Loft storage for your home in Preston

How we make loft storage for Preston

Getting furniture up to a loft room is part of the planning. At the design visit, we measure the stairs and landings as well as the loft, so every section made at our workshop fits up the stairs. It’s a step that matters for any loft in Preston. We make eaves cupboards from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are ready-made wardrobes too big for the stairs and boxes piled on loft boards.

With interwar houses or semis a big part of the picture around Preston, loft conversions are common, and they leave low eaves and sloping ceilings. Those spaces, along with bays and hallways, are where fitted storage can add the most. For lofts, we work in spaces that are already converted or boarded.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. The finish is stated too, whether that is spray painting or hand painting.

What happens on fitting day

However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and that happens on fitting day. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, until the line is tight. How long the fitting itself takes depends on how much storage you want in the loft, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. In a 1930s house with a converted loft, the stairs to the loft room are often steeper than the main flight, so pieces for a loft room are sized for the narrowest point. Elsewhere in the house, the route is typically more generous. Each section is assembled and fixed in the room.

  1. It starts when you contact us about storage in your loft.
  2. At the design visit, we look at the slopes, the eaves and the way up.
  3. A written quote follows, with the fitting days agreed. You can ask us about any of it.
  4. Your storage is made at our workshop, shaped to the loft.
  5. The storage is fitted and set level, ready to fill, with the doors and drawers checked with you.

Advice

Making use of awkward spaces in Preston

Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 55% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Preston, with about 18% built since 2000, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. That matters for eaves cupboards, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Preston is partly covered by a conservation area, according to Historic England’s records. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If you’re unsure, check with the council before work starts. More than half of the homes in the streets around Preston (about 55%) date from between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Loft conversions are common in houses of that age, and the eaves can take fitted storage; we build the storage once the loft is converted or boarded.

Close to Preston Park? Eaves cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things. If your home is one of the older houses near Church of the Ascension, sloping ceilings in a loft room suit wardrobes cut to the angle. For families living near Preston Park Primary School, eaves cupboards can be planned around what a family needs to keep, from coats and bags to sports kit.

Why bespoke in Preston?

Ready-made wardrobes and cupboards are built for standard rooms. Under a slope, it leaves large gaps and wasted space. Storage made for the loft follows its shape. It costs more than off-the-shelf furniture, and what you gain is the space a standard piece can’t reach. Ready-made furniture rarely suits a bay, a box room or a bulkhead over the stairs, and interwar homes often have all three. Fitted furniture is made around them.

Parking is part of the price picture in London. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay near your home. Tell us about parking at the measuring visit.

Your questions about loft storage in Preston

Will a conservation area stop me having loft storage fitted in Preston?

Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Preston?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It’s useful to let us know about parking at the design visit.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture, which helps avoid condensation and mould. If there is damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.

Do photos help?

Yes, they help. Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space. You can send them when you drop us a line using the contact form.

Do you cover Preston?

Yes. We cover Preston and the rest of Brent. To get a quote, send us a few details through our contact form.

Do you make the furniture yourselves?

Each piece is built in our workshop for the room it is going into, then brought to your home and fitted. It is built from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too. It is made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, with a spray or hand-painted finish.

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it, after measuring the route during the design visit.

Materials and finishes

Pull-out drawers

Drawers that pull out make the eaves easy to use. You see everything at once. We plan them around any access the eaves need.

Hand-painted finish

A hand-painted finish can be done in your home after fitting. Small marks are simple to touch in later. That helps in a well-used bedroom.
