Preston Under-Stairs Storage

Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. We make under-stairs storage for homes in Preston, each designed at a visit to your home.

  • No room for a small desk or a place to work
  • A staircase with untidy space beneath it
  • Cleaning things with no proper home

Under-stairs storage for homes in Preston

Where the space under the stairs opens onto a room, a compact desk can fit beneath it. We can build a desk with shelves above and a drawer or two below. Any new socket or light there is for your electrician, and we leave room and a route for the cable. It is worth talking through at the measuring visit in Preston. People usually come to us about wanting a quiet corner for paperwork and storage that doesn’t match the hallway; the furniture is made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

With interwar houses or semis a big part of the picture around Preston, many have had the loft converted, leaving low eaves and sloping ceilings. Fitted storage can make use of the eaves, the bay or the hall. For lofts, we work in spaces that are already converted or boarded.

A written quote follows the design visit. It sets out the design we have talked through, the materials and the finish, so it is clear what’s included.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Standard storage is built for a level floor and a square space, and the space under a staircase is neither. A ready-made unit tends to leave gaps at the slope and wasted space at the back. Bespoke storage is designed and cut to the shape of your stairs. It costs more than something off the shelf, and what you gain is the space a standard unit can’t reach. Even in a 1930s house, walls and floors are not perfectly true, and standalone units can lean or gap. Fitted furniture is scribed and levelled on site.

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections. The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose.

Under-stairs storage for homes in Preston

The biggest shares of homes in the area around Preston were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 55%) and since 2000 (about 18%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Preston include Church of the Ascension (Grade II), less than half a mile east, and Windermere Public House (Grade II), about 0.6 miles west. If your own home is listed, changes inside that alter its character, such as fixing into or removing original joinery, can need listed building consent. It is worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. About 53% of households in the streets around Preston live in detached or semi-detached houses, based on Census 2021. A house like that typically has more rooms to plan around than a flat, and sometimes a driveway that makes unloading easier.

For families living near Preston Park Primary School, deep drawers suit the bulky things families collect, from scooters to swimming kit. If you live in a flat close to South Kenton station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in. If you live near Preston Park, living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and under-stairs cupboards can give those things a place.

Preston is part of the London Borough of Brent, about 5 miles south-east of Kilburn. Our work covers every London borough and the City of London, Preston included. We cover places right across Brent, from the busiest high streets to quiet residential roads.

Every address in HA9, HA3 and HA0 is within our area for under-stairs storage. What it is made from

Plinths and scribe strips

The floor under a staircase is rarely perfectly level. A plinth or adjustable feet let us set the storage level, so the doors and drawers run true.

Spray-painted finish

A spray-painted finish is smooth and even, almost like a factory finish. It is done in our workshop, before the storage comes to your home. The colour is agreed with you.

Common questions about under-stairs storage

Will a conservation area stop me having under-stairs storage fitted in Preston?

Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Preston?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.

Can you match the storage to my hallway?

Yes. The storage is spray-painted or hand-painted in a colour agreed with you. It can match the walls, the stairs or the woodwork, so it sits quietly in the hall.

Do you make the furniture yourselves?

Each piece is made in our workshop for the room it is going into, then fitted in your home. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.

My walls are not straight. Is that a problem?

Uneven walls are normal in older London homes, and the furniture is made to deal with them. Edges are scribed to the wall, and adjustable feet or a plinth bring the furniture up to level.

How long does it take to fit under-stairs storage?

The time the fitting takes depends on how much storage you want under the stairs, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. The storage is made in our workshop first, so the time in your home is spent fitting. We know the hall is a busy route, so we keep it as clear as possible.

Fitting day, step by step

On the morning of the fitting, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. Next, we carry in the sections built in our workshop. The time the fitting takes depends on how much storage you want under the stairs, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Fitting day means carrying in the sections, joining them and fitting them to the walls. Hand-painted furniture can be finished on site; spray-painted pieces arrive finished from the workshop. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

Pricing under-stairs storage in Preston

A few things affect what fitted furniture costs:

  • Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls
  • Parking near your home
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • Doors and drawers, and how many

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

Getting in touch

To help us picture the room, please include:

  • How you want to use the space
  • Examples of the look you’re after
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • Approximate measurements of the space

Rough measurements are fine at the start. We measure everything properly during the design visit. To arrange it, fill in our short enquiry form and tell us about the room. The written quote follows the visit.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder.

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot usually do that in an older room.
