Window seats for your home in Oakwood

Window seats in Oakwood

We make the seat itself, and you can source a cushion to the size we give you. That leaves the choice of fabric and style to you. We make the seat to suit the cushion you plan, with a suitable depth and height. If you’re living with nowhere to keep blankets, toys or books and a radiator under the window getting in the way, that is what window seats are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

An interwar house tends to have truer walls than a Victorian one, though rarely square corners. Around Oakwood, interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a big part of the housing, so we still scribe every piece to the wall. Each piece is levelled on site, so doors, lids and drawers line up.

If the job needs another trade, like an electrician or a plumber, we’ll tell you. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

What window seats can’t fix

Not everything around window seats is carpentry, from an electrician to a plumber or a Gas Safe registered engineer. Here’s what to know:

  • Repairs to sash windows, cills or shutters
  • Moving or replacing a radiator, which is for your plumber
  • Making the seat cushion, which isn’t our work

Not sure whether your space suits window seats? You can tell us about the room on our contact form and we will tell you before you arrange a visit. How it works.

What goes into it

  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Radiator grilles
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Lift-up lids or drawers
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Birch plywood

What happens on fitting day

At the end, we tidy up. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you and explain how to look after the paint. The time the fitting takes depends on the shape of the bay or recess and what goes under the seat, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. It’s useful to clear the room and the route before we arrive. Fitting day starts with protecting the floors and setting out the pieces. Each piece is levelled, scribed where the wall wanders and fixed to suit the wall.

  1. You get in touch about a window seat.
  2. At the design visit we agree the seat and talk about colour, with a choice of spray painting or hand painting.
  3. A quote in writing follows, with the finish written in.
  4. The seat is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood; a spray-painted finish is done there for a smooth, even surface.
  5. We fit it in your home, and a hand-painted finish is applied in the room.
  6. Fresh paint takes a while to cure, so go gently with the seat and lids at first.

Preparing the room

  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way

How to get a quote

Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space, particularly with rough measurements. To send them over, tell us about the room on our contact form, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Tell us about them at the measuring visit, so fitting day is planned around them.

If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations, and that is best sorted before fitting day. We cannot give advice on leases, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.

Is it time for window seats?

Storage is another big reason. A seat with a lift-up lid or drawers can hold toys, blankets, books or games. It adds storage in a space you are not otherwise using.

People normally get in touch with us about things like these:

  • A room with shutters and sashes that deserves a proper seat
  • Unused space below a sash window
  • Wanting a quiet place to read
  • A radiator that makes the space hard to use

If you live near Oakwood Park, living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and window seats can give those things a place.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Whether they measure the room themselves
  • Whether the route into your home has been checked
  • Is it spray painted or hand painted?
  • How the doors are hung and adjusted

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

Cost matters, and it is fair to say so: off-the-shelf furniture normally costs less up front. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is tricky, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

Common questions about window seats

Can you make window seats for a home in Oakwood?

Yes. Oakwood is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Enfield and London. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Winchmore Hill station?

Yes, homes across Enfield and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with some details about the room.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, by prior arrangement. Let us know when you get in touch if a Saturday suits you best.

Which is better under a window seat, a lid or drawers?

The answer depends on what goes under the seat. A lift-up lid opens the full depth, which suits bulky things you don’t need every day, while drawers mean you don’t have to move the cushion.

How long does it take to fit a window seat?

How long fitting takes depends on the shape of the bay or recess and what goes under the seat, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Every part is made in our workshop before we arrive. If you’d like the fitting on a Saturday, that can be arranged.

What if my walls and floors are out of level?

Walls and floors that are not true are part of the job in older homes. The furniture is scribed to follow the walls and levelled on feet or a plinth, so it sits tight to the room.

Window seats for homes in Oakwood

Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 44% of the housing in the area around Oakwood, with about 22% built between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. Red routes, run by TfL, have strict rules on stopping and loading. If your home in Oakwood is on or near a main road, tell us at the design visit. We will plan where the van can stop.

For a family home near Wolfson Hillel Primary School, window seats can be planned around what a family needs to keep, from coats and bags to sports kit. If you live in a period home close to St Thomas's Church, the deep reveals of an older window can frame a seat neatly.
