Need bespoke kitchens in Hither Green?

Is bespoke worth it?

Ready-made ranges rarely include a larder or dresser that fits a particular alcove. Bespoke joinery can be made for the exact space, with the same finish as the cabinets. Ready-made tall pieces have to be fixed to the wall for safety, and older walls of brick or lath and plaster make that harder than it looks. With fitted pieces, the fixings are planned for the wall from the start.

In London, parking can affect the price. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension. It’s useful to talk about parking at the measuring visit, so we can plan for it.

Bespoke kitchens in Hither Green: what you get

Some kitchens suit a dresser, with cupboards below and open shelves above, and it suits many period homes. We make dressers to fit the wall they stand against, scribed to follow it and painted to suit the room. We make kitchens from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are spray-painted or hand-painted cabinets and making the most of a galley kitchen.

Sash windows and back doors to the garden are common in older kitchens. Around Hither Green, where a large share of homes date from before 1919, the layout is drawn around those fixed points. Your plumber connects the sink where the design puts it. The worktop, sink and appliances are your choice.

We write quotes in plain English, without jargon. You’ll see what will be made, the boards used and the finish.

How fitting works for bespoke kitchens

In older rooms, the furniture normally has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site. The time the fitting takes depends on how many units there are and how the room is laid out, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Hallways in period houses are often narrow, and the stairs turn sharply, so kitchens are made in sections sized to get through. Floors, stairs and doorways are covered before anything is carried through.

  1. We start with how you cook and what the kitchen needs to hold.
  2. At the design visit we measure the walls, floor and ceiling and plan the layout.
  3. A quote follows, covering the design and finish.
  4. We build and finish the kitchen in our workshop. The materials are moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. Fitting day: we fit the cabinets, and your plumber, electrician and an engineer on the Gas Safe Register handle the services.

Before fitting day

  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand

Ask for a quote

A quote begins with a few details from you: the room, rough measurements and some photos if you have them. When you are ready, get in touch through our contact form. We will then arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.

Kitchens in Hither Green: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Hither Green were built before 1919 (about 50%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 18%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. 8 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of central Hither Green. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Flats in converted or shared houses account for about 23% of households in the neighbourhood around Hither Green, according to Census 2021. Conversions often leave rooms in unusual shapes, with partition walls, boxed-in pipes and chimney breasts in odd places, and the way in often goes up shared stairs. If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before anything is fixed to the walls.

If you live in a flat close to Hither Green station, it helps to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day. For an older house near Church of St Swithun, a narrow back addition or an old chimney breast may shape the kitchen layout. If you live near Manor House Gardens, a cupboard by the back door for boots and coats can be built in with the kitchen.

Boards, parts and paint

Moisture-resistant MDF

MDF gives a smooth surface for painted doors, in a kitchen as anywhere.

Plinths and scribe strips

A plinth hides adjustable feet and lets the cabinets sit level. Scribe strips close the gap to a wall that isn’t straight.

Before and after fitting day

These points come up often when people plan bespoke kitchens. They help before and after fitting:

  • Make a note of what you use every day
  • Allow space to walk round an island
  • Mention any parking or lift rules
  • Talk to your other trades in good time

New paintwork takes a while to harden after fitting. Treat the doors and drawer fronts gently at first and avoid harsh cleaners. In time, mild soapy water and a soft cloth keep them clean.

Line up your other trades in good time. Their work and ours need to fit together, and it is easier when everyone works from the same design.

FAQs: bespoke kitchens in Hither Green

Can you fit bespoke kitchens to the uneven walls of an older house in Hither Green?

Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.

My home in Hither Green is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

At the design visit, we measure the way in not just the room. Kitchens are made at our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It’s useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

What happens when you come to measure?

It’s a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, and the written quote comes afterwards.

Can you build an island in my kitchen?

Where space allows, yes. There has to be comfortable space on every side, and we measure for it during the design visit. In a narrow kitchen, a longer run or a peninsula may suit better.

How is the furniture painted?

You can choose between two finishes: spray painted or hand painted. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.

Do I get to choose the colour?

The choice is yours, and we agree it with you before the furniture is finished. Whichever finish you pick, it’s in the colour you have chosen.

What we do not do

Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work aren’t part of what we do. There are a few other points to bear in mind:

  • Structural changes to the room
  • Gas work, which is for a Gas Safe engineer
  • Electrics, sockets and lighting (your electrician)

If in doubt, you can fill in our short enquiry form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.
