Built-in bookshelves designed for your room
Built-in bookshelves in Oakwood
Books weigh a lot, and a wall of them puts real load on the fixings. Each bookcase is fixed with fixings chosen for the wall. If a wall is weak or the plaster is loose, it is best put right before fitting. People usually come to us about a room lined with books and alcoves beside the chimney breast going to waste, and the answer is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.
Plenty of semis and interwar houses have been extended at the back or had the back rooms knocked through, which matters around Oakwood, where homes like these are a big part of the housing. A long through room gives built-in bookshelves a whole wall to work with. An extension’s plasterboard walls need different fixings from the original brick or block.
You get the quote in writing, so you can read it at your own pace and share it with anyone else involved. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

What affects the price in Oakwood
To work out the quote, we look at:
- Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
- Doors and drawers, and how many
- Spray painting or hand painting
- Parking near your home
Rooms that aren’t square take more work: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. The quote allows for it, which we write after seeing the room.
Helping us understand the room
Ahead of the design visit, we’ll normally ask about:
- Any ideas or images you have saved
- A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
- Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
- Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
We quote once we’ve seen the room. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and discuss the design with you, and the written quote comes after. The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. To arrange a visit, drop us a line using the contact form.
Common questions about built-in bookshelves
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Oakwood?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to let us know about parking during the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.
Can you make built-in bookshelves for a home in Oakwood?
Yes, Oakwood is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Enfield and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.
Can you add sockets inside the units?
No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.
Do I need the building owner’s consent?
Possibly. Leases vary, and some require the building owner’s consent for alterations. Your lease is something we can’t advise on.
What affects the price of built-in bookshelves?
Every job is priced for its room: size, internal fittings, the finish and how tricky the walls are all play a part. The written quote follows the design visit.
Who chooses the colour?
You choose it. Whichever finish you pick, it’s in the colour you’ve chosen.
Built-in bookshelves in Oakwood: local notes
About 44% of the homes in the streets around Oakwood went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 22% between 1945 and 1972, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. That matters for built-in bookshelves, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Part of Oakwood is in a conservation area, going by Historic England’s data. Being in a conservation area mainly affects changes to the outside of a building, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. Detached and semi-detached houses are home to about 47% of households in the streets around Oakwood, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. A house like that normally has more rooms to plan around than a flat, and sometimes a driveway that makes unloading easier.
If your children go to Wolfson Hillel Primary School or a school nearby, shelving with deep cupboards below keeps books, games and school things in one place. For a flat near Winchmore Hill station, built-in bookshelves are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. If your home is one of the older houses near St Thomas's Church, walls that bow and floors that slope are why built-in bookshelves are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.

Looking after your furniture
New paint needs time to cure fully, so go gently with it for a while. Beyond that, these tips help:
- Plan any sockets or wiring with your electrician before fitting
- Tell us where the heaviest things will go
- Note the sizes of your largest books and records
- Consider deeper cupboards at the bottom
Keep a record of the colour. Small marks on a hand-painted finish are simple to touch up.
Don’t load shelves beyond what they were planned for. Mention any heavy collection you plan to add when we design the shelves, so we can allow for it.
Honest limits
Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work are not part of what we do. There are a few other points to bear in mind:
- Making new openings, removing walls or other structural work
- Painting walls and ceilings around the shelving
- Moving sockets or switches, which needs an electrician
If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can get in touch through our contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer. How it works.

From workshop to your room
On the morning of the fitting, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. The sections made in our workshop come in next. How long fitting takes depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. A front path or side gate can make the carry from the van simpler. We measure the path, any steps and the front door as part of the route. Floors, stairs and doorways are protected on the way in.

Advice
Flats, conversions and leaseholders
Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. If there is a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Let us know about it when you contact us.
If the property is let, we will need access agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. An agent can arrange access for you.
