How it is made
Doors and drawer fronts
What you see of the storage is mostly the doors and drawer fronts. They can be plain or panelled, with handles chosen to suit the hall. Their tops follow the angle of the stairs.
Moisture-resistant MDF
Hallways see wet coats, shoes and umbrellas, so a moisture-resistant grade makes sense. It gives the painted fronts a smooth base, and stays stable once it is fitted.
Under-stairs storage for homes in Aldersbrook
Every staircase has its own shape. The soffit slopes, the stringer sets its own line, and floors are often a little out of level. We scribe the storage to the stairs and the walls, so it looks as though it has always been there. That is something a standard unit cannot do, in Aldersbrook or anywhere else. Most enquiries start with cleaning things with no proper home and open space under the stairs that collects clutter, and the answer is made in our workshop from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.
Outside walls in houses from before 1919 are normally solid brick, which can be cold, so storage against it is designed with ventilation behind. A large share of the homes around Aldersbrook date from then. Damp should be sorted before anything is fitted against the wall.
After the design visit, we send you a written quote. It sets out the design we’ve talked through, the materials and the finish.

Fitted storage in Aldersbrook
In the area around Aldersbrook, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 55%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 18%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Near the centre of Aldersbrook, Historic England’s list includes Church of St Mary (Grade I), about 0.5 miles north, and Church of St Gabriel (Grade II), less than half a mile west. If your own home is listed, works inside that affect its character, such as fixing into or removing original joinery, can need listed building consent. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. Around Aldersbrook, about 55% of homes date from before 1919, well above the figure for Redbridge as a whole, about 27%, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). That makes period details like uneven walls, alcoves and picture rails more likely to shape the design.
If your home is one of the older houses near Church of St Gabriel, the cupboard door under a period staircase can be kept or replaced to match the new storage. Living in a block of flats near Wanstead Park station? Then under-stairs cupboards are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders
In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Mention it when you get in touch.
A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it, once we’ve measured the way in.
Is it time for under-stairs storage?
The most common reason is clutter. Things get pushed to the back, piled on top of each other and forgotten. Well-planned drawers and shelves give each thing a home, and you no longer need to empty the cupboard to reach one thing.
Here’s what under-stairs storage can help with:
- A sloping corner nobody can reach
- Space under the stairs that’s hard to use
- Nowhere to keep the vacuum and ironing board
- A staircase with untidy space beneath it
Close to Valentines Park? Living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and under-stairs cupboards can give those things a place.
What to check before you book
- How the doors are hung and adjusted
- Whether they measure the room themselves
- How parking will work on your street
- Whether you’ll get a written quote, not just a figure
Questions from Aldersbrook
Do you make under-stairs storage for homes in Aldersbrook?
Yes. Aldersbrook is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Redbridge and London. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with some details.
Is parking a problem for fitting in Aldersbrook?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the design visit.
Do I need to be in when you fit?
We need access, so someone has to let us in. You don’t need to watch us work, but it is useful to be around at the end.
What does an under-stairs cupboard cost?
Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. The size of the space, the number of drawers and doors, and the finish all shape the price. To get a quote, message us from the contact page and we’ll arrange a design visit.
How long does it take to fit under-stairs storage?
How long fitting takes depends on the shape of the space and the number of drawers and doors, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Drawers, doors and carcasses are all made in the workshop before we arrive. If you’d like the fitting on a Saturday, that can be arranged.
Which works best under the stairs, drawers or cupboards?
Often a mix works best. Deep pull-out drawers suit the shallow end under the bottom steps, and a cupboard at the tall end handles taller things. We talk it through at the design visit.
What under-stairs storage can’t fix
As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. It’s useful to know these before you plan the job:
- Gas pipework, which needs a Gas Safe engineer
- Altering or cutting into the stairs
- Plastering and decorating around the new storage
Not sure whether your space suits under-stairs storage? You can tell us about the room on our contact form and we will tell you. How it works.

- Moisture-resistant MDF

How fitting day works
The last stage of the day is the finish. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; hand painting, if that’s what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. Original hallway tiles and old floorboards are worth protecting, so they’re covered before anything comes in. Drilling into lath and plaster is done with care, so the plaster around stays sound. Any decorating around the new pieces is for your decorator.
- First we hear what’s under your stairs now and what you need, such as coats, shoes or the vacuum cleaner.
- At the design visit, the space is measured and any meters are noted.
- We talk through drawers, cupboards and coat storage, and send a written quote.
- Every part is made in our workshop, ready for a spray-painted or hand-painted finish. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit it in your home and check every drawer and door with you.
Before we arrive
- If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
- Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
- Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician ahead of time
