Under-stairs storage in New Barnet: what you get
In many terraced houses, the gas meter, electricity meter or fuse board sits under the stairs. They need to stay accessible, so readings and safety checks can still be made. We plan the storage around them, usually with a door that leaves them in clear reach, so you gain storage without losing access. If you are not sure what’s under your stairs in New Barnet, we will look when we visit. If your home has cleaning things with no proper home and an under-stairs cupboard full of clutter, that is what under-stairs cupboards are for, made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.
In an area where interwar homes or semis make up much of the housing, as around New Barnet, many have had the loft converted, leaving low eaves and sloping ceilings. Those spaces, along with bays and hallways, are where fitted storage can add the most. We build storage in lofts that are already converted or boarded.
A written quote follows the design visit. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so it’s clear what’s included.

Where other trades come in
Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work are not part of what we do. There are a few other points to bear in mind:
- Structural changes to the staircase itself
- Moving gas pipes under the stairs
- Plastering and decorating around the new storage

Why bespoke in New Barnet?
Ready-made units are designed for shipping and quick assembly. Ours is designed for one staircase and built in our workshop to suit it, using birch plywood for strong drawer boxes and moisture-resistant MDF for painted fronts. Which suits you depends on how much you want from the space. Ready-made units come in standard depths that rarely suit every space, which may be too deep for one spot and too shallow for another. With fitted furniture, the depth is chosen for the room.
Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

Materials and finishes
Birch plywood
Its layered build gives birch plywood its strength. It goes into the carcasses, the shelves and the drawer boxes, and its edge can be left visible or painted to match.
Plinths and scribe strips
We trim scribe strips to the exact line of the wall. They help the storage look as though it was always there. At floor level, the plinth hides any slope in the floor.
How fitting day works
Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site, so it looks as though it was always there. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the space and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. In a 1920s or 1930s house, the hall and stairs are normally simple, but the route in is still measured, not just the room. Under-stairs cupboards arrive in sections and are assembled in place, with floors protected throughout.
- You get in touch and tell us what’s under the stairs now, including any gas meter, electricity meter or fuse board.
- We visit to measure the slope and the floor, and agree a design that keeps any meter or fuse board accessible.
- You receive a written quote for the storage.
- The storage is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with access to the meters planned in.
- The storage is fitted and set level, and the meter access is checked with you.
Before fitting day
- Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
- Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
Arranging a design visit
Getting a quote starts with a few details: which room it is, rough measurements and a couple of photos if you can take them. To send them, get in touch through our contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and discuss the design, then send a written quote.

Flat-pack or bespoke?
Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that aren’t square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.
It is worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture usually costs less up front. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is awkward, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.
Common questions about under-stairs storage
Can you fit furniture in a home close to New Barnet station?
Yes, homes across Barnet and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with a few details about the room.
Is New Barnet in the area you cover for under-stairs storage?
Yes. We cover all of Barnet and the rest of London, and New Barnet is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.
Is it possible to have a desk built under the stairs?
In many homes it’s possible, if the space is open to a room and tall enough at one end. We can build a desk with shelves and drawers to suit the space. Any socket or light there is for your electrician, and we plan around it.
Do you move sockets or add lighting?
No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.
Do you work on Saturdays?
Yes, Saturdays are possible by arrangement. Just mention it when you contact us, and we will see what we can do.
What if the wall is cold or damp?
It needs a little planning: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. Damp treatment isn’t something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.
Storage in New Barnet homes: local notes
About 32% of the homes in the streets around New Barnet went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 23% between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures.
