Under-Stairs Storage in Oakwood

Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. We make under-stairs storage for homes in Oakwood, each designed at a visit to your home.

  • A fuse board that’s hard to get to
  • A low corner too deep to reach into
  • Wanting a quiet corner for paperwork

Under-stairs storage designed for your room

Under-stairs storage in Oakwood: what you get

When the hall is tight, the space under the stairs is often the only place left for coats, shoes and bags. We can make a coat section with a rail or hooks, shoe drawers and a small shelf for keys and post. Painted in a colour you choose, it reads as part of the house rather than a piece of furniture. For a home in Oakwood, it can make the front door feel far calmer. Typical reasons to get in touch are needing a compact spot for a laptop and nowhere to put coats, shoes and bags, and the answer is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

Around Oakwood, with interwar houses or semis making up much of the housing, the hall is often wide enough for coat and shoe storage. Bays at the front suit a seat with storage below, with a grille so any radiator below keeps heating the room. Each space is measured and under-stairs cupboards are made to suit it.

Once you have read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made in our workshop. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so every detail can be checked first.

Oakwood homes and under-stairs storage

In the area around Oakwood, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 44%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 22%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Oakwood include Oakwood Underground Station (Grade II*), under half a mile north-west, and Station Sign to North of Oakwood Station (Grade II), under half a mile north-west. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, can require listed building consent. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. Controlled parking zones are run by the boroughs, so the rules in Enfield are set locally. If your road in Oakwood falls in a zone, the van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know about parking at the design visit.

If your children go to Wolfson Hillel Primary School or a school nearby, deep drawers suit the bulky things families collect, from scooters to swimming kit. If you live in a period home close to St Thomas's Church, the triangle under an old staircase is often deeper than it looks.

Oakwood is about 3 miles south-east of Edmonton, part of the London Borough of Enfield. Whether your home in Oakwood is a terraced house, a flat or a newer build, we measure the room as it is and design around it. Our Enfield coverage includes Oakwood, along with the rest of the borough.

We also cover World's End (1 mile east), Osidge (1 mile south-west), Southgate (1 mile south), Grange Park (1 mile east) and East Barnet (1 mile south-west). Elsewhere in Enfield, we also cover Edmonton (3 miles south-east), Enfield (2 miles east), Palmers Green (2 miles south-east), New Southgate (2 miles south), Enfield Chase (2 miles north-east) and Bush Hill Park (2 miles east).

Do you need under-stairs storage in Oakwood?

After a hallway is redecorated, an old, tired cupboard under the stairs can stand out. Storage made for the space and painted to suit the hall finishes the job. Decorating is for your decorator, so it helps to tell us your plans early.

Requests we hear often include:

  • A hallway crowded with coats and shoes
  • The low end of the space going to waste
  • Nowhere to keep the vacuum and ironing board
  • Needing a compact spot for a laptop

Close to Oakwood Park? Living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and under-stairs cupboards can give those things a place.

How to choose a carpenter in London

How fitting day works

The last stage of the day is the finish. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. If you have a driveway, it can make unloading simpler, so it’s worth mentioning at the design visit. Otherwise, details of permits or nearby bays help. Floors and doorways are protected while the pieces come in.

  1. You contact us about the space under your stairs.
  2. At the design visit we measure the underside of the stairs and the floor, then talk through drawers, cupboards and coat storage.
  3. We send a quote in writing for the storage.
  4. In our workshop we build every part from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, following the slope we measured.
  5. On fitting day the units are set level and scribed to follow the stairs and walls. The finish is sprayed in the workshop or painted by hand once it’s in.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand

Questions we are often asked

Can you make under-stairs storage for a home in Oakwood?

Yes. Oakwood is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Enfield and London. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with some details.

Does a conservation area in or near Oakwood affect fitted furniture?

Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

What is under-stairs storage made from?

We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. The doors and fronts are MDF, which is stable and paints well, and birch plywood is strong, so it suits drawer boxes and carcasses. Everything is finished by spray painting or hand painting.

Should I choose drawers or cupboards under the stairs?

Many designs use both. Deep pull-out drawers suit the shallow end under the bottom steps, while a cupboard at the tall end takes coats, the vacuum or an ironing board. We’ll suggest a layout when we visit.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, by arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you get in touch.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

It can be done with some care: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. We do not treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.

Honest limits

It is worth being clear about where our work stops:

  • Plastering and decorating around the new storage
  • Moving gas pipes under the stairs
  • New sockets, lights or wiring, which are for your electrician

Not sure whether your space suits under-stairs storage? You can send us a few details through our contact form and we will tell you. How a job runs, step by step.

Materials and parts

  • Pull-out drawers
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Coat hooks and shoe shelves
  • Birch plywood
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Hand-painted finish

Before and after fitting day

Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so go gently with it for a while. After that, a few simple habits help:

  • Let us know about parking near your home
  • Check whether your meters or fuse board are under the stairs
  • Bring paint colours you like to the design visit
  • Empty the cupboard so we can measure every corner

A soft, damp cloth is the best way to keep the fronts clean. Dry them afterwards, and avoid abrasive pads and strong solvents. Handles and the edges of drawers are touched most, so give them a wipe now and then.

Keep the way to the meter or fuse board clear. Readers and engineers need to reach them, and you may need to as well. A dedicated door makes this easy to keep up.

What it is made from

Hand-painted finish

Some people prefer a hand-painted finish for its softer look. It can be applied on site, in a colour agreed with you. Touch-ups are simple if the paint is ever knocked.

Birch plywood

Its layered build gives birch plywood its strength. We use it for carcasses, shelves and drawer boxes, and its edge can be left visible or painted to match.
