Under-stairs storage in Shoreditch

About our under-stairs storage in Shoreditch

Deep pull-out drawers bring the back of the space within reach. Instead of crawling in to find something, you slide the drawer out and everything is in view. Cupboards suit the taller end, where coats can hang and a vacuum cleaner can stand. A mix of drawers and cupboards is often the best use of the space. We make under-stairs cupboards from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and the usual reasons to get in touch are struggling to reach the gas or electricity meter and the low end of the space going to waste.

Floors in newer homes are often finished and easy to mark, so we cover them while we work. Many homes around Shoreditch were built since 2000, and stud walls there take fixings chosen for the board. Skirting can be scribed around, or the storage can sit on its own plinth.

Everything we agree at the measuring visit goes into the written quote: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it is easier before the furniture is made.

Shoreditch homes and under-stairs storage

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Shoreditch were built since 2000 (about 39%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 28%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Within a mile of the centre of Shoreditch, 30 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Newer homes are more common around Shoreditch than across Hackney: about 39% date from 2000 onwards, against about 24%, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Newer homes often have stud walls and compact rooms, so fixings and sizes are planned with that in mind.

Living in a block of flats near Shoreditch High Street station? Then each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. For a family home near Virginia Primary School, under-stairs cupboards can be planned around what a family needs to keep, from coats and bags to sports kit. Near listed buildings like Church of St Leonard, under half a mile north-east of the centre of Shoreditch, older homes may keep original joinery that under-stairs cupboards can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent.

Looking after your furniture

Looking after painted furniture is simple with a little care. These habits help most:

  • Let us know about parking near your home
  • Consider the colour of the hall, the stairs and the skirting
  • Decide whether you’d like coats on hooks or on a rail
  • Look for meters, a fuse board or pipes before we visit

Before we leave, we check every drawer and door with you. Any door to a meter or fuse board is checked so it opens fully and leaves the meter in view. You will know everything works as planned.

Damp coats and shoes put moisture into a closed space. Let them dry before they go away, and air the cupboard if it feels damp.

Flats, conversions and lettings

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations, and that is best sorted before fitting day. We cannot advise on your lease, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of, which we check at the design visit.

Materials and finishes

Spray-painted finish

Spraying gives a smooth, even surface. We spray in the workshop, so the finish is complete before fitting. You choose the colour.

Moisture-resistant MDF

Hallways see wet coats, shoes and umbrellas, so a moisture-resistant grade makes sense. It gives the painted fronts a smooth base, and stays stable once it’s fitted.

Questions we’re often asked

Is parking a problem for fitting in Shoreditch?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It is useful to let us know about parking at the measuring visit, and we’ll plan around it.

Can you make under-stairs storage for a home in Shoreditch?

Yes, Shoreditch is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Hackney and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.

Can under-stairs storage work around the fuse board?

Yes. It’s common to find a meter or fuse board under the stairs, and access has to be kept. At the design visit we measure around them and leave a clear way in. Moving a meter is not our work, so we design for where it is now.

Which works best under the stairs, drawers or cupboards?

The answer depends on your stairs and what you’ll keep there. Pull-out drawers suit the low, deep end, as they bring the back within reach. At the tall end, a cupboard is often better for coats and the vacuum.

Do you do the electrics?

No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.

Can I send photos before the visit?

Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit, along with rough measurements. It helps to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

How fitting day works

Every fitting follows the same order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. How long the fitting takes depends on the shape of the space and the number of drawers and doors, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Newer developments sometimes have their own parking and loading rules, so it is useful to let us know at the measuring visit. The furniture comes in sections and is fixed in place. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

  1. You let us know about the space under the stairs.
  2. We come to measure and discuss the design.
  3. A quote in writing follows.
  4. We make the drawers and cupboards in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The storage is fitted and finished, and we check each pull-out with you before we leave.
  6. Treat the fresh paintwork gently while it cures; a hand-painted finish is easy to touch up later.

Before we arrive

  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is usually a gap left over at the top or at one end. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can use the full height and width.
