Under-stairs storage in Noel Park: what you get

Under the stairs is where so much ends up, from coats and shoes to the vacuum cleaner. We design under-stairs storage around the things you actually want to keep there, whether that is pull-out drawers, a run of cupboards or a mix of both. For a home in Noel Park, it starts with a design visit to measure the space and talk it through. Most enquiries start with space under the stairs that’s hard to use and an old cupboard door that doesn’t suit the hall; the furniture is made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

Where original shutters, doors or panelling survive, they’re worth designing around. Around Noel Park, where homes from before 1919 make up a large share, fitted storage can be designed to sit alongside them. Door styles can be chosen to suit the age of the house. If your home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original joinery.

A written quote is the clearest record of what we have agreed. It sets out the under-stairs cupboard designed for your room, what it’s made from and how it’s finished, and it is what the workshop builds to.

Do you need under-stairs storage in Noel Park?

The most common reason is clutter. Under the stairs is easy to fill and hard to sort, with things pushed to the back and lost in the dark. Well-planned drawers and shelves give each thing a home, and you no longer need to empty the cupboard to reach one thing.

Some of the things we’re asked to solve are these:

  • Cleaning things with no proper home
  • No room for a small desk or a place to work
  • An old cupboard door that doesn’t suit the hall
  • An under-stairs cupboard full of clutter

For a family home near Noel Park Primary School, deep drawers suit the bulky things families collect, from scooters to swimming kit.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Whether you’ll get a written quote, not just a figure
  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
  • How they deal with uneven walls and floors
  • Where they’ll park and unload

Our checklist for choosing a carpenter

What it’s made from

Doors and drawer fronts

We make the fronts from moisture-resistant MDF and finish them in the colour you choose. Their edges are cut to follow the angle of the stairs, so the gaps stay even all the way along.

Plinths and scribe strips

We trim scribe strips to the exact line of the wall. They help the storage look as though it was always there. The plinth at the bottom does the same job at the floor.

From workshop to your room

When we arrive on fitting day, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. The sections made at our workshop come in next, a piece at a time. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the space and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Older London houses often have narrow hallways and tight turns on the stairs, so the furniture comes in sections sized for the route in. Floors, stairs and doorways are covered before anything is carried through, and the sections are joined and scribed in the room.

  1. To begin, message us from the contact page; a brief note on the space and what it holds now is plenty.
  2. We visit to measure the slope and the floor, and agree a design that keeps any meter or fuse board accessible.
  3. A written quote follows, setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. The storage is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with access to the meters planned in.
  5. The storage is fitted and set level, and the meter access is checked with you.

Preparing the room

  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are

Noel Park homes and under-stairs storage

The biggest shares of homes in the area around Noel Park were built before 1919 (about 59%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 14%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Part of Noel Park is in the Noel Park Conservation Area, according to Historic England’s records. Conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If you are unsure, check with the council before work starts. About 23% of households in the streets around Noel Park live in flats in converted or shared houses, the 2021 Census shows. In a converted house, rooms can be odd shapes, with new partitions meeting old walls, and the route in may go through a shared hall and stairs. A lease can require consent for alterations, so it is worth checking yours first.

Bruce Castle, about 1.2 miles east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, pull-out drawers can reach right to the back of a deep under-stairs space. For a flat near Alexandra Palace station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

If you only need a hook or two and a basic shelf, an off-the-shelf option may be enough. Bespoke storage makes sense when you want every part of the space working, not just the easy part. We’re happy to talk through which suits you at the design visit. Tall standalone furniture needs fixing back to the wall so it can’t tip, and older walls of brick or lath and plaster make that harder than it looks. With fitted pieces, the fixings are planned for the wall from the start.

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. We’ll talk through what you need inside at the design visit, and the quote follows.

What you get with us

  • Finished by spray or by hand
  • Fitted tight to walls that are not straight
  • Every quote follows a design visit
  • Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations. We cannot give advice on leases.

For flats on red routes or busy main roads, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so it is worth raising at the measuring visit.

Common questions about under-stairs storage

I live near Alexandra Palace station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Haringey and the rest of London. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Noel Park?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the measuring visit, so the day can be planned around it.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps to avoid condensation. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

Which materials go into your under-stairs cupboards?

Our storage is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then painted. Drawer boxes are birch plywood, as it is strong and holds screws firmly. Your quote confirms the materials and finish.

Are drawers or cupboards better under the stairs?

Often a mix works best. Drawers make the most of the low, deep end of the space, while a cupboard at the tall end takes coats, the vacuum or an ironing board. We will suggest a layout when we visit.

Is it possible to fit storage around a meter under the stairs?

Yes. We plan the storage so the meter or fuse board stays easy to reach, normally behind its own door. Meter readers and engineers need access, so we never box them in.
