Under-stairs storage in Stamford Hill, Hackney

Planning under-stairs storage for a home in Stamford Hill? It starts with a design visit to measure and talk through ideas, then a quote in writing, before anything is made.

  • Struggling to reach the gas or electricity meter
  • A sloping corner nobody can reach
  • A dark, wasted space under the stairs

Under-stairs storage in Stamford Hill

Flats, blocks and rented homes

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind.

Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. We choose fixings to suit the wall.

About our under-stairs storage in Stamford Hill

Pull-out drawers make the most of the low, deep end of the space. Rather than reaching into the dark, you pull the drawer towards you and see what’s inside. Cupboards suit the taller end, where coats can hang and a vacuum cleaner can stand. Many designs for homes in Stamford Hill combine the two. We make under-stairs cupboards from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are an old cupboard door that doesn’t suit the hall and an under-stairs cupboard full of clutter.

A Victorian or Edwardian terrace normally has a long, narrow hall leading to the stairs. A large share of the homes around Stamford Hill were built before 1919, so every bit of depth is weighed up when storage is planned. Even shallow storage can hold a lot without narrowing the way through.

If the job needs another trade, like an electrician or a plumber, we’ll tell you. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

How fitting works for under-stairs storage

In older rooms, the furniture typically has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details, so it looks as though it was always there. How long fitting takes depends on the shape of the space and the number of drawers and doors, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. In a period home, the furniture is fitted to walls that are not straight, so each piece is trimmed and adjusted on site. We protect the floors and keep dust to a minimum. It is useful to let us know about parking at the design visit, as terraced streets are often busy.

  1. It starts with a few details from you about the space.
  2. At the design visit we measure and plan how you will use the space.
  3. We send a written quote covering the design, materials and finish.
  4. The storage is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The storage is fitted and finished, and we check each pull-out with you before we leave.
  6. New paint needs time to cure fully, so open and close things gently at first.

Before we arrive

Starting with a design visit

Every quote follows a design visit. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, and the written quote comes after. Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. To arrange a visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Common questions about under-stairs storage

I live near Stamford Hill station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Hackney and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can use our contact form with a few details about the room.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Stamford Hill?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.

Are drawers or cupboards better under the stairs?

Often a mix works best. Deep pull-out drawers suit the shallow end under the bottom steps, while a cupboard at the tall end takes coats, the vacuum or an ironing board. We talk it through during the design visit.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Typically not. Inside a house, fitted furniture does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings can require listed building consent for works that affect their character, so check with the council first.

Can under-stairs storage work around the fuse board?

Yes. Meters and fuse boards often sit under the stairs, and they need to stay accessible. At the design visit we measure around them and leave a clear way in. Moving a meter isn’t our work, so we design for where it is now.

Which materials go into your under-stairs cupboards?

The storage is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. The doors and fronts are MDF, which is stable and paints well, and birch plywood is strong, so it suits drawer boxes and carcasses. Everything is finished by spray painting or hand painting.

Do you need under-stairs storage in Stamford Hill?

With more people working from home, some want a desk tucked under the stairs. If the space opens onto a room, a compact desk with shelves above can sit beneath the stairs. It will not replace a full home office, but it suits paperwork and a laptop.

Here’s what under-stairs storage can help with:

  • Nowhere to keep the vacuum and ironing board
  • A dark, wasted space under the stairs
  • The low end of the space going to waste
  • No room for a small desk or a place to work

Near listed buildings like Church of St Andrew, less than half a mile west of the centre of Stamford Hill, older homes may keep original joinery that under-stairs cupboards can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent.

What to check before you book

  • Whether you’ll get a quote in writing, not just a figure
  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?

Our checklist for choosing a carpenter

Before and after fitting day

None of this takes much effort. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Make room so the whole space can be measured
  • Note the size of anything tall you want to store
  • Count the coats and pairs of shoes in daily use
  • Think about what you will keep in each drawer

Wiping the fronts with a soft, damp cloth is usually all they need. Dry them afterwards, and avoid abrasive pads and strong solvents. Handles and the edges of drawers are touched most, so give them a wipe now and then.

Check now and then that handles and hinges are tight. Tightening a screw early stops a small looseness becoming a problem. If a door drops or a drawer starts to catch, message us from the contact page and let us know what’s happening.

What we do not do

We make and fit furniture, and we don’t do electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering or structural work. There are a few other points to bear in mind:

  • Electrical work under the stairs, which your electrician carries out
  • Painting the hallway walls and ceiling
  • Gas pipework, which needs a Gas Safe registered engineer

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can get in touch through our contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer. How a job runs, step by step.

Storage in Stamford Hill homes: local notes

Homes built before 1919 make up about 52% of the housing in the area around Stamford Hill, with about 19% built between 1945 and 1972, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Within a mile of the centre of Stamford Hill, 10 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Parking on many inner London streets is controlled, with zones run by each borough. So a van fitting furniture in Stamford Hill usually needs a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension arranged through the council. Tell us what parking is near you at the measuring visit.

Living in a block of flats near Stamford Hill station? Then check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in. If you live near Abney Park, living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and under-stairs cupboards can give those things a place.
