Storage in North Harrow homes: local notes

About 54% of the homes in the streets around North Harrow went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 23% before 1919, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. North Harrow is partly covered by a conservation area, going by Historic England’s data. Conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If you’re unsure, check with the council before work starts. About 52% of households in the streets around North Harrow live in detached or semi-detached houses, according to Census 2021. In a semi or detached house, a driveway, where there is one, can make unloading easier.

Close to Headstone Manor Recreation Ground? Under-stairs cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things. For a family home near Longfield Primary School, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up. If you live in a period home close to Church of St Alban, the cupboard door under a period staircase can be kept or replaced to match the new storage.

About our under-stairs storage in North Harrow

Pull-out drawers make the most of the low, deep end of the space. Rather than reaching into the dark, you pull the drawer towards you and see what’s inside. Cupboards suit the taller end, where coats can hang and a vacuum cleaner can stand. A mix of drawers and cupboards is often the best use of the space. We make under-stairs cupboards from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and the things people most often want solved are a vacuum cleaner that has nowhere to go and a fuse board that’s hard to get to.

Around North Harrow, interwar houses or semi-detached and detached homes make up a good part of the housing. In a typical 1930s house, storage tends to hide in the bay, under the stairs and in the box room. Any meters or fuse boards that need to stay reachable are designed around.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Fitting day, step by step

Once the main sections are fixed in place, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly. The time the fitting takes depends on the shape of the space and the number of drawers and doors, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. In a 1930s house with a converted loft, the stairs to the loft room are often steeper than the main flight, so any section going up there is sized for them. Elsewhere in the house, the route is usually more generous. Each section is assembled and fixed in the room.

  1. It starts when you get in touch with a few details about the space, and whether the meters or fuse board are in there.
  2. We visit to measure the space and discuss the design with you.
  3. You receive a written quote for the storage we have discussed, for you to read through.
  4. The drawers, doors and carcasses are made at our workshop.
  5. We fit it in your home, scribed to the stairs and the walls. Any meters stay easy to reach.

Before fitting day

  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand

Ask for a quote

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you do not, that is fine, and we can work it out together. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To start, message us from the contact page.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it.

FAQs: under-stairs storage in North Harrow

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in North Harrow?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Harrow-on-the-Hill station?

Yes. We cover all of Harrow and the rest of London. To get started, you can use our contact form with a few details about the room.

Should I choose drawers or cupboards under the stairs?

Often a mix works best. Deep pull-out drawers suit the shallow end under the bottom steps, and a cupboard at the tall end handles taller things. We’ll suggest a layout when we visit.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

We need someone to let us in at the start of the day. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.

Is it possible to fit storage around a meter under the stairs?

Yes. Meters and fuse boards often sit under the stairs, and they need to stay accessible. We note them at the design visit and plan the drawers and doors around them. Moving a meter is not our work, so we design for where it is now.

What happens when you come to measure?

It is a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, then send a quote in writing.

Could you do it yourself?

The real difference is in the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot usually do that in an older room.

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths.

Before and after fitting day

People planning under-stairs storage often ask about these. They help whatever the room:

  • Find out what sits in the space now, from meters to pipes
  • Plan decorating around the fitting
  • Think about handles and how the fronts will look from the hall
  • Mention any parking rules on your street

Wiping the fronts with a soft, damp cloth is typically all they need. Dry them afterwards, and avoid abrasive pads and strong solvents. The edges of drawers and the areas around handles pick up marks first.

Damp coats and shoes put moisture into a closed space. Let them dry before they go away, and leave the door open for a while after a wet day if the cupboard feels damp.

Materials and finishes

Hand-painted finish

Hand painting on site lets the storage be finished alongside the woodwork around it. It’s easy to touch up later. Paint needs time to cure fully, so it’s best treated gently at first.

Moisture-resistant MDF

We use moisture-resistant MDF because it stays stable and gives a smooth surface for paint. It is used for the doors, fronts and side panels, where the finish is most on show.
