Under-stairs storage in Hither Green, Lewisham

Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. Our work on under-stairs storage in Hither Green starts with a design visit, and everything is built in our workshop.

  • A hallway crowded with coats and shoes
  • A vacuum cleaner that has nowhere to go
  • A fuse board that’s hard to get to

Under-stairs storage for your home in Hither Green

Under-stairs storage in Hither Green

Not every staircase is in a house. A maisonette, a split-level flat or a staircase down to a lower floor can all leave space underneath. We measure the space and the route in, so the sections made at our workshop fit through the front door and along the hall. Wherever your home is in Hither Green, the process is the same. We make under-stairs cupboards from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and the things people most often want solved are a low corner too deep to reach into and a meter or fuse board buried behind clutter.

Where original shutters, doors or panelling survive, they’re worth designing around. Around Hither Green, where homes from before 1919 make up a large share, fitted storage can be designed to sit alongside them. Panel details can be drawn to suit the house. If your home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original joinery.

A quote in writing is the clearest record of what we’ve agreed. It sets out the under-stairs cupboard designed for your room, what it’s made from and how it is finished, and it’s what the workshop builds to.

Under-stairs storage for homes in Hither Green

In the streets around Hither Green, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 50%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 18%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. 8 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of central Hither Green. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. The ULEZ, run by TfL, takes in all of London, so Lewisham is inside it. It applies to every van that comes to fit furniture in Hither Green. Access and parking are talked through during the design visit.

The wider area includes historic houses like Queen's House, about 2 miles north. If your own home is a period one, under-stairs cupboards are scribed to walls and stair strings that are rarely straight. If you live in a period home close to Church of St Swithun, pull-out drawers can reach right to the back of a deep under-stairs space.

Hither Green is part of the London Borough of Lewisham, about 2 miles north-west of New Cross. From period terraces to newer flats in Hither Green, we measure the room as it is and design around it. Is bespoke worth it?

A standard unit knows nothing about your meter or fuse board. Put in the wrong place, it can block the access meter readers and engineers need. Bespoke storage is planned around them from the start. Ready-made pieces are proportioned for newer homes and can look lost in an older one, whereas fitted pieces can pick up the room’s height and mouldings.

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, and the quote follows.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations, which is worth sorting early. We cannot give advice on leases, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them during the design visit.

What prompts under-stairs storage in Hither Green

Many people struggle with the shallow, sloping end under the bottom steps. You can’t stand up in it, and you can’t reach the back without kneeling. Pull-out drawers solve that by bringing the back of the space to you.

People usually get in touch with us about needs like these:

  • A vacuum cleaner that has nowhere to go
  • Wanting a quiet corner for paperwork
  • An old cupboard door that doesn’t suit the hall
  • Stairs open to a room, with clutter on show

If you live in a flat close to Hither Green station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.

How fitting day works

Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it’s going into, and that happens on fitting day. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, closing the gaps a standard unit would leave. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size of the space and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Hallways in period houses are often narrow, and the stairs turn sharply, so under-stairs cupboards are made in sections sized to get through. Floors and stair carpets are protected on the way in and out, and the sections are joined and scribed in the room.

  1. You get in touch and tell us what’s under the stairs now, including any gas meter, electricity meter or fuse board.
  2. At the design visit we measure the space and plan the storage around the meters, so readers and engineers can still reach them.
  3. A quote in writing follows, setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. We make it in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a door or panel left where the meters need access.
  5. We fit it in your home, scribed to the stairs and the walls, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Before we arrive

  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are

Starting with a design visit

Pull-out drawers

Pull-out drawers bring the deep, low end of the space within reach. Each one is sized for what it will hold. A set of drawers can step down to follow the line of the stairs.

Moisture-resistant MDF

Because it cuts cleanly, MDF is ideal for the angled panels that follow the stairs. We use a moisture-resistant grade, which stays stable and takes paint well. Most of what you see on the finished storage is MDF.

Questions from Hither Green

Do you cover homes near Hither Green station?

Yes, homes across Lewisham and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can use our contact form with some details about the room.

Can you make under-stairs storage for a home in Hither Green?

Yes. We cover all of Lewisham and the rest of London, and Hither Green is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, and then we send a quote.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.

What if my walls and floors are out of level?

It is something we deal with all the time. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base.

Can I send photos before the visit?

Yes, they help. Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space. You can send them when you use our contact form.

Can you build storage around a gas meter or fuse board?

Yes. We plan the storage so the meter or fuse board stays easy to reach, often with a door of its own. Meter readers and engineers need access, so we never box them in.
