Made for the room, or bought in a box?
Standalone TV units cost less and arrive quickly. It is also easy to replace a stand when your equipment changes, which is a fair point in its favour. A built-in unit is planned for your room and your equipment. Newer homes often have compact rooms where standard furniture leaves tricky gaps, while fitted furniture is made to the room. It can also be planned around boxed-in pipes and risers.
The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. We’ll talk through what you need inside during the design visit, and the quote follows.
What you get with us

About our TV and media units in Hackney Wick
The screen size comes first. We plan the space around the TV you have, or the one you expect to buy, with a margin so it is not a tight squeeze. The height of the screen matters as well: it should suit where you sit, not just the wall. If you are living with set-top boxes stacked on a stand and alcoves either side of the chimney breast going to waste, that is what TV and media units are for, made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
A large share of the homes around Hackney Wick date from 2000 onwards, and newer homes rarely come with any built-in shelving or media storage. We plan TV and media units around the existing sockets and aerial points, with routes for cables designed in. Walls in newer homes are often plasterboard on studs, which is fine for fitted furniture when the fixings are right.
After the design visit, we send you a quote in writing. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish.

What affects the cost of TV and media units
What it costs comes down to the materials and the time involved. The main factors are:
- Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
- What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
- Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
- Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. You will see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.
Before the design visit
To give us a picture of the room, it’s useful to include:
- The type of home and how the room is reached
- Any ideas or images you have saved
- Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
- What the furniture needs to hold
If you know what you want, say so; if you do not, that is fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To start, drop us a line using the contact form.
Questions we are often asked
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Hackney Wick?
It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to let us know about parking during the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.
Do you make TV and media units for homes in Hackney Wick?
Yes. We cover all of Tower Hamlets and the rest of London, and Hackney Wick is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.
How do I get a quote?
The first step is to send us a few details through our contact form. We then arrange a design visit, measure up and send a quote in writing.
How long will the fitting take?
It depends on the length of the TV wall and what it needs to hold, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. The making happens in our workshop, so the time in your home is mostly fitting and finishing.
Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?
It is something we deal with all the time. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base.
Do I get to choose the colour?
You do. We agree the colour with you, and it’s set out in the quote.
TV and media units for homes in Hackney Wick
Homes built since 2000 make up about 65% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Hackney Wick, with about 15% built between 1973 and 1999, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. The National Heritage List records 11 entries within half a mile of the centre of Hackney Wick. You can check whether a particular building is listed on Historic England’s list. Newer homes are more common around Hackney Wick than across Tower Hamlets: about 65% date from 2000 onwards, against about 45%, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. That makes plasterboard stud walls and compact rooms more likely, which shapes the fixings and sizes.
The wider area includes historic houses like Sutton House, about 1.3 miles west. For a period home anywhere nearby, walls that bow and floors that slope are why TV and media units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. Living in a block of flats near Hackney Wick station? Then check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.

What happens on fitting day
You are welcome to ask questions while we work. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so the day itself is about careful fitting. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. In a newer development, the lift, the concierge and set working hours may all need checking, so it is useful to sort them out ahead of time. The furniture is built in sections that fit the lift and doorways.

Ask for a quote
Getting a quote starts with a few details: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of pictures if you can take them. When you’re ready, fill in our short enquiry form. We’ll then arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.
Advice
Flat-pack or bespoke?
Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.
A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.

What prompts TV and media units in Hackney Wick
Open-plan living is another reason. Built-in furniture makes that wall look planned.
We’re often asked to help with:
- Bought furniture that does not suit the room
- A screen at the wrong height
- Set-top boxes stacked on a stand
- Speakers muffled behind doors
For families living near Mossbourne Riverside Academy, low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room.

- Whether you’ll get a written quote, not just a figure
- Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
- Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
- How doors and drawers are fitted
