About our built-in bookshelves in New Barnet

Shelf depth depends on what you keep. Paperbacks need much less depth than hardbacks, art books or records. Deep shelves let small books disappear behind each other, while shallow ones leave large books overhanging. Deeper cupboards below and shallower shelves above often work well. If you’re living with bare walls that could hold shelving and shelves that suit a period room, built-in bookshelves made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish can solve it.

Ceilings in interwar houses tend to be lower than in Victorian ones, so built-in bookshelves are proportioned to the room rather than copied from a taller one. Where your home is one of the interwar houses or semis that are a big part of the housing around New Barnet, the cornice may be plain or missing, so the furniture can run straight to the ceiling. The skirting is scribed around neatly.

A quote in writing follows the design visit. It sets out the design we’ve talked through, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you are getting.

Questions from New Barnet

Do you cover homes near New Barnet station?

Yes. We cover all of Barnet and the rest of London. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with a few details about the room.

Is New Barnet in the area you cover for built-in bookshelves?

Yes, we work across Barnet, New Barnet included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with some details.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

How deep should bookshelves be?

That depends on your books. Paperbacks need much less depth than art books or records, so many people mix depths. We plan depths around your collection during the design visit.

Does fitted furniture need planning permission?

Usually not. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. If the building is listed, works affecting its character may need listed building consent, so ask the council’s conservation officer.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Just mention it when you get in touch, and we will see what we can do.

Flats, conversions and lettings

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them at the design visit.

In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through without a struggle.

What affects the price in New Barnet

Not every room costs the same, and it comes down to:

  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers

We do not publish set prices, because each job is designed for a single room. Instead, we measure, discuss the design and then quote in writing. To start, get in touch through our contact form.

What we need to know

When you contact us, these help most:

  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • Examples of the look you’re after
  • Your postcode and the borough

The quote is built from the design visit. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and talk through the design with you. A quote in writing follows the visit, so you can take your time with it. To arrange the visit, use our contact form.

What happens on fitting day

Finishing comes last. With a spray finish from the workshop, there is normally only filling and touching up to do in the room; hand painting, if that is what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. It’s useful to clear the room and the route before we arrive. On the day, we cover the floors first, then bring the sections in. Each piece is levelled, scribed where the wall wanders and fixed to suit the wall.

  1. You get in touch with some details about where the bookshelves will go.
  2. We visit to measure the wall, the openings and the skirting, cornice and picture rail the shelves must meet.
  3. A written quote follows, with the design, materials and finish.
  4. We build the shelving in sections in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. On fitting day each section is set level and scribed to walls that are rarely straight, so there are no gaps along the sides.
  6. The finish is either sprayed in our workshop or hand-painted once the shelves are in place.

Before we arrive

  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room

Getting a quote

Getting a quote starts with a few details: the room, rough measurements and some photos if you have them. When you are ready, message us from the contact page. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and discuss the design, then send a written quote.

Advice

The problems built-in bookshelves solve

Often, the books simply have nowhere left to go. They’re stacked on the floor, two deep on the shelves or packed into boxes. A built-in bookcase uses a whole wall for far more space than a standalone bookcase.

Typical reasons people contact us include:

  • Shelves that suit a period room
  • Somewhere to keep toys and books tidy
  • Bare walls that could hold shelving
  • Shelves that sag under books

If you live in a period home close to Holy Trinity Lyonsdown, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for built-in bookshelves.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
  • Are the boards named, like MDF or plywood?
  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

Could you do it yourself?

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.

Built-in bookshelves in New Barnet: local notes

Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 32% of the housing in the neighbourhood around New Barnet, with about 23% built between 1945 and 1972, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Red routes, run by TfL, have strict rules on stopping and loading. If you live on or close to a main road in New Barnet, let us know at the measuring visit. We’ll plan where the van can stop. Around a third of the homes in the neighbourhood around New Barnet (about 32%) date from between 1919 and 1939, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Houses from the 1920s and 1930s often have a bay window and a chimney breast in the front room, and built-in bookshelves are planned around both.

For families living near St Mary's CofE Primary School, a cupboard for board games and a shelf for reading books can go into the same design. For a flat near New Barnet station, built-in bookshelves are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room.
