How we make under-stairs storage for Hackney Marshes

In many terraced houses, the gas meter, electricity meter or fuse board sits under the stairs. These must stay easy to reach for meter readers and engineers. We plan the storage around them, usually with a door that leaves them in clear reach, so the space works hard without hiding anything that matters. If you’re not sure what’s under your stairs in Hackney Marshes, we will look when we visit. If you are living with a tired under-stairs cupboard that stands out and a meter or fuse board buried behind clutter, under-stairs cupboards made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand can solve it.

In a part of London with mixed housing, like much of the city, floors, walls and ceilings vary from one home to the next. Under-stairs cupboards are scribed and levelled on site, so they look straight even where the room isn’t. You choose the paint colour, and whether it’s spray-painted or hand-painted.

A written quote follows the design visit. It sets out the design we’ve talked through, the materials and the finish.

From workshop to your room

Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site. How long the fitting takes depends on the shape of the space and the number of drawers and doors, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. London parking ranges from controlled zones to driveways and private bays, so let us know what’s near you at the measuring visit. For a flat, building rules on lifts and working hours are worth checking.

  1. You contact us about the space under your stairs.
  2. We visit to measure the space at several points along the slope, as stairs and walls are rarely square in older houses.
  3. Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
  4. In our workshop we build every part from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, following the slope we measured.
  5. We fit the storage in your home, trimming the edges so they meet the stairs neatly. The finish is sprayed in the workshop or painted by hand once it’s in.

How to prepare

  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way

How to get a quote

Advice

FAQs: under-stairs storage in Hackney Marshes

Do you cover homes near Lea Bridge station?

Yes. We cover all of Hackney and the rest of London. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with a few details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Hackney Marshes?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Normally not. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. Listed buildings may need listed building consent for works that affect their character.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

It needs a little planning: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. Damp treatment isn’t something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.

Can the under-stairs storage be painted to match the hall?

Yes. The storage is spray-painted or hand-painted in a colour agreed with you. You can match it to the walls, the banisters or the skirting, so it sits quietly in the hall.

Can you fit a small desk under the stairs?

That depends on the shape of your stairs and the room beside them. At the design visit we’ll say whether a desk makes sense there. Where it works, it makes a neat spot for a laptop and paperwork.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Off-the-shelf storage isn’t designed around a meter or a fuse board. Fitted in front of one, it can make access tricky for readings and safety checks. Bespoke storage is planned around them from the start. Off-the-shelf furniture comes in set sizes, and real rooms rarely match them, so it leaves gaps at the ends and empty space above. Built-in pieces fill the space they’re made for.

How it’s painted is part of the price: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

What it’s made from

Plinths and scribe strips

We trim scribe strips to the exact line of the wall. They’re one reason fitted storage looks built in. At floor level, the plinth hides any slope in the floor.

Pull-out drawers

Pull-out drawers bring the deep, low end of the space within reach. We size each drawer for what you plan to keep in it. A set of drawers can step down to follow the line of the stairs.

Flats, leases and landlords

A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind, once we’ve measured the way in.

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations, which is worth sorting early. We can’t give advice on leases, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.

Do you need under-stairs storage in Hackney Marshes?

A hallway full of shoes and coats is a common reason to get in touch. With a rail, hooks and shoe drawers under the stairs, the hall stays clear, and the family has an obvious place to put things.

Under-stairs storage can help with:

  • Stairs open to a room, with clutter on show
  • Space under the stairs that’s hard to use
  • A vacuum cleaner that has nowhere to go
  • A sloping corner nobody can reach

For a family home near Kingsmead Primary School, under-stairs cupboards can be planned around what a family needs to keep, from coats and bags to sports kit.
