Loft storage for your home in Hackney Wick

Fitting day, step by step

Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details. How long fitting takes depends on the length of the eaves and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Fitting day starts by covering floors and setting out the sections. Each piece is levelled and fixed to suit plasterboard or block. Hand-painted finishes can be completed once the furniture is in.

  1. You get in touch with a few details about the loft room, whether it’s a converted room or a boarded space.
  2. We visit to measure and look at what’s behind the knee walls.
  3. A written quote follows, with the fitting days agreed.
  4. We make the cupboards and drawers in our workshop, cut to the slope, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The storage is fitted and set level, ready to fill.

How to prepare

  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings

How to get a quote

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you do not, that’s fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To start, send us a few details through our contact form.

How we make loft storage for Hackney Wick

Behind an eaves door, there’s often insulation and a need for ventilation. Storage shouldn’t block the ventilation or squash the insulation. If you have concerns about what’s behind the eaves, ask the people who did the conversion. We look at this at the design visit in Hackney Wick. If you are living with a new loft conversion that needs storage and nowhere to store bags and boxes, eaves cupboards made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed can solve it.

A large number of homes around Hackney Wick date from 2000 onwards, and in London many homes of that age are flats in newer developments. Boilers, cylinders and consumer units often sit in a hall cupboard, and any new storage keeps their access and ventilation. Shallow cupboards suit narrow halls, so the hallway still feels open.

The furniture is built in our workshop after you have had the quote and decided to go ahead. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so every detail can be checked first.

FAQs: loft storage in Hackney Wick

How do you fit loft storage in a flat in Hackney Wick?

We measure the route in as well as the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Eaves cupboards are made at our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.

Can you make loft storage for a home in Hackney Wick?

Yes. We cover all of Tower Hamlets and the rest of London, and Hackney Wick is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and go through the design, and then we send a quote.

Do you do the loft conversion too?

No, we build storage in lofts that are already converted or boarded. Loft conversions are building work, with Building Regulations to follow. When the room is finished, we can plan the storage.

Should I send pictures?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot, particularly with rough measurements. You can send them when you send us a few details through our contact form.

Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?

That is normal in older homes, and it is what scribing is for. We scribe the edges to follow the wall and set the furniture level on adjustable feet or a plinth.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture to avoid condensation. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

Flats, conversions and lettings

For flats on red routes or busy main roads, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so it is worth raising during the design visit.

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of, which we check at the measuring visit.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it’s easy to buy.

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.

Hackney Wick homes and loft storage

Homes built since 2000 make up about 65% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Hackney Wick, with about 15% built between 1973 and 1999, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. That matters for eaves cupboards, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Hackney Wick is partly covered by the Fish Island Conservation Area, according to Historic England’s records. Conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. On TfL’s red routes, the rules on stopping and loading are strict. If your home is on or just off a main road, it is useful to mention it. Then we can work out where to load and unload.

Living in a block of flats near Hackney Wick station? Then eaves cupboards are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. Sutton House, about 1.3 miles west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, the knee walls of a converted loft can take drawers as well as cupboards.

Is it time for loft storage?

A dormer can feel like wasted space. Shelves, a desk or a seat in the dormer make it useful. It uses space that’s otherwise empty.

If you recognise any of these, it’s worth talking to us:

  • A sloping ceiling with no room for a wardrobe
  • Wasted space behind the knee walls
  • Ready-made wardrobes too big for the stairs
  • An empty dormer that could hold shelves

For families living near Mossbourne Riverside Academy, eaves cupboards can give school bags, shoes and sports kit a proper home.

What to check before you book

  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
  • Is it spray painted or hand painted?
  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
  • Will the quote be in writing?

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

Looking after your furniture

Most of what helps is simple. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Let us know about parking near your home
  • Consider drawers for the deep, low spaces
  • Empty the eaves so we can see what’s behind
  • Note how narrow the loft stairs are

Don’t pack things so tightly that air cannot move behind the knee wall. The storage is planned to keep airflow, so leave that space open. It helps keep the loft in good order.

Keep the eaves ventilated and avoid pressing things against the back of the space. Squashed insulation works less well. Damp in the eaves is worth raising with the people who did the conversion.
