Fitting day, step by step

Every fitting follows the same order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. How long fitting takes depends on how much storage you want under the stairs, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. In houses converted into flats, the route in may include a shared hall and stairs, so neighbours may appreciate a note before fitting day. Each section is sized for the tightest door or turn. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

  1. It starts with a few details from you about the space.
  2. At the design visit we measure and plan how you will use the space.
  3. We send a quote in writing covering the design, materials and finish.
  4. We make the drawers and cupboards in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and run through each drawer and door with you.
  6. Treat the fresh paintwork gently while it cures; a hand-painted finish is easy to touch up later.

Before fitting day

  • Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through

Advice

How we make under-stairs storage for Ladywell

Not every staircase is in a house. A maisonette, a split-level flat or a staircase down to a lower floor can all leave space underneath. We measure the space and the route in, so the sections made in our workshop fit through the front door and along the hall. Wherever your home is in Ladywell, the process is the same. Most enquiries start with open space under the stairs that collects clutter and a low corner too deep to reach into, and the answer is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

A Victorian or Edwardian terrace usually has a long, narrow hall leading to the stairs. Around Ladywell, a large share of homes date from before 1919, so depth matters as much as width wherever storage goes. Shallow units keep the way through clear.

A quote in writing follows the design visit. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you are getting.

What it is made from

Hand-painted finish

A hand-painted finish can be applied once the storage is in place. It’s easy to touch up later. Like any new paint, it needs time to cure fully.

Plinths and scribe strips

The floor under a staircase is rarely perfectly level. A plinth or adjustable feet let us set the storage level, so the doors and drawers run true.

Is bespoke worth it?

A standard unit knows nothing about your meter or fuse board. Fitted in front of one, it can make access tricky for readings and safety checks. A design made for the space keeps them in clear reach from the start. The two recesses beside a chimney breast are seldom an identical size, and standard units bought as a pair rarely suit both. Each side can be made to its own size.

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size is the starting point. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

Is it time for under-stairs storage?

With more people working from home, some want a desk tucked under the stairs. Where the space is open to a room, a built-in desk with shelves can fit there neatly. It is a modest workspace, well suited to a laptop and the household paperwork.

If you recognise any of these, it’s worth talking to us:

  • Coats and shoes piling up in the hall
  • The low end of the space going to waste
  • Space under the stairs that is hard to use
  • A tired under-stairs cupboard that stands out

Near listed buildings like Church of St Mary the Virgin, less than half a mile north of the centre of Ladywell, older homes may keep original joinery that under-stairs cupboards can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent.

What to check before you book

  • How parking will work on your street
  • How doors and drawers are fitted
  • Is it spray painted or hand painted?
  • Are the boards named, like MDF or plywood?

Storage in Ladywell homes: local notes

Homes built before 1919 make up about 58% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Ladywell, with about 17% built since 2000, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. The St Mary's Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of Ladywell. Planning controls in conservation areas are mainly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitting furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need permission. If you’re unsure, check with the council before work starts. Flats in converted or shared houses account for about 27% of households in the neighbourhood around Ladywell, according to Census 2021. Conversions often leave rooms in unusual shapes, with partition walls, boxed-in pipes and chimney breasts in odd places, and the way in often goes up shared stairs. If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before anything is fixed to the walls.

If you live near Ladywell Fields, under-stairs cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things. Queen's House, about 2 miles north, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, the cupboard door under a period staircase can be kept or replaced to match the new storage.

Ladywell is about 1 mile north-west of New Cross, in the London Borough of Lewisham. Anywhere in Ladywell, it works the same way: we visit and measure, send a quote in writing, make the furniture in our workshop and fit it. Our Lewisham coverage includes Ladywell.

In SE13, SE6 and SE4, the process is the same as anywhere else in London. If you’re just outside Ladywell, we also cover Lewisham (1 mile north-east), Crofton Park (1 mile west), Hither Green (1 mile east), Brockley (1 mile west) and Catford (1 mile south). Elsewhere in Lewisham, we also cover Deptford (2 miles north), Surrey Canal (3 miles north-west), Sydenham (2 miles south-west), Perry Vale (2 miles south-west), Bell Green (2 miles south-west) and Forest Hill (2 miles west).

How we price under-stairs storage

When we put a quote together, we consider:

  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • How square the room is
  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls

No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. You will see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

Helping us understand the room

Ahead of the design visit, we will typically ask about:

  • Any ideas or images you’ve saved
  • Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • How you want to use the space

You don’t need exact measurements to get started. We measure everything properly during the design visit. To arrange it, send us a few details through our contact form and tell us about the room. You receive a quote in writing after the visit.

Questions from Ladywell

Does a conservation area in or near Ladywell affect fitted furniture?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

How do you fit under-stairs storage in a flat in Ladywell?

At the design visit, we measure the way in not just the room. Under-stairs cupboards are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.

How is the price worked out?

Every job is priced for its room: size, internal fittings, the finish and how tricky the walls are all play a part. The written quote follows the design visit.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

It can be done with some care: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. We do not treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.

What happens at the design visit?

We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, and the written quote comes afterwards.

Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?

That’s normal in older homes, and it is what scribing is for. Edges are scribed to the wall, and adjustable feet or a plinth bring the furniture up to level.
