Window seats in North Finchley, Barnet

Planning window seats for a home in North Finchley? It starts with a design visit to measure and talk through ideas, then a quote in writing, before anything is made.

  • No space for toys and games
  • Wanting a seat without blocking the radiator
  • A bay with no furniture that fits

When you need someone else

Not everything around window seats is carpentry, from an electrician to a plumber or an engineer on the Gas Safe Register. Here’s what to know:

  • Seat cushions, which you source separately
  • Repairs to sash windows, cills or shutters
  • Electrical work around the seat

Window seats in North Finchley: what you get

Window seats work in bedrooms and children’s rooms as well as living rooms. Drawers or a lift-up lid turn it into storage as well as seating. Drawers can be easier than a lid for children to use. Whatever the room, the process for a home in North Finchley is the same. If your home has nowhere to keep blankets, toys or books and off-the-shelf pieces that never quite fit the window, window seats made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.

In a part of London with mixed housing, like much of the city, no two homes have quite the same walls and floors. Each piece is scribed to the wall and set level, whatever the room is like. The finish, spray-painted or hand-painted, is agreed with you.

You get the quote in writing, so you can read it at your own pace and share it with anyone else involved. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

Tips worth knowing

These points come up often when people plan window seats. They help whatever the room:

  • Check whether there’s a radiator under the window
  • Clear the bay or window area before the design visit
  • Think about whether you’d like shelves either side
  • Make sure any shutters still open fully

Before we leave, we check every lid and drawer with you. Any grille is checked so the radiator can still warm the room. You will know it all works as it should.

Wipe away condensation from the window before it runs onto the seat. A little fresh air helps reduce condensation. Do not leave water sitting on the painted surface.

Fitting day, step by step

On the morning of the fitting, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. The sections made in our workshop come in next, one at a time. How long fitting takes depends on whether the seat has drawers, a lift-up lid or a radiator grille, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Fitting day means joining the sections, fitting them to the walls and setting them level. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether brick, block, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

  1. You let us know about the window and the room.
  2. At the design visit, every side of the window is measured.
  3. We agree the seat, the storage and the finish, and send a quote in writing.
  4. Every part is built in our workshop, ready for a spray-painted or hand-painted finish. The materials are moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home and check every lid and drawer with you.

Before fitting day

  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves

Starting with a design visit

Photos help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space. To send them over, drop us a line using the contact form, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.

When is bespoke worth it?

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

Cost matters, and it is fair to say so: flat-pack is normally cheaper to buy. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is awkward, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

Flats, conversions and lettings

If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, unloading takes some planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so let us know about it during the design visit.

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so each section is sized to get through without a struggle.

Questions we’re often asked

Is North Finchley in the area you cover for window seats?

Yes, we work across Barnet, North Finchley included, and across the rest of London. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit.

My home in North Finchley is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

At the design visit, we measure the way in as well as the room. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It is useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, Saturdays are possible by prior arrangement. Just mention it when you contact us.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. You don’t need to watch us work, but it helps to be around at the end.

Do you do the electrics?

No. We’re carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design.

Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?

It’s something we deal with all the time. The furniture is scribed to follow the walls and levelled on feet or a plinth.
