Under-stairs storage for homes in Queensbury

Deep pull-out drawers bring the back of the space within reach. Instead of crawling in to find something, you slide the drawer out and everything is in view. Cupboards suit the taller end, where coats can hang and a vacuum cleaner can stand. A mix of drawers and cupboards is often the best use of the space. People typically come to us about stairs open to a room, with clutter on show and a dark, wasted space under the stairs; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

In a family house, the hall and stairs usually carry the most clutter. Around Queensbury, where interwar homes, semis and detached houses make up a big part of the housing, well-planned storage by the door or under the stairs can take a lot of it. Meters and fuse boards stay easy to reach.

Common questions about under-stairs storage

Will a conservation area stop me having under-stairs storage fitted in Queensbury?

Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Do you cover homes near Kenton station?

Yes, homes across Harrow and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with some details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

What if my walls and floors are out of level?

It is something we deal with all the time. The furniture is scribed to follow the walls and levelled on feet or a plinth.

Should I choose drawers or cupboards under the stairs?

It depends on the shape of the space and what you want to store. Drawers make the low end useful, because you pull the back of the space to you. At the tall end, a cupboard is often better for coats and the vacuum.

Can you build storage around a gas meter or fuse board?

Yes. Meters and fuse boards often sit under the stairs, and they need to stay accessible. At the design visit we measure around them and leave a clear way in. Moving a meter isn’t our work, so we design for where it is now.

How much does under-stairs storage cost?

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. It comes down to the size of the space, how many drawers and doors you want, and the finish. To get a quote, fill in our short enquiry form and we’ll arrange a design visit.

What happens on fitting day

You’re welcome to ask questions while we work. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully and leaving everything tidy. How long fitting takes depends on how much storage you want under the stairs, and your quote sets out the fitting days. In a 1920s or 1930s house, the hall and stairs are usually straightforward, but the route in is still measured, not just the room. Under-stairs cupboards arrive in sections and are assembled in place, with floors protected throughout.

  1. You get in touch and tell us a little about the space under your stairs, and whether the meters or fuse board are in there.
  2. At the design visit we measure under the stairs and plan the drawers and doors with you, keeping the meters and fuse board easy to reach.
  3. You receive a written quote for the storage we’ve discussed, for you to read through.
  4. We make every part in our workshop, shaped to the angle of your stairs. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The storage is fitted in your home and checked, drawer by drawer.

Before we arrive

  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through

Making use of tricky spaces in Queensbury

In the neighbourhood around Queensbury, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 80%) and the years since 2000 (about 8%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Queensbury is partly covered by a conservation area, going by Historic England’s data. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission in a conservation area, as the controls are mainly about the outside of buildings. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. Controlled parking zones are common across London, and Harrow sets its own rules. Where a street in Queensbury is controlled, a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension from the council. Tell us what the parking is like during the design visit.

If your home is one of the older houses near All Saints Church, the triangle under an old staircase is often deeper than it looks. If you live near Roe Green Park, living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and under-stairs cupboards can give those things a place. The wider area includes historic houses like Headstone Manor, about 2.7 miles west. If your own home is a period one, the space under the stairs may hold the meters or the fuse board, and the cupboards are planned around them.

Where other trades come in

We do not treat damp or carry out building work, and there are a few other limits too:

  • New sockets, lights or wiring, which are for your electrician
  • Plastering and decorating around the new storage
  • Moving a gas or electricity meter, which is arranged through your energy supplier

Not sure whether your space suits under-stairs storage? You can message us from the contact page and we will tell you. How a job runs, step by step.

Materials and parts

  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Pull-out drawers
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Birch plywood
  • Coat hooks and shoe shelves

Practical tips

Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it is worth looking after. Here are a few tips worth knowing:

  • Measure your vacuum cleaner and ironing board
  • Mention any parking rules on your street
  • Note the things that need a home under the stairs
  • Mention any decorating plans so the work can be timed well

When you load the drawers, put the heaviest things low and towards the front. It helps the runners and keeps the storage working well. We size the shelves for what you said you’d store, so it’s worth keeping to that plan.

Wet coats and shoes can mark paint and leave damp in a closed cupboard. It’s best to let them dry before closing the door on them, and air the cupboard if it feels damp.

Flats, leases and landlords

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, often to make the most of a small or tricky room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray or hand-painted finish.

A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind.

Materials and finishes

Hand-painted finish

Hand painting gives a slightly softer look than spraying. It can be applied on site, in a colour agreed with you. If it is ever chipped, it can be touched up.

Pull-out drawers

A tall pull-out drawer can hold coats on a rail or a vacuum cleaner standing up. Shorter drawers lower down suit shoes and bags. The design visit is where we agree the mix.
