Under-Stairs Storage in Lower Clapton
Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. Our work on under-stairs storage in Lower Clapton starts with a design visit, and everything is built in our workshop.
- A staircase with untidy space beneath it
- Coats and shoes piling up in the hall
- Cleaning things with no proper home
Under-stairs storage for your home in Lower Clapton
Do you need under-stairs storage in Lower Clapton?
Many people struggle with the shallow, sloping end under the bottom steps. It’s too low to stand in and too deep to reach into. Pull-out drawers solve that by bringing the back of the space to you.
People typically get in touch with us about things like these:
- Storage that does not match the hallway
- A low corner too deep to reach into
- A dark, wasted space under the stairs
- A meter or fuse board buried behind clutter
If you live in a flat close to Homerton station, it helps to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day.
What to check before you book
- Real projects you can actually look at
- Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
- Whether the route into your home has been checked
- Will the quote be in writing?
Under-stairs storage in Lower Clapton
We make each under-stairs cupboard in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, which suits drawer boxes that carry weight, while MDF takes paint well for the doors and fronts. The finish is sprayed or hand-painted, and then the storage is fitted in your home in Lower Clapton. If you’re living with a low corner too deep to reach into and nowhere to put coats, shoes and bags, that is what under-stairs cupboards are for, made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.
Around Lower Clapton, most households live in purpose-built flats, and many blocks have rules on lift booking, deliveries and working hours. It helps to check them with the managing agent before fitting day. A lease can require consent for fixing to walls, so check yours first.
You get the quote in writing, so there’s time to read it properly and talk it over at home. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

What happens on fitting day
When the fitting is done, we tidy the room and lift the floor protection. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together and explain how to look after the paint. How long fitting takes depends on how much storage you want under the stairs, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. In a block without a lift, every section goes up the stairs, so it’s sized to be manageable. The tightest landing sets the largest piece. Once inside, the sections are joined and fixed.
- You get in touch and describe the stairs and the hall.
- We visit to measure the space at several points along the slope, as stairs and walls are rarely square in older houses.
- We send a written quote for the storage.
- In our workshop we build every part from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, following the slope we measured.
- On fitting day the units are set level and scribed to follow the stairs and walls. The finish is sprayed in the workshop or painted by hand once it is in.
How to prepare
- Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
- Empty the space we’ll be working in
- Tell us about parking near your home
Arranging a design visit
It is useful to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space, particularly with rough measurements. To share them, get in touch through our contact form, and we will arrange a design visit.

What else we make in Lower Clapton
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Flat-pack furniture is designed to be easy to carry home and quick to assemble. Bespoke storage is designed for one space and built to suit it, with birch plywood drawer boxes that hold screws well and carry weight. Which suits you depends on how much you want from the space. Standard furniture sizes rarely suit the shape of a flat, leaving gaps or crowding a door or radiator. Built-in pieces are designed around them.
Every room is priced on its own, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.
Why us?
- Saturday visits and fitting by arrangement
- We work across all London boroughs
- Spray painted or hand painted, in the colour you choose
- Built around your room

Storage in Lower Clapton homes: local notes
The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Lower Clapton were built before 1919 (about 37%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 21%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Lower Clapton include United Reformed Church (Grade II*), less than half a mile west, and Sutton House (Grade II*), less than half a mile south-west. For a listed home, internal works that affect its character may need listed building consent from the council, for example removing or fixing into original panelling. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. Purpose-built flats are home to about 58% of households in the streets around Lower Clapton, according to Census 2021. In a block, each section is sized to get up the stairs or into the lift and through the door. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.
If you live near Millfields Park, under-stairs cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things. For families living near Rushmore Primary School, under-stairs cupboards can give school bags, shoes and sports kit a proper home.

What affects the price in Lower Clapton
To work out the quote, we look at:
- Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
- How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
- Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
- Doors and drawers, and how many
We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. A larger piece means more material and more time, so size comes first. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.
What we need to know
There’s no need for exact sizes or plans. Just send what you can:
- Any ideas or images you have saved
- Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
- Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
- Approximate measurements of the space
We quote once we have seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, then send a written quote. Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. To arrange a visit, get in touch through our contact form.
Where other trades come in
We do not treat damp or carry out building work, so these points are worth knowing:
- Any wiring or new lights, which need an electrician
- Changing where a meter sits, which is not carpentry
- Painting the hallway walls and ceiling

Your questions about under-stairs storage in Lower Clapton
Is parking a problem for fitting in Lower Clapton?
It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.
Do you cover homes near Homerton station?
Yes, homes across Hackney and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit.
Are drawers or cupboards better under the stairs?
The answer depends on your stairs and what you’ll keep there. Pull-out drawers suit the low, deep end, as they bring the back within reach. Cupboards suit the tall end, for coats or a vacuum cleaner.
Can you build storage around a gas meter or fuse board?
Yes. Meters and fuse boards often sit under the stairs, and they need to stay accessible. At the design visit we measure around them and leave a clear way in. We do not move meters, so the storage works around their current position.
How long is the fitting for under-stairs storage?
How long fitting takes depends on the shape of the space and the number of drawers and doors, and your quote sets out the fitting days. We make every part in our workshop, so the time at your home is spent fitting. If you’d like the fitting on a Saturday, that can be arranged.
Do photos help?
Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit. Show anything the furniture has to work around, such as radiators or sockets.
