Loft storage in North Finchley: what you get
Dormers are a natural place for shelving or a small desk. Dormers have their own shapes, and walls that are seldom square. Each piece is scribed to the dormer. It adds storage without taking up the main floor. We will talk through the options in North Finchley. We make eaves cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and the things people most often want solved are standard furniture that won’t go up the loft stairs and unused space in a dormer.
Some homes have eaves, some have bays and some have neither, but most have a recess, a landing or a corner that could take storage. For a home in North Finchley, the design visit is where the options are worked out. Eaves cupboards are then made at our workshop and fitted on site.
The quote comes in writing, so you can read it at your own pace and share it with anyone else involved. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

How fitting day works
There isn’t much for you to do on fitting day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and it is useful to have the room cleared beforehand. After that, it’s over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. How long fitting takes depends on the shape of the room and the number of cupboards and drawers, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. If you live in a block, check any rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours; if you live in a house, let us know about steps, paths and parking. Either way, the day is planned during the design visit. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.
- It starts when you get in touch about storage in your loft, whether it is a converted room or a boarded space.
- At the design visit, we look at the slopes, the eaves and the way up.
- Your quote sets out the design, the materials and the finish. You can ask us about any of it.
- We make the cupboards and drawers in our workshop, cut to the slope.
- The storage is fitted and set level, ready to fill, with the doors and drawers checked with you.
How to prepare
- Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician in advance
- Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
- Make sure pets are kept safely away

Loft storage in North Finchley: local notes

It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. For a flat, eaves cupboards are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.
If you live near Friary Park, eaves cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things. For a family home near Sacks Morasha Jewish Primary School, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up.

The problems loft storage solve
Most people get in touch because the eaves are going to waste. Behind the knee walls, there is space nobody can reach. Built-in storage makes that space useful.
A few of the things people ask us to solve are these:
- A boarded loft with no proper shelving
- A sloping ceiling with no room for a wardrobe
- A new loft conversion that needs storage
- Low eaves that nobody can use
Heath Hall, about 2.9 miles south, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, eaves cupboards in a converted loft are scribed to slopes that are rarely even.
What to check before you book

- Have they thought about parking near you?
- How the furniture will be finished, and where
- How they handle walls that are not straight
Common questions about loft storage
Do you make loft storage for homes in North Finchley?
Yes. We cover all of Barnet and the rest of London, and North Finchley is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in North Finchley?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the design visit.
Can you build a wardrobe under a sloping ceiling?
Yes. We shape the wardrobe to follow the slope, with hanging at the tall end and shelves or drawers lower down. It makes the most of the space. We plan it at the measuring visit.
What materials do you use for loft storage?
The storage is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood gives strength to the carcasses and drawers, and MDF takes paint well for the doors and panels. The finish is spray-painted or hand-painted.
Will cupboards in the eaves stop air moving?
Not when it’s planned well. We look behind the knee wall at the measuring visit and plan the storage so air can still move. We do not alter insulation or vents.
Does someone need to be home during the fitting?
Someone needs to be there to let us in. You do not need to watch us work.
Honest limits
As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. It’s useful to know these before you plan the job:
- Altering the structure of the loft
- Building work to turn a loft into a room
- Adding or replacing insulation
If in doubt, you can fill in our short enquiry form and describe the room. How a job runs, step by step.
What it’s made from
- Spray-painted finish
- Eaves doors and drawers
- Hand-painted finish
- Sloped wardrobe tops
- Moisture-resistant MDF
- Birch plywood
Flats, leases and landlords
In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of.
In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through.
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.
Cost matters, and it is fair to say so: off-the-shelf furniture normally costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is tricky, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.
