Eastcote Under-Stairs Storage

In Eastcote, we design under-stairs storage around the room you actually have. Your under-stairs cupboard is designed at a visit to your home and made at our workshop.

  • Stairs open to a room, with clutter on show
  • A vacuum cleaner that has nowhere to go
  • Nowhere to put coats, shoes and bags

Under-stairs storage for your home in Eastcote

About our under-stairs storage in Eastcote

Under the stairs is where so much ends up, from coats and shoes to the vacuum cleaner. Our under-stairs storage is planned around what you need to store, whether that is pull-out drawers, a run of cupboards or a mix of both. For a home in Eastcote, it starts with a design visit to measure the space and talk it through. If your home has a sloping corner nobody can reach and needing a compact spot for a laptop, under-stairs cupboards made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.

With interwar houses or semis a big part of the picture around Eastcote, loft conversions are common, and they leave low eaves and sloping ceilings. Fitted storage can make use of the eaves, the bay or the hall. For lofts, we work in spaces that are already converted or boarded.

A written quote is the clearest record of what we have agreed. It sets out the under-stairs cupboard designed for your room, its materials and its finish, and it is what the workshop builds to.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t usually do that in an older room.

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can use the full height and width.

FAQs: under-stairs storage in Eastcote

Does a conservation area in or near Eastcote affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Eastcote?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.

Can you fit a small desk under the stairs?

It depends on the height and how open the space is. At the design visit we will say whether a desk makes sense there. Where it works, it makes a neat spot for a laptop and paperwork.

How long does it take to fit under-stairs storage?

The time the fitting takes depends on how much storage you want under the stairs, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Drawers, doors and carcasses are all made in the workshop before we arrive. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

How much does under-stairs storage cost?

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. It comes down to the size of the space, how many drawers and doors you want, and the finish. For a quote, message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit.

Can you make under-stairs storage for a home in Eastcote?

Yes. We work in Eastcote and across Harrow.

How fitting works for under-stairs storage

Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site, so it sits neatly against the room. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the space and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. In a 1930s house with a converted loft, the stairs to the loft room are often steeper than the main flight, so any section going up there is sized for them. Elsewhere in the house, the route is typically more generous. The pieces are joined and fixed once in place.

  1. You let us know about the stairs and what you’d like to store.
  2. We measure the space, the slope and the floor, and note any meters or fuse boards, because they must stay accessible.
  3. The design is agreed and a quote in writing follows, with the finish set out.
  4. The storage is made at our workshop and painted in your colour. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home and check every drawer and door with you.

Before fitting day

  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway

How to get a quote

The quote is built from the design visit. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and discuss the design with you. Afterwards, we send a written quote for you to look over. To book one, use our contact form.

Tips worth knowing

Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so treat it gently at first. Beyond that, these tips help:

  • Clear the space before the design visit if you can
  • Check whether your meters or fuse board are under the stairs
  • Let us know about anything bulky that needs to fit
  • Mention any parking rules on your street

A soft, damp cloth is the best way to keep the fronts clean. Dry them afterwards, and avoid abrasive pads and strong solvents. The edges of drawers and the areas around handles pick up marks first.

Keep the way to the meter or fuse board clear. Readers and engineers need to reach them, and you may need to as well. With its own door, the meter stays in reach without much effort.

Where other trades come in

Damp treatment and building work are for other specialists, so these points are worth knowing:

  • Altering or cutting into the stairs
  • Making good the walls and ceiling, which is for a plasterer or decorator
  • New sockets, lights or wiring, which are for your electrician

Not sure whether your space suits under-stairs storage? You can message us from the contact page and we will tell you. How it works.

Eastcote homes and under-stairs storage

Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 55% of the housing in the area around Eastcote, with about 24% built between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Near the centre of Eastcote, Historic England’s list includes Cheney Farmhouse (Grade II), under half a mile north-west, and Field End Lodge (Grade II), about 0.5 miles west. For a listed home, internal works that affect its character may need listed building consent from the council, for example removing or fixing into original panelling. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. More than half of the homes in the area around Eastcote (about 55%) date from between 1919 and 1939, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. In many interwar houses the space under the stairs holds the meters or the fuse board, which must stay accessible.

Doors and drawer fronts

A door for the meter or fuse board can match the rest of the fronts. It opens fully so the meter stays easy to read. The rest of the fronts can be doors, drawers or both.

Birch plywood

Birch plywood is made in layers, which makes it strong and stable. It goes into the carcasses, the shelves and the drawer boxes, with the edge either shown or painted.
