Walk-in wardrobes for homes in North Kensington

Hanging space is the heart of most walk-in wardrobes. Full-length hanging takes coats, dresses and long garments, while double hanging, one rail above another, fits shirts and jackets into half the height. The balance of long and double hanging is based on your clothes. If you are living with separate space for two people’s clothes and long and double hanging planned around your clothes, walk-in wardrobes made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand can solve it.

Older bedrooms normally have generous ceiling heights, and a large share of the homes around North Kensington date from then. That height can be used, with fitted furniture taken up to the cornice and top cupboards for occasional things. Picture rails, skirting boards and coving are met neatly or cut around.

Our quotes are written in plain words, without jargon. They say what will be made, what it’s made from and how it will be finished, taken from what we agreed at the visit.

Honest limits

We make and fit furniture, and we do not do electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering or structural work. There are a few other points to bear in mind:

  • Getting consent under your lease
  • Fixing the cause of damp
  • Making good walls and ceilings

Not sure whether your space suits walk-in wardrobes? You can tell us about the room on our contact form and we will tell you. Our process from visit to fitting.

Materials and parts

  • Spray-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Hanging, shelves and drawers
  • Dressing table
  • Shoe storage
  • Birch plywood

What affects the price in North Kensington

Several things affect the price:

  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls
  • Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside

We don’t publish set prices, because each job is designed for a single room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a written quote, naming the materials and finish. To arrange a design visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

Getting in touch

What helps most when you first contact us:

  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner

For a quote for walk-in wardrobes in North Kensington, fill in our short enquiry form. Let us know which room it is and roughly what you have in mind, with sizes if you have them. We’ll arrange a design visit, then send a quote in writing.

What prompts walk-in wardrobes in North Kensington

Others want to clear the bedroom of wardrobes. Moving clothes into a separate space leaves the bedroom simpler and quieter to look at.

Requests we hear often include:

  • A walk-in wardrobe within the bedroom
  • Room for two wardrobes in one space
  • Shelves for shoes and bags
  • A use for a small spare room

For families living near Barlby Primary School, a mix of drawers and shelves copes with school uniform as well as everything else.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
  • Whether you’ll get a written quote, not just a figure
  • Whether the finish is set out in the quote
  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?

Tips worth knowing

Most of what helps is simple. What we’d suggest:

  • Wipe painted surfaces with a soft, damp cloth
  • Count your shoes before the design visit
  • Measure how much long hanging you need
  • Deal with any damp walls first

Let air move through the walk-in wardrobe, particularly on a cooler external wall. Avoid packing clothes tight against the back of the units, so air can circulate.

It is useful to know what you’ll keep before we measure. The amount of long hanging, double hanging, shelving and shoe storage depends on what you own, so it’s worth having a sort-out first.

Your questions about walk-in wardrobes in North Kensington

Is parking a problem for fitting in North Kensington?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Can a walk-in wardrobe be part of a bedroom?

Yes. We design the units to make a dressing area within the bedroom, while any new walls are for your builder.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You do. The paint colour is agreed with you before anything is painted.

How is the furniture painted?

There are two ways to finish it: spray painted or hand painted. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

It is a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, and the written quote comes afterwards.

North Kensington homes and walk-in wardrobes

Homes built before 1919 make up about 53% of the housing in the area around North Kensington, with about 15% built between 1973 and 1999, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how walk-in wardrobes are fixed and fitted. Near the centre of North Kensington, Historic England’s list includes The Anglican Chapel (Grade I), under half a mile north-west, and Kensal House Day Nursery (Grade II*), less than half a mile north-east. For a listed home, internal works that affect its character can require listed building consent from the council, for example removing or fixing into original panelling. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. Red routes, run by TfL, have strict rules on stopping and loading. If your street in North Kensington joins a main road, it is worth telling us at the measuring visit. Then we can work out where to load and unload.

The wider area includes historic houses like Kensington Palace, about 1.9 miles south-east. If your own home is a period one, tall ceilings give walk-in wardrobes room to reach the cornice. If you live near Little Wormwood Scrubs, keeping walk-in wardrobes off the window wall keeps the room bright.

What happens on fitting day

On the morning of the fitting, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. Next, we carry in the sections built in our workshop. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Where a period house has been split into flats, the way in often goes through shared parts, so neighbours may appreciate a note before fitting day. The sections are sized for the narrowest point on the route. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

  1. It starts with a short note from you.
  2. At the design visit we measure the walls, floor and ceiling at several points, as few rooms are truly square.
  3. You receive a quote in writing covering the design, materials and finish.
  4. We make the walk-in wardrobe in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the units and trim the edges to meet the walls and ceiling.
  6. We check everything with you, and fresh paint should be treated gently at first.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
