About fitted wardrobes in SE13

The inside matters as much as the doors. Long hanging, double hanging, shelves and drawers are arranged around what you own, so coats and dresses have room and shirts do not waste height. It’s worth noting the clothes you reach for most before the design visit. We make fitted wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are clothes piled on chairs and in spare rooms and too little room for clothes.

If anything comes up on the day, just ask. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so the day itself is about careful fitting. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and your quote sets out the fitting days.

  1. You get in touch with some details about the bedroom and where it is in the house.
  2. We visit to measure the room and discuss the design, and we measure the stairs, landings and doorways too. Let us know about parking as well, as a van typically needs a permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension in much of London.
  3. A quote in writing follows with the design, materials and finish.
  4. The wardrobes are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections sized for the route we measured.
  5. Fitting day: the sections come in, are joined and set level, and the doors are hung.

Fitted wardrobes for homes across SE13

SE13 has bedrooms of every shape, from bay-fronted rooms in older houses to tight rooms in modern flats. The design follows the room, not a catalogue.

In SE13, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 44%) and the years since 2000 (about 20%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. That matters for fitted wardrobes, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. More than a third of the homes in SE13 (about 44%) were built before 1919, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Older bedrooms usually have alcoves and tall ceilings, both of which fitted wardrobes can use. About 22% of households in SE13 live in flats in converted or shared houses, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. In a converted house, rooms can be odd shapes, with new partitions meeting old walls, and the route in may go through a shared hall and stairs. A lease can require consent for alterations, so it’s worth checking yours first.

We work across all 32 London boroughs and the City of London, and SE13 is part of that. Every job starts the same way, with a design visit to measure and discuss the design.

St Johns: Close to Brookmill Park? Keeping fitted wardrobes off the window wall keeps the room bright. For families living near Ashmead Primary School, the inside of fitted wardrobes can be laid out with adjustable shelves, so the space keeps up as children grow.

The problems fitted wardrobes solve

A spare room turning into a guest room or a child’s room is another reason. Fitted wardrobes give it proper storage while leaving space to move. Adjustable shelves let the inside change over time.

We’re often asked to help with:

  • Gaps above and around standalone wardrobes
  • Damp or musty clothes against an external wall
  • Clothes with nowhere proper to go
  • A bedroom that never feels tidy

Materials and finishes

Moisture-resistant MDF

MDF has no grain, so painted doors look smooth and even. The moisture-resistant grade is our choice for fitted work.

Plinths and scribe strips

The plinth lifts the wardrobe and hides an uneven floor. Its height can be set to match the skirting.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations, which is worth sorting early. We cannot give advice on leases.

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind, after measuring the route at the measuring visit.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it’s quick to buy.

If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.

Tips worth knowing

Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after with a little care. These habits help most:

  • Let us know which walls face outside
  • Work out the split between long and short hanging
  • Check how much space there is in front for doors to open
  • List the things that won’t hang, like jumpers and shoes

Painted wardrobe doors only need a soft cloth that is barely damp. Avoid abrasive pads and strong sprays, which can mark the finish.

Let doors close gently rather than slamming, and slide doors without forcing them. It keeps hinges and runners in adjustment longer.

Questions we are often asked

How do I get started?

It is easiest to fill in our short enquiry form. We then arrange a design visit, measure up and send a written quote.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

We need someone to let us in at the start of the day. It’s good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

How long are you in the house for fitting?

It depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. The wardrobes are made at our workshop first before we come to fit them.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Just mention it when you get in touch, and we’ll see what we can do.

Can you build wardrobes around a bed?

Yes. Wardrobes can sit either side of the bed with a bridge of cupboards above. It’s planned so there’s room around the bed and the room does not feel enclosed.

Hinged or sliding doors: which suits my bedroom?

Both work well, depending on the space. Hinged doors open a whole section at once but need room in front to swing, while sliding doors save space but only open part of the wardrobe at a time. We will help you weigh them up when we visit.

Who chooses the colour?

The choice is yours, and it is agreed with you before painting. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you have chosen.
