TV and media units in North Finchley
About our TV and media units in North Finchley
Cables are the part most people want to hide. We plan cable routes through the unit from the start, with openings and removable panels so you can add or swap leads later. We make the routes, and your electrician handles any wiring. If you’re living with set-top boxes stacked on a stand and empty alcoves beside the TV, TV and media units made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand can solve it.
Homes in an area like North Finchley can come from many different periods, so the walls behind TV and media units could be solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. We check what the walls are made of at the design visit, then choose the fixings. With a chimney breast, TV and media units typically fill the alcoves; without one, they can run along a whole wall.
We write quotes in plain English, without jargon. They say what will be made, what it is made from and how it will be finished.

Common questions about TV and media units
I live in a flat in North Finchley. How will the furniture get up the stairs?
At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. TV and media units are made at our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in North Finchley?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.
Will my boxes get too hot inside the unit?
Equipment gives off heat, so it needs air around it. The unit is planned with open backs or gaps where boxes go, rather than sealing it in a cupboard. Once it’s in, don’t block the gaps.
How is the price worked out?
Size, doors and drawers, what goes inside and the finish all affect it, along with access and parking. We send a quote in writing after the design visit.
What happens when you come to measure?
We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. We’ll also ask about access and parking.
Where should speakers go in a TV unit?
We plan open spaces for speakers and soundbars. Closed doors muffle sound.
Flats, leases and landlords
For flats on red routes or busy main roads, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so it is worth raising at the measuring visit.
For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants. An agent can arrange access for you.
How it is made
Hand-painted finish
Hand painting often suits units in older houses. You choose the colour.
Doors and drawer fronts
Drawers suit games, controllers and remotes close to hand. They’re painted in the same colour as the rest.
How fitting works for TV and media units
In older rooms, the furniture typically has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site, so it sits neatly against the room. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and how many cupboards and shelves it has, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. On fitting day, the sections are assembled, scribed to the walls and levelled. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether brick, block, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.
- You get in touch with details of the room and where it is in your home.
- At the design visit we measure the wall and also the hall, stairs and doorways the unit has to pass through. Let us know about parking too, since a van may need a visitor permit or a paid bay.
- A written quote follows, setting out the design, materials and finish.
- In our workshop we make the unit in sections from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- The sections are carried in, assembled and set level, ready for your equipment.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
- Keep pets in another room while we work
Ask for a quote
To get a quote, send us a few details through our contact form and tell us a little about the room. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and send you a quote in writing afterwards.
Advice
What it costs
A few things affect what fitted furniture costs:
- Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
- Spray painting or hand painting
- Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
- Parking near your home
Access to the room makes a difference too. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying. The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose.
What to send when you contact us
There is no need for exact sizes or plans. Just send what you can:
- Where you live, with the postcode
- Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
- Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
- The type of home and how the room is reached
Rough sizes are fine at the start. Everything is measured properly when we visit, along with the walls, floor and ceiling. To arrange it, get in touch through our contact form and let us know about the room. The written quote follows the visit.
Built-in living-room furniture in North Finchley
About 29% of the homes in the area around North Finchley went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 26% before 1919, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. There are 10 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of North Finchley. Being near listed buildings doesn’t make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. About 43% of households in the streets around North Finchley live in purpose-built flats, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. For a flat, TV and media units are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day.
If you live in a flat close to New Southgate station, TV and media units are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. If you live in a period home close to St. Barnabas Church, walls that bow and floors that slope are why TV and media units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. If you live near Friary Park, TV and media units can be planned to frame a window with a view rather than block it.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?
Off-the-shelf TV units come in a few set colours. Ours are painted in a colour agreed with you, by spray or by hand. Off-the-shelf furniture comes in set sizes, and real rooms rarely match them, which leaves gaps at the sides and wasted space on top. Built-in pieces fill the space they’re made for.
Rooms that aren’t square take more work: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. The quote allows for it, which we write after seeing the room.
