Built-in bookshelves in North Wembley

About our built-in bookshelves in North Wembley

Shelving can frame a door or a window. A bookcase can wrap around a door, with shelves running over the top. It uses wall space that often goes to waste. We make built-in bookshelves from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about storage for children’s books and games and shelving that works with picture rails and cornices.

Around North Wembley, with interwar houses or semis making up much of the housing, the living room may be a good size but with fewer recesses than a Victorian house. Built-in bookshelves can fill the alcoves, run the length of a wall or frame the chimney breast. The carcasses are made from moisture-resistant MDF or birch plywood, painted in a colour agreed with you.

A quote in writing follows the design visit. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish.

Fitting day, step by step

With the carcasses fixed and level, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly, then checked again. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the bookcase and the walls it’s fitted to, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Fitting day means carrying in the sections, joining them and fitting them to the walls. Spray-painted pieces come finished from the workshop, while hand painting can happen on site. Saturdays can be arranged.

Starting with a design visit

The design visit is where every quote starts. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. Afterwards, we send a written quote, so you can take your time with it. To arrange the visit, use our contact form.

Advice

How it’s made

Hand-painted finish

A hand-painted finish can be done on site once the bookcase is fitted. Small marks on it are simple to touch up.

Plinths and scribe strips

A plinth lifts the bookcase and takes up an uneven floor. It can line up with the skirting.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

It is worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture normally costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

Why people ask for built-in bookshelves in North Wembley

Some people are tired of shelves that bow and bookcases that lean. Bowing is a sign the shelves are too long or too thin for the load. Bespoke shelves are sized for the span and the weight.

People usually get in touch with us about needs like these:

  • A room lined with books
  • Space for art books and records
  • Somewhere to keep toys and books tidy
  • Shelving that works with picture rails and cornices

Northolt Manor, about 2.9 miles west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, picture rails and cornices give built-in bookshelves a line to finish at.

What to check before you book

  • Will the doors close with even gaps?
  • A quote in writing that sets out the job
  • How they deal with uneven walls and floors
  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done

Honest limits

As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. These are worth knowing before you plan:

  • Moving sockets or switches, which needs an electrician
  • Relocating radiators or pipework
  • Repairing loose plaster or weak walls before fitting

Not sure whether your space suits built-in bookshelves? You can send us a few details through our contact form and we’ll tell you before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

Living-room carpentry in North Wembley: local notes

Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 39% of the housing in the area around North Wembley, with about 22% built since 2000, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. There are 5 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of North Wembley. Being near listed buildings does not make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. London’s red routes are run by TfL, and stopping on them is tightly controlled. Where a home in North Wembley is on or beside a main road, it is useful to mention that during the design visit. That way we can plan where to load and unload.

If your children go to Park Lane Primary School or a school nearby, shelving with deep cupboards below keeps books, games and school things in one place. If you live near Preston Park, shelving that stops short of the window keeps the view of the green.

Common questions about built-in bookshelves

Is North Wembley in the area you cover for built-in bookshelves?

Yes. North Wembley is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Brent and London. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with some details.

I live near Wembley Central station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Brent and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Can I send photos before the visit?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot. You can send them when you get in touch through our contact form.

How is the price worked out?

Size, doors and drawers, what goes inside and the finish all affect it, along with access and parking. The price comes in a quote in writing after the design visit.

Do you do the electrics?

No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.

Can my walls take a full bookcase?

We check how the wall is built at the design visit. Fixings are chosen to suit solid brick, lath and plaster or a stud wall, and heavy loads are fixed into sound structure. If the plaster is loose or the wall is weak, it should be put right first.
