Under-Stairs Storage in Notting Dale

Thinking about under-stairs storage in Notting Dale? We start with a design visit and a quote in writing.

  • A hallway crowded with coats and shoes
  • A vacuum cleaner that has nowhere to go
  • A staircase with untidy space beneath it

Under-stairs storage designed for your room

Under-stairs storage for homes in Notting Dale

In some homes the stairs rise from the living room or kitchen, so the storage beneath them is on show. That calls for clean lines, well-fitted doors and a finish that suits the rest of the room. Fronts can be plain or panelled, with handles chosen to suit the room. In Notting Dale or anywhere else, the aim is storage that looks considered, not added on. If you’re living with a dark, wasted space under the stairs and wanting a quiet corner for paperwork, that is what under-stairs cupboards are for, made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

Ceilings and floors in homes built before 1919 are rarely level, and a large share of homes around Notting Dale are that old. Each piece is scribed and levelled on site so it looks straight in a room that is not. Picture rails, skirting and cornices are worked around rather than removed.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it’s easier before the furniture is made.

What we do not do

Damp treatment and building work are for other specialists, and there are a few other limits too:

  • Any wiring or new lights, which need an electrician
  • Moving gas pipes under the stairs
  • Moving a gas or electricity meter, which is arranged through your energy supplier

If in doubt, you can drop us a line using the contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

What it is made from

  • Spray-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Pull-out drawers
  • Coat hooks and shoe shelves
  • Birch plywood
  • Hand-painted finish

What happens on fitting day

The last stage of the day is the finish. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. Hallways in period houses are often narrow, and the stairs turn sharply, so under-stairs cupboards are made in sections sized to get through. Floors and stair carpets are protected on the way in and out, and the sections are joined and scribed in the room.

  1. First we hear what’s under your stairs now and what you need, such as coats, shoes or the vacuum cleaner.
  2. We measure the space, the slope and the floor, and note any meters or fuse boards, because they must stay accessible.
  3. The design is agreed and a written quote follows.
  4. The storage is made at our workshop and painted in your colour.
  5. We fit it in your home and check every drawer and door with you.

Advice

Under-stairs storage in Notting Dale: local notes

About 58% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Notting Dale went up before 1919, and about 15% between 1973 and 1999, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how under-stairs cupboards are fixed and fitted. Near the centre of Notting Dale, Historic England’s list includes Cosmic House (Grade I), under half a mile south, and The Electric Cinema (Grade II*), less than half a mile east. If your own home is listed, internal works that affect its character, like fixing into or removing original joinery, can require listed building consent. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. Much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones run by the boroughs. In Notting Dale, a van will normally need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay, and the council arranges suspensions, often with notice. Tell us what parking is near you during the design visit.

For an older house near Church of St Sava, the triangle under an old staircase is often deeper than it looks. Living in a block of flats near Shepherds Bush station? Then it’s useful to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day. Close to Emslie Horniman's Pleasance? Under-stairs cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things.

Flats, leases and landlords

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. We choose fixings to suit the wall, after checking the walls during the design visit.

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

Tips worth knowing

The finish lasts best with a little care, whether it was spray painted or hand painted. Here are our suggestions:

  • Consider the colour of the hall, the stairs and the skirting
  • Find out what sits in the space now, from meters to pipes
  • Decide whether you’d like coats on hooks or on a rail
  • Note the things that need a home under the stairs

When we have finished fitting, the drawers and doors are ready to use. Paint needs time to cure fully, so treat the new finish gently at first. Keep tape, sharp knocks and strong cleaners away from it while it settles.

Don’t store things in front of the meter or fuse board. Readers and engineers need to reach them, and you may need to as well. With its own door, the meter stays in reach without much effort.

Questions from Notting Dale

I live in a flat in Notting Dale. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

At the design visit, we measure the way in not just the room. Under-stairs cupboards are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.

Do you make under-stairs storage for homes in Notting Dale?

Yes. We cover all of Kensington and Chelsea and the rest of London, and Notting Dale is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

It can be done with some care: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. We don’t treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.

Do photos help?

Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit, along with rough measurements. It’s useful to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

How do I get a quote for under-stairs storage in Notting Dale?

Just fill in our short enquiry form. Rough measurements and a few pictures help, and we’ll arrange a design visit, followed by a quote in writing.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Not typically. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.
