortis Green, under-stairs cupboards in older terraces often house the meters or the fuse board. Those have to stay reachable, so any storage is designed around them. Bays and sash windows in period houses are natural spots for a window seat.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Common questions about under-stairs storage

Do you cover homes near Alexandra Palace station?

Yes. We cover all of Haringey and the rest of London. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit.

My home in Fortis Green is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.

Does fitted furniture need planning permission?

Not normally. Inside a house, fitted furniture does not normally need planning permission. If the building is listed, works affecting its character can need listed building consent.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

It can be done with some care: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. Damp treatment isn’t something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.

How is the furniture painted?

You can choose between two finishes: by spray or by hand. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

Someone needs to let us in. It’s good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

The problems under-stairs storage solve

In a smaller home, every bit of space counts. Turned into proper storage, it can hold the everyday things that would otherwise fill the hallway. It also takes pressure off the other cupboards in the house.

These come up often when people first get in touch:

  • A staircase with untidy space beneath it
  • Nowhere to put coats, shoes and bags
  • Wanting a quiet corner for paperwork
  • A vacuum cleaner that has nowhere to go

If your home is one of the older houses near United Reformed Church, the space under the stairs may hold the meters or the fuse board, and the cupboards are planned around them.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Are the boards named, like MDF or plywood?
  • Will they visit to measure before quoting?
  • Whether you’ll get a quote in writing, not just a figure
  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done

Storage in Fortis Green homes: local notes

Homes built before 1919 make up about 56% of the housing in the area around Fortis Green, with about 21% built between 1919 and 1939, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. The National Heritage List has 23 entries within half a mile of the centre of Fortis Green. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and under-stairs cupboards can be designed to work around them. Parking controls in London are set borough by borough, so Haringey has its own. If your road in Fortis Green falls in a zone, the van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Tell us what the parking is like at the design visit.

For families living near Fortismere School, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up. If you live in a flat close to Alexandra Palace station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.

How it’s made

Plinths and scribe strips

In older houses, walls and floors are seldom straight. Scribe strips and a plinth take up the difference. The result is neat, even lines all round.

Spray-painted finish

Spraying gives a smooth, even surface. We spray in the workshop, so the finish is complete before fitting. The colour is agreed with you.

How fitting day works

At the end, we tidy up and take up the floor coverings. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you and explain how to look after the paint. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the space and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. On fitting day, edges are trimmed on site to follow the walls, so a clear area to work in near the room helps. Dust is kept down and cleared up as we go. Hand painting, if that is your finish, can follow the fitting.

  1. You get in touch with a few details and, if you like, a sketch. It helps to say whether the meters are under there.
  2. At the design visit, we look at the stairs, the hall and what you need to store.
  3. A written quote follows, with the fitting days agreed. Take your time to look through it.
  4. Your storage is built in our workshop, cut to the angle of your stairs.
  5. The storage is fitted and set level, ready for the first coats and shoes, with the finish sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site.

Before fitting day

  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician in advance
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away

Ask for a quote

A quote begins with some details from you: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of pictures if you can take them. To send them, fill in our short enquiry form. We will then arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.

Advice

What we don’t do

We’d rather be clear about where our work stops:

  • Reshaping or rebuilding the staircase
  • Relocating meters, which your energy supplier deals with
  • New sockets, lights or wiring, which are for your electrician

If in doubt, you can tell us about the room on our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.
