TV and media units for your home in Fortis Green

TV and media units in Fortis Green

Where the TV will be wall-mounted, the unit is designed around where the bracket goes and the cable route behind it. If it stands on the unit, we size the top to suit, with the cables kept out of sight. If your home has a TV that looks out of place in the room and clutter around the TV, that’s what TV and media units are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

With a large share of homes around Fortis Green built before 1919, plenty of living rooms are two reception rooms knocked into one, each with its own chimney breast. One pair of alcoves might take shelves and the other cupboards, a TV or a desk. Some internal walls in houses of that age are lath and plaster, so fixings are chosen to suit what’s behind the paint, and long shelves are sized so they don’t sag under books.

Everything we agree during the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it’s easier before the furniture is made.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Tell us about it when you contact us.

If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so tell us about it at the design visit.

Where other trades come in

Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work are not part of what we do. There are a few other points to bear in mind:

  • Installing aerials, satellite dishes or broadband
  • Configuring the TV and sound system
  • Taking out a fireplace or chimney breast

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can use our contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer. Our process from visit to fitting.

What affects the price in Fortis Green

When we put a quote together, we consider:

  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • How square the room is
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • The overall size of the piece

Every room is priced on its own, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. You’ll see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

Helping us understand the room

Some details help us understand the job before we visit. When you contact us, it helps to send:

  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any

Rough sizes are fine at the start. We measure everything properly at the design visit, along with the walls, floor and ceiling. To get started, message us from the contact page and let us know about the room. The written quote follows the visit.

Questions from Fortis Green

Does a conservation area in or near Fortis Green affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Fortis Green?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, so we can plan the day around it.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps, which helps avoid condensation and mould. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

Do you do plastering or decorating?

No. Plastering and decorating are not part of our work. The furniture itself is spray painted or hand painted.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

It is a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, then send a quote in writing.

Do TV units need ventilation?

Ventilation is designed in wherever equipment sits, using open backs, gaps or vented doors. Each box should have its own space, and it is worth checking the maker’s guidance on clearances.

What happens on fitting day

However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and fitting day is where that happens. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the length of the TV wall and what it needs to hold, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. If your hall still has its original tiles or boards, they’re covered before any carrying starts. Fixings into older walls are made carefully, as lath and plaster can crack if treated roughly. Any decorating around the new pieces is for your decorator.

  1. You get in touch about a built-in TV unit, and where the sockets are now.
  2. We visit to measure, note the sockets and agree where everything will go. Any new sockets are a job for your electrician.
  3. You receive a quote setting out the layout and the paint finish, for you to look over.
  4. We build the unit in our workshop, with routes and ventilation planned in, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home, scribed to the walls and ready for your equipment. A hand-painted finish is done on site, if you chose one.

Before fitting day

  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day

How to get a quote

It helps to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space. To share them, get in touch through our contact form, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Cost matters, and it’s fair to say so: flat-pack is normally cheaper to buy. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is awkward, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t usually do that in an older room.
