Under-stairs storage in White City, Hammersmith and Fulham
Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. Our work on under-stairs storage in White City starts with a design visit, and everything is built in our workshop.
- Nowhere to put coats, shoes and bags
- Stairs open to a room, with clutter on show
- Storage that does not match the hallway

Fitting day, step by step
Every fitting follows the same order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the space and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Clearing the room and the way in beforehand makes the day easier, including pictures on nearby walls. Floors and doorways are protected before anything comes in. Then the sections come in and are joined in place.
- You tell us about the space under the stairs.
- We come to measure and discuss the design.
- We send a written quote covering the design, materials and finish.
- The storage is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- The storage is fitted and finished, and we check each pull-out with you before we leave.
- Treat the fresh paintwork gently while it cures; a hand-painted finish is easy to touch up later.
Before we arrive
- Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
- Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
Getting a quote
If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you don’t, that is fine, and we can work it out together. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To start, send us a few details through our contact form.

Under-stairs storage for homes in White City
The space under a staircase is often the hardest-working spot in a house, and the least organised. Our under-stairs storage is planned around what you need to store, with pull-out drawers, cupboards or a combination of the two. In White City, as everywhere we work, it begins with a visit to measure and plan. If your home has an under-stairs cupboard full of clutter and a hallway crowded with coats and shoes, that is what under-stairs cupboards are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.
Wherever your home in White City sits in London’s mix of housing, there’s normally a space that could work harder. That space can take fitted storage, laid out for what you need to keep. Walls could be brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard, so we check before choosing fixings.
After the design visit, we send you a quote in writing. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish.

How it’s made
Moisture-resistant MDF
Moisture-resistant MDF is stable and takes paint well. It’s used for the doors, fronts and side panels, where a smooth, even finish matters most.
Plinths and scribe strips
Walls are rarely flat and floors rarely level, in older homes especially. We use scribe strips at the walls and a plinth at the floor to take up the difference. That keeps the lines neat all round.
Why bespoke in White City?
Standard drawer units are made in fixed sizes that rarely match the depth under the stairs. Drawers made for the space can run the full depth, so nothing is lost at the back. We size each drawer for what it will carry. Few rooms have truly flat walls and level floors, and standalone units show it with gaps and wobbles. Fitted furniture is scribed and levelled on site.
There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.
Why us?
- Fitted tight to walls that are not straight
- Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood

What we do not do
Not everything around under-stairs storage is carpentry, from an electrician to a plumber or a Gas Safe engineer. Here’s what to know:
- Relocating meters, which your energy supplier deals with
- Electrical work under the stairs, which your electrician carries out
- Gas pipework, which needs an engineer on the Gas Safe Register

Common questions about under-stairs storage
I live in a flat in White City. How will the furniture get up the stairs?
We measure the route in as well as the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Under-stairs cupboards are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.
Is parking a problem for fitting in White City?
It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the measuring visit, and we’ll plan around it.
Does fitted furniture need planning permission?
Not normally. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. Listed buildings can need listed building consent for works that affect their character, so ask the council’s conservation officer.
How do I get started?
It is easiest to use our contact form with some details about the room. After that, we arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.
How is the price worked out?
Each room is quoted on its own: the size, what goes inside, the finish and how square the room is all count. The written quote follows the design visit.
Can the fitting be on a Saturday?
Yes, Saturdays are possible by prior arrangement. Just mention it when you contact us, and we’ll see what we can do.

Pricing under-stairs storage in White City
Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. The things that affect it are:
- Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
- The finish: spray painted or hand painted
- Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
- The overall size of the piece
Rooms that are not square take more work: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. The quote allows for it.
What we need to know
Getting a few details early makes the visit more useful. If you can, send:
- Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
- Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
- Where you live, with the postcode
- Approximate measurements of the space
Getting a quote starts with a few details: the room, rough measurements and some photos if you have them. When you are ready, fill in our short enquiry form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and discuss the design, then send a quote in writing.
Under-stairs storage for homes in White City
Homes built before 1919 make up about 43% of the housing in the neighbourhood around White City, with about 18% built between 1919 and 1939, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how under-stairs cupboards are fixed and fitted. Part of White City is in a conservation area, going by Historic England’s data. Being in a conservation area mainly affects changes to the outside of a building, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. The council can confirm if you are not sure. Purpose-built flats are home to about 52% of households in the streets around White City, according to Census 2021. For a flat, under-stairs cupboards are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.
If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Building Adjoining to West of Harrow Club, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent. Close to Hammersmith Park? Living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and under-stairs cupboards can give those things a place. If your home is one of the older houses near St Michael and St George, the cupboard door under a period staircase can be kept or replaced to match the new storage.
