Questions from New Barnet
I live near New Barnet station. Is that in your area?
Yes. We cover all of Barnet and the rest of London. To get started, you can use our contact form with some details about the room.
Is parking a problem for fitting in New Barnet?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.
How long is the fitting for a home office?
How long the fitting takes depends on how much desk, shelving and storage you want, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Every part is made at our workshop before we arrive. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.
How do you get large furniture into a flat?
The furniture is built in sections, each one sized to fit the way in. At the design visit, we measure the route not just the room.
What do you do at the measuring visit?
It is a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, and the written quote comes afterwards.
Can you fit a desk under a sloping ceiling?
Yes, in a converted loft room. Headroom is the main thing to plan around, so you can stand at the desk. Lower areas can take cupboards and shelves.
How we make fitted home offices for New Barnet
Working from home is easier when the desk, shelves and storage are built for the job. Our home offices are made for spare rooms, alcoves, landings and loft rooms, planned around how you work. For a home in New Barnet, it starts with a design visit to measure and talk it through. People typically come to us about a screen that’s hard to read by the window and no way to put work away; the furniture is made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
A compact desk under the stairs or on a landing suits someone who works from home now and then. Around New Barnet, where interwar homes and semis are a big part of the housing, a landing or the space below the stairs could hold a compact desk. Closed storage keeps paperwork tidy. Meters and fuse boards stay reachable.
The quote comes in writing, so you can read it at your own pace and share it with anyone else involved. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

From workshop to your room
Every fitting follows the same order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. How long fitting takes depends on the layout and how many pieces make up the office, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Fitting day means carrying in the sections, joining them and fitting them to the walls. Spray-painted pieces come finished from the workshop, while hand painting can happen on site. Saturdays can be arranged.
- You tell us how you work and where you’d like the office, whether that’s a spare room, an alcove or a landing.
- At the design visit, the room is measured and the layout planned.
- The design is agreed and a written quote follows.
- Every part is made at our workshop, ready for a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
- We fit it in your home and check every drawer and door with you.
Before fitting day
- Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician ahead of time
- Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
- Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
Starting with a design visit
Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it. For a quote, tell us about the room on our contact form.
Advice
Honest limits
Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work aren’t part of what we do. Please bear these in mind too:
- Making good the walls, which is for a plasterer or decorator
- Setting up computers, screens or networks
- Any wiring or new lights, which need an electrician
Not sure whether your space suits fitted home offices? You can fill in our short enquiry form and we will tell you. How a job runs, step by step.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders
In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so each section is sized to get through without a struggle.
If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so it is worth raising during the design visit.

Built-in desks and shelving in New Barnet
Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 32% of the housing in the neighbourhood around New Barnet, with about 23% built between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how home offices are fixed and fitted. About 32% of homes in the streets around New Barnet date from between 1919 and 1939, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Many interwar houses have a small room over the stairs that suits a built-in desk. Detached and semi-detached houses are home to about 44% of households in the area around New Barnet, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. A house like that typically has more rooms to plan around than a flat, and sometimes a driveway that makes unloading easier.
For a flat near New Barnet station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in. For an older house near Holy Trinity Lyonsdown, an alcove beside the chimney breast is often just right for a built-in desk. For families living near St Mary's CofE Primary School, a desk long enough for two can serve a laptop and a homework book side by side.

Could you do it yourself?
Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.
A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls.
Materials and finishes
Shelves
Open shelves above a desk keep books in reach. Lower, deeper shelves suit files and a printer. The design visit is where depths are agreed.
Moisture-resistant MDF
Because it cuts cleanly, MDF suits panels and angled pieces. The grade we use is moisture-resistant and paints well. Most of what you see is MDF.
