  • A dark, wasted space under the stairs

Under-stairs storage designed for your room

Under-stairs storage in Perivale

Every staircase has its own shape. The soffit slopes, the stringer sets its own line, and floors are often a little out of level. We scribe the storage to the stairs and the walls, so it looks as though it has always been there. It is the part of the job a boxed unit simply can’t manage. Most enquiries start with a vacuum cleaner that has nowhere to go and struggling to reach the gas or electricity meter; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

A good part of the housing around Perivale is interwar, semi-detached or detached. In a typical 1930s house, storage tends to hide in the bay, under the stairs and in the box room. Any meters or fuse board under the stairs stay accessible, and the storage is planned around them.

The furniture is made at our workshop after you’ve had the quote and decided to go ahead. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so every detail can be checked first.

What it’s made from

Moisture-resistant MDF

Because it cuts cleanly, MDF is ideal for the angled panels that follow the stairs. The moisture-resistant grade we use is stable and paints well. It is the main material for the parts you see.

Birch plywood

Drawers under the stairs often carry heavy things, from shoes to the vacuum cleaner. Birch plywood suits them, as it’s strong and holds screws well. Long shelves benefit from it too.

Why people ask for under-stairs storage in Perivale

With more people working from home, some want a desk tucked under the stairs. If the space opens onto a room, a compact desk with shelves above can sit beneath the stairs. It won’t replace a full home office, but it suits paperwork and a laptop.

These come up often when people first get in touch:

  • A staircase with untidy space beneath it
  • A tired under-stairs cupboard that stands out
  • A meter or fuse board buried behind clutter
  • No room for a small desk or a place to work

Pitzhanger Manor, about 2 miles south, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, the space under the stairs may hold the meters or the fuse board, and the cupboards are planned around them.

What to check before you book

  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
  • Whether they measure the room themselves
  • Whether the finish is set out in the quote

Storage in Perivale homes: local notes

About 77% of the homes in the area around Perivale went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 11% since 2000, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Perivale include Church of St Mary the Virgin (Grade I), about 0.5 miles south, and Perivale Underground Station (Grade II), under half a mile south-west. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for instance removing original joinery or fixing into it, may need listed building consent from the council. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. The Ultra Low Emission Zone has covered all of London since it reached the outer boroughs on 29 August 2023. Vans bringing furniture to Perivale fall under it, just as they do across the rest of London. Access and parking are talked through at the design visit.

If you live near Castle Bar Park, living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and under-stairs cupboards can give those things a place. If your home is one of the older houses near St. Mary with St. Nicholas - Perivale, under-stairs cupboards are scribed to walls and stair strings that are rarely straight.

How fitting day works

Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it’s going into, and fitting day is where that happens. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, until the line is tight. How long the fitting itself takes depends on how much storage you want under the stairs, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Clearing the room and the way in beforehand helps the day run well. Fitting day starts with protecting the floors and setting out the pieces. The pieces are levelled, fitted to the walls and fixed back.

  1. It starts when you contact us with some details about the space.
  2. At the design visit we measure under the stairs and plan the drawers and doors with you.
  3. We send a written quote setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. The drawers, doors and carcasses are made in our workshop. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We bring it to your home, fit it and leave it ready to use.

Advice

What under-stairs storage can’t fix

Not everything around under-stairs storage is carpentry, such as an electrician, a plumber or an engineer on the Gas Safe Register. Here’s what to know:

  • Plastering and decorating around the new storage
  • Moving a gas or electricity meter, which is arranged through your energy supplier
  • Gas pipework, which needs an engineer on the Gas Safe Register

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can tell us about the room on our contact form and we will give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How it works.

What goes into it

  • Spray-painted finish
  • Pull-out drawers

FAQs: under-stairs storage in Perivale

Can you fit furniture in a home close to South Greenford station?

Yes. We cover all of Ealing and the rest of London. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with a few details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

Is it possible to have a desk built under the stairs?

Often, yes, where the space opens onto a room and there’s enough height at one end. We can build a desk with shelves and drawers to suit the space. New sockets or lights are for your electrician, and we leave a route for the cables.

What materials do you use for under-stairs storage?

Our storage is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then painted. Drawer boxes are birch plywood, as it is strong and holds screws firmly. The materials and finish are agreed in your quote.

My walls aren’t straight. Is that a problem?

Uneven walls are normal in older London homes, and the furniture is made to deal with them. Edges are scribed to the wall, and adjustable feet or a plinth bring the furniture up to level.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, Saturdays are possible by prior arrangement. Let us know when you first get in touch.

Why bespoke in Perivale?

Ready-made units are designed for shipping and quick assembly. Bespoke storage is designed for one space and built to suit it, using birch plywood for strong drawer boxes and moisture-resistant MDF for painted fronts. The right choice depends on how hard you want the space to work. Ready-made units come in standard depths that rarely suit every space, which may be too deep for one spot and too shallow for another. With fitted furniture, the depth is chosen for the room.

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. We will talk through what you need inside at the measuring visit.
