Your questions about under-stairs storage in East Village
Do you make under-stairs storage for homes in East Village?
Yes, we work across Newham, East Village included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can use our contact form with a few details.
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in East Village?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.
Does someone need to be home during the fitting?
We need access, so someone has to let us in. You don’t need to watch us work, but it’s useful to be around at the end.
What happens during the design visit?
We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and discuss the design with you. We’ll also ask about access and parking, and a written quote follows.
Can you fit a small desk under the stairs?
Often, yes, where the space opens onto a room and there’s enough height at one end. A built-in desk with shelves above and drawers below can work well. New sockets or lights are for your electrician, and we leave a route for the cables.
How long is the fitting for under-stairs storage?
The time the fitting takes depends on the shape of the space and the number of drawers and doors, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Drawers, doors and carcasses are all made in the workshop before we arrive. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.
How we make under-stairs storage for East Village
Every staircase has its own shape. The soffit slopes, the stringer sets its own line, and floors are often a little out of level. We scribe the storage to the stairs and the walls, so it looks as though it has always been there. It is the part of the job a boxed unit simply can’t manage. Most enquiries start with a low corner too deep to reach into and an under-stairs cupboard full of clutter; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.
Newer homes tend to have finished floors that scratch easily, so we cover them while we work. Many homes around East Village were built since 2000, and their plasterboard walls need fixings into the studs or made for the board. The storage can sit on its own plinth or be scribed over the skirting.
Where other trades are needed, for example an electrician to move a socket, we point that out, so it can be arranged before fitting day. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

Fitted storage in East Village
About 68% of the homes in the neighbourhood around East Village went up since 2000, and about 12% before 1919, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Within a mile of the centre of East Village, 5 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. The Ultra Low Emission Zone has covered all of London since it reached the outer boroughs on 29 August 2023. It applies to the vans that deliver and fit furniture in East Village, as it does anywhere else in London. We plan parking and access with you at the measuring visit.
For a flat near Stratford International station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in. If your children go to Chobham Academy or a school nearby, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up.

Nearby you will also find V&A East (close by, under half a mile south-west) and Westfield Stratford City (close by, under half a mile south). For a walk, there is Old Ford Island.
Bespoke under-stairs storage or ready-made?
A standard unit knows nothing about your meter or fuse board. Fitted in front of one, it can make access awkward for readings and safety checks. Bespoke storage is planned around them from the start. In a newer flat, big flat-pack units can be hard to get into the lift or through the door, whereas fitted furniture is made in sections that fit. It’s then assembled and fixed in the room.
There’s no price list, because every piece is designed for one room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a written quote, naming the materials and finish. To arrange a design visit, use our contact form.
Why choose Bespoke Carpentry in East Village
- Work across the whole of London
- Saturdays by prior arrangement
- Workshop-made and fitted by us
- Finished by spray or by hand
Take a look at how bespoke compares with ready-made and how to compare quotes.
What happens on fitting day
The last stage of the day is the finish. With a spray finish from the workshop, there’s normally only filling and touching up to do in the room; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. Newer developments sometimes have their own parking and loading rules, so it helps to let us know during the design visit. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled and fixed. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

When you need someone else
Before you plan the job, it helps to know what we don’t do:
- Electrical work under the stairs, which your electrician carries out
- Painting the hallway walls and ceiling
- Reshaping or rebuilding the staircase
Not sure whether your space suits under-stairs storage? You can use our contact form and we will tell you. How it works.
Materials and parts
- Pull-out drawers
- Birch plywood
- Hand-painted finish
- Coat hooks and shoe shelves
- Spray-painted finish
- Moisture-resistant MDF
The problems under-stairs storage solve
Many people struggle with the shallow, sloping end under the bottom steps. You cannot stand up in it, and you cannot reach the back without kneeling. Pull-out drawers solve that by bringing the back of the space to you.
If you recognise any of these, it’s worth talking to us:
- A vacuum cleaner that has nowhere to go
- Open space under the stairs that collects clutter
- A dark, wasted space under the stairs
- A tired under-stairs cupboard that stands out
If you live near Mabley Green, living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and under-stairs cupboards can give those things a place.
What to check before you book
- How doors and drawers are fitted
- Whether they measure the room themselves
- Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
- Can you see real work of theirs?
Tips worth knowing
Most of what helps is simple. What we’d suggest:
- Think about how your household uses coats and shoes
- Look for meters, a fuse board or pipes before we visit
- Think about handles and how the fronts will look from the hall
- Tell us about anything bulky that needs to fit
Heavy items are best kept in the lower drawers. That keeps the drawers running smoothly and the load where the carcass is strongest. Shelves are made for the things you told us about during the design visit, so stick to that and they’ll stay straight.
Do not store things in front of the meter or fuse board. Readers and engineers need to reach them, and you may need to as well. With its own door, the meter stays in reach without much effort.
