TV and media units for your home in Oakwood

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

How we make TV and media units for Oakwood

A built-in TV wall often needs sockets in new places, such as behind the screen or in the equipment cupboard. That’s work for your electrician, and some electrical work in homes falls under Part P of the Building Regulations. It’s best done before we fit. Typical reasons to get in touch are set-top boxes stacked on a stand and wasted space around the screen; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

With interwar houses or semis a big part of the picture around Oakwood, many living rooms have been opened up to the dining room behind. The result is often a long room with a chimney breast, a good spot for TV and media units. Cable routes for a TV or speakers, and space for set-top boxes, are planned at the measuring visit.

The furniture is made at our workshop after you’ve had the quote and decided to go ahead. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so every detail can be checked first.

How fitting day works

Finishing comes last. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; hand painting, if that’s what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. Some interwar and suburban streets have driveways, which can make unloading easier, so it’s worth mentioning at the measuring visit. Otherwise, details of permits or nearby bays help. Doorways, stairs and floors are covered on the way in.

  1. You send us a note about the room and the unit you’d like.
  2. We visit to measure and talk through the design and how the unit should look in the room.
  3. A written quote follows, with the finish set out.
  4. We build the unit in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood; a spray-painted finish is applied there for a smooth, even surface.
  5. We fit it in your home; a hand-painted finish is applied once it’s in and is easy to touch up later. Go gently with new paintwork while it cures.

Starting with a design visit

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. The design is talked through at the visit, once we have measured, and the written quote then sets it out. To start, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Advice

Flats, blocks and rented homes

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, as it makes good use of an tricky room. It’s made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, finished by spray or by hand.

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations, which is worth sorting early. We can’t advise on your lease, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.

Questions we’re often asked

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Oakwood?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.

Can you make TV and media units for a home in Oakwood?

Yes, Oakwood is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Enfield and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and discuss the design, and then we send a quote.

Is there room for a soundbar?

We plan open spaces for speakers and soundbars. Closed doors muffle sound.

Can the TV unit fit a bigger TV later?

We can size the opening for the screen you might buy next. Tell us the size you have in mind.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps to avoid condensation. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, by arrangement. Tell us when you get in touch if a Saturday suits you best.

Do you need TV and media units in Oakwood?

In an open-plan space, the TV wall is on show from everywhere. Built-in furniture makes that wall look planned and adds storage for the rest of the room.

Common reasons to get in touch include:

  • A big screen that dominates the wall
  • Wasted space around the screen
  • Boxes with no ventilation
  • Speakers muffled behind doors

If your children go to Wolfson Hillel Primary School or a school nearby, low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room.

Built-in living-room furniture in Oakwood

Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 44% of the housing in the streets around Oakwood, with about 22% built between 1945 and 1972, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. That matters for TV and media units, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Oakwood include Oakwood Underground Station (Grade II*), under half a mile north-west, and Station Sign to North of Oakwood Station (Grade II), under half a mile north-west. If your own home is listed, changes inside that alter its character, such as fixing into or removing original joinery, can require listed building consent. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. Parking controls in London are set borough by borough, so Enfield has its own. Depending on your street in Oakwood, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a council bay suspension may be needed. It’s useful to tell us about parking during the design visit.

If your home is one of the older houses near St Thomas's Church, walls that bow and floors that slope are why TV and media units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. Close to Oakwood Park? TV and media units can be planned to frame a window with a view rather than block it.

What it costs

Prices vary from room to room, for these reasons:

  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • The width and height of the space
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. A larger piece means more material and more time, so size comes first. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

Before the design visit

When you contact us, these help most:

  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • Examples of the look you’re after
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling

A quote begins with a few details from you: the room, rough sizes and some pictures if you have them. To send them, use our contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and go through the design, then send a quote in writing.
