About our fitted wardrobes in New Barnet
We make fitted wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood in our workshop. The doors are finished with spray paint in the workshop or painted by hand, in a colour agreed with you. We then fit them in your home, setting them level on adjustable feet or a plinth and scribing them to the walls and ceiling. If you’re living with condensation behind a wardrobe on an outside wall and wasted space beside the chimney breast, fitted wardrobes made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed can solve it.
A good part of the housing around New Barnet is interwar, semi-detached or detached. If yours is a 1920s or 1930s house, the box room over the stairs is a classic spot for fitted furniture, and the bulkhead is built around rather than ignored. Main bedrooms from that era are often a good size, with a bay window at the front.
If the job needs another trade, like an electrician or a plumber, we’ll tell you, so it can be arranged before fitting day. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

Bespoke fitted wardrobes or ready-made?
Large flat-pack wardrobes can be hard to build in a small bedroom. We make fitted wardrobes in sections sized to the route into your home, ready to assemble in the room. Bays, box rooms and stair bulkheads are where off-the-shelf furniture struggles most, and those are common in interwar houses. Built-in pieces are designed to fit them.
Awkward rooms take more time: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. The quote allows for it.
Why choose Bespoke Carpentry in New Barnet
- More than 300 projects completed
- A spray or hand-painted finish
- Made for your room, not a standard size
- Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood
Take a look at bespoke vs off-the-shelf and what a quote should include.
Before and after fitting day
Getting the most from fitted wardrobes starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. Here are some things worth bearing in mind:
- Measure the gap between the wardrobe wall and the bed
- Work out the split between long and short hanging
- Ask your electrician about moving sockets early
- Check the route into your flat, not just the room
Doors can settle a little once the wardrobes are filled. Most hinges can be adjusted to bring a door back in line, and sliding doors can be adjusted on their runners.
Let doors close gently rather than slamming, and keep sliding doors from crashing into the ends. It helps the hinges and runners stay true.
Why people ask for fitted wardrobes in New Barnet
The usual reason is simple: there is not enough storage. Clothes end up on chairs, in boxes under the bed or in another room. Built-in wardrobes make use of the full wall, up to the ceiling, so you get more storage from the same floor space.
Some of the things we are asked to solve include:
- Wardrobes that are full to bursting
- Clothes with nowhere proper to go
- Musty smells in a wardrobe on a cold wall
- Wasted space beside the chimney breast
For a flat near New Barnet station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.

Questions we are often asked
Is New Barnet in the area you cover for fitted wardrobes?
Yes. We cover all of Barnet and the rest of London, and New Barnet is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.
I live near New Barnet station. Is that in your area?
Yes. We cover all of Barnet and the rest of London. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.
Does someone need to be home during the fitting?
We need access, so someone has to let us in. You don’t need to watch us work, but it’s useful to be around at the end.
Will a sloping floor cause problems for fitted wardrobes?
Floors in older houses are often out of level. We set fitted wardrobes level on a plinth or adjustable feet and the doors line up.
Which is better for fitted wardrobes, hinged or sliding doors?
It depends on the room. Hinged doors open a whole section at once but need room in front to swing. We talk through both during the design visit.
How much will my fitted wardrobe cost?
Size, doors and drawers, what goes inside and the finish all affect it. The price comes in a quote in writing after the design visit.
How fitting day works
On the morning of the fitting, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. The sections made in our workshop come in next, a piece at a time. How long fitting takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Loft stairs in an interwar house can be tight, with a low ceiling at the top, so any section going up there is sized for them. Elsewhere in the house, the route is usually more generous. The pieces are joined and fixed once in place.
- You describe the bedroom and the storage you need.
- We come to measure and talk through hanging heights, doors and drawers, with your clothes in mind.
- We put the design, materials and finish into a written quote.
- Once you’re happy, the wardrobes are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We bring them to your home and fit them in place. We adjust the doors so they hang and close evenly.
Before we arrive
- Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
- Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
Starting with a design visit
You do not need exact measurements to get started. Everything is measured properly when we visit, along with the walls, floor and ceiling. To get started, get in touch through our contact form and tell us about the room. The written quote follows the visit.

If your home in New Barnet is on or near a main road, tell us at the design visit. We’ll plan where the van can stop. TfL’s Ultra Low Emission Zone covers every part of London, Barnet included. It applies to the vans that deliver and fit furniture in New Barnet, as it does anywhere else in London. We go through parking and access at the design visit.
If you live near Victoria Recreation Ground, a bedroom facing the green is best kept light, with the furniture on the side walls. If your home is one of the older houses near Holy Trinity Lyonsdown, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design.
